About Peter Ross

I'm a portrait photographer and spend my time going back and forth between Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, and Cupcake Cottage in Roxbury, NY. I've been renting the house out to weekend visitors for a few years now, and love sharing my little slice of paradise with some very happy guests.

Peter Ross purchased this house in 2004

Why Peter Ross chose Roxbury

Cupcake Cottage was built as a small barn in 1838, and sits on a steep hill way up high. The house fills with light when the sun sets directly across the far valley, and it's completely magical. It feels entirely secluded and peaceful, but is still a short drive to groceries, restaurants, and area attractions. The best of all worlds.

What makes this house unique

There is a hammock under an old apple tree, a fire pit in the meadow, and the kitchen is well stocked with basic pantry items and cooking tools. There is a charcoal grill and a wood burning stove for winter heat. A vintage KLH record player and lp collection awaits, and a modern Bose speaker to output ipods and similar devices. Wifi, and an Apple TV with Netflix and HBO etc.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The cupcake cottage was perfect for our weekend getaway and communication with Pete was easy. The house was super clean and equipped with all the essentials, especially in the kitchen. Our favorite features were the wood stove and record player (and Pete's collections of vinyls). We'd book again in a heart beat. Thanks Pete!

A Gem On The Hill

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I recently enjoyed a very relaxing stay at the Cupcake Cottage, and we found it to be the perfect getaway from the city for us and our small poodle mix, Kramer.

Peter was an amazing host, providing some excellent bonuses that really make the cottage stand out amongst other houses we've rented over the years. Highlights included an amazing record collection, a spacious kitchen with plentiful accoutrements, an amazing fresh vegetable garden, and a deck with a grand view of the valley below. It was an absolute thrill to spin so many classic jazz, blues, samba, and soul records -- perfect coffee time & evening beer jams.

I also found the space great for getting work done - I felt very at-ease in the morning and made some good progress on a game project I'm currently working on.

As for the general area - it's the Catskills! So lots of hiking / biking / kayaking / skiing / farm visits are all within reasonable distance. We managed to do all of the above, except skiing, because it was September.

Would we go back? Absolutely! We're already looking forward to our next trip.

Wonderful long weekend

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely and relaxing time and the cottage exceeded expectations. Very cozy and perfect for two people. I loved the large upstairs bedroom/loft. We had several excellent fires.

Anything you could think of needing was there, comfort, electronics, food prep wise. I did not realize I wouldn't need to bring a single toiletrie item either!

Peter was a great host, available if we needed and checked in, super easy to communicate with.

We cannot wait to go back!

Peaceful Oasis

  • 5 of 5

Rejuvenate and renew body mind and soul as you immerse yourself at this haven...Warmth from the fire, a music library of many genres and a glass of wine transports you to the peace your body has been yearning. The spectacular view of the mountains and rushing water outside the kitchen window remind you to slow down and breathe. Our host, Peter, was more than accommodating..ready and willing to assist in any way possible..The kitchen is a chefs delight and any item you may have forgotten is waiting for you..Thank you Peter for a memorable and refreshing weekend. Best..Julie &Chuck

A Perfect Escape

  • 5 of 5

A very special property. You can tell when you first arrive that this is not a typical Catskills cottage. The property has fantastic views of the valley and range below from the living room, porch and bedroom. Peter has masterfully appointed a once clearly rustic structure to something between a mountain home and a hip loft. All the comforts and everything you might need to cook are available. We scored with the weather, one 70 degree day in February and an insane thunderstorm the next that turned into a snowy evening. The location is perfect if you're into exploring multiple villages, hikes, Peekamoose restaurant or just holing up for a weekend. Hope we can swing a trip back up in the summer!

Would give more stars if I could

  • 5 of 5

Stayed at Cupcake Cottage for a few snowy days and it was wonderful. It is a very tastefully outfitted cabin/cottage with incredible views and proximity to some fun outdoor activities (13 minutes to skiing, door to door!!). If you have any desire to cook during your stay, the kitchen is wonderfully equipped. Peter was also extremely responsive and helpful, answering any questions we had almost immediately. We will DEFINITELY be coming back, and can't recommend the cottage highly enough.

Just Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Cupcake cottage is magic, and Peter is a wonderful host. The property and view of the mountains are stunning, and there's a beautiