Set in the middle of thirty acres of emerald green pastureland rolling down to dramatic oceanfront cliffs, Hawaii Paso Finos Ranch Retreat is a nature lover's dream escape. You will have the rare opportunity to stay at a working horse ranch and farm, while enjoying the scenic surroundings of the majestic North Kohala Mountains and living amongst our herd of lovely, gentle and friendly Paso Fino horses. We do not offer horseback riding, but those interested may choose to take part in one of our equine programs, such as yoga on horseback, horse-to-human natural communication, or our special 'Hawaiian Equine-Assisted Learning' and human growth & development activities. (H.E.A.L.) In any case, everyone will have an opportunity to interact, groom, or just wander through the pastures with the horses. Your accommodations are set close to our horse barns with a first hand view of the arena and paddocks where the horses mingle with a variety of native and non-native birds. Many migratory bird species are spotted here during winter season, and of course, there is no better place to whale watch than from our private oceanfront meadow with a picnic table waiting just for you. We truly believe that the Niulii area of Kohala is just about the most peaceful, spiritual and naturally beautiful place on the Big Island- a perfect sanctuary in the middle of the Pacific in which to reflect, rejuvenate, relax and heal the mind and soul. We love to share all the best that the island has to offer in its therapeutic energy and serenity. Private in-room or outdoor massage can be arranged. Come enjoy a bit of history too. King Kamehameha I was born just nine miles away, and lived and ruled the Kingdom of Hawaii from here. The place names reflect his life and lineage. The property is situated on old sugar cane land, with historic homes and ruins nearby. Relax in the porch's hammocks while reading books provided on Kohala's special history. The ranch is also located minutes from Pololu Valley and Keokea Beach Park, with hiking and sunbathing opportunities. The retreat is well-equipped with a separate kitchen for cooking, featuring the innovative Ninja all-in-one cooktop, fryer, steamer and slow cooker. A gas BBQ is provided on the outdoor lanai dining option. Also a spacious indoor bathroom with waterfall shower, deluxe linens provided, and comfy pillow-topped queen bed with choice of pillow style. Recliner and soft love-seat couch make up the sitting areas. All rooms are appropriately decorated with artworks from local artisans. In the interest of sustainability, our ranch runs on solar power and utilizes a private catchment water tank. Our orchard fruits, pineapples and vegetables are offered to you when in season. Because we are an active, working horse ranch, occasionally other visitors do come out for sessions with our horses. We also need to do regular chores and training daily, but will always notify our guests first, as your peace and comfort is our main priority. We feel that you will truly sense the special power of this ranch land and its majestic surroundings- whether it's in the soft glow of the sunrise or the sunset clouds swirling in their kaleidoscope colors every evening, or the energy of the ever changing ocean surf blown by fresh trade winds. Maybe you will find tranquility in just watching the horses calmly grazing with the brilliance of a rainbow overhead. We want to welcome you to "our little piece of paradise on earth." MAHALO!

Kelly and Joe have a magnificent place with spectacular oceanfront views of the Pacific.
If you like big vistas, ultra-green grass, empathic horses and delightful hosts, you will love their nature retreat. The Paso Fino horses work wonders with PTSD veterans and troubled youth, and the ranch facilities are top notch.
We loved our five days discovering the Kohala Coast, and the accommodations were a perfect place from which to explore. We only wish we had planned to stay longer.
Getting away from it all
A lovely, relaxing location, with charming 2 and 4 legged hosts!
T Mobile has poor reception in the area, so we embraced the change to "unplug" from our phones and the internet and television.
We loved our time in the porch hammocks, walking down to watch the waves crash on the shores, and hanging out with the residents horses, dogs and birds. I scheduled a private session with Kelly on communicating with horses through body language, movement and intuition which was very fun and informative. The property is kept in immaculate order, the sunrise and sunset views are outstanding, the studio is well stocked with everything we needed. Kelly and Joe were wonderful hosts - happy to chat and "talk story" and also very respectful of our privacy. If you want to get away from it all, I highly recommend this gem on the northern tip of the Big Island near the charming towns of Hawi and Kapaau.
Enjoyed the Sights, Sounds and Smells
The unit was exactly as described in the VRBO listing and we enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the lovely location. Kelly and Joe were very helpful hosts and we enjoyed our talk story time with them. Being around the horses was very relaxing and calming - it was nice being away from the hustle and traffic of Kailua-Kona. Morning and evening walks through the pastures were enjoyable especially when the horses decided to come check out who the visitors were. We could have spent hours watching the waves break along the cliffs from the overlook at the bottom of the property. Not having a TV nor internet access was not an issue for us and we listened to many of the CDs available in the rental unit. The unit was nice and clean and we had no issues at all with bugs or creepy crawlers. The on-demand hot water system functioned perfectly and we enjoyed our showers. We can highly recommend this unit if peace and quiet are what you are looking for.
Just what we needed!
What a beautiful spot to get away from whatever is weighing you down! We loved how beautiful the grounds were, the ability to walk the whole property, the interaction with the horses and the spot on hospitality of Joe and Kelly! The accommodations were spotless and had everything we needed. We enjoyed that fact that there was no TV but there are puzzles and plenty of CD's if you need them. Our AT&T signals were spotty but we could find two bars on the front porch, lol! No WiFi - hard to get used to at first but it turned out to be a good thing. Our hosts offered to let us come down to the house to use theirs though if necessary. We ventured out a couple of times to Hilo and Kona. The drive to Hilo was amazing! Went as far as Hawi often to take in local color but mostly enjoyed the front porch hammock chairs with the awesome view, the picnic spot near the cliffs and the conversations we had with our hosts. The dogs, Bonnie and Oscar, are absolutely adorable. Spent some time with Joe and Kelly in the human/horse communication lessons and I thoroughly enjoyed myself (while my husband was golfing). What a fabulous program they have going on with their Paso Fino herd! Give yourself at least a week to wind down and completely relax. We spent 11 nights and we could have stayed longer and would have never been bored of the view, the horses or our hosts.
The property and surrounding acreage were peaceful and beautiful.
What a wonderful stay. Joe and Kelly have a wonderful story as a backdrop to the giving property they've developed over the years. The equine experience accompanied by the surrounding tranquil beauty made for a thoroughly relaxing and wonderful stay. We were active and traveled to Mauna Kea and into Kona over a couple days, and both were great droves of you have the commuter time. The property is also a short jog away from world class hiking, which will also take your breath away.
Joe and Kelly are great hosts to boot. Enjoy.
Would give 10 stars if we could!
We absolutely loved our stay and would give 10 stars if we could! The studio was clean, comfortable, and had everything we could possibly need. The property is exceptionally beautiful and serene. We loved waking up to breathtaking views in the morning and stargazing with the sound of waves crashing in the distance at night. The rugged beauty of the North Kohala coast combined with the lack of mega resorts in the area made this the perfect location for us to unplug and get away.
Joe and Kelly are warm, friendly and down to earth hosts. We had plenty of privacy, but also really enjoyed visiting with these two. Their love of horses and passion for helping the local community is inspiring. We highly recommend scheduling an equine learning experience during your stay. We loved being able to interact with the horses in a fun, meaningful and unconventional way.
Away from it all, but conveniently close to the quaint Kohala towns of Hawi and Kapaau with local style restaurants, art galleries and coffee shops. Bustling Waimea, home of the Parker Ranch, is just a scenic 40 minute drive out, as are the white sand resort beaches. Beautiful Pololu Valley is just one mile away at the end of the road, as is quiet Keokea beach park. This historic north end of the Big Island is a haven for nature lovers, along with the agri-tourist and eco-tourist. Horseback riding, whale watching and other activities are offered right on our property. Zipline tours, ATV adventures, Kayaking the Kohala Ditch, Rainforest and trail hikes are all available close by.
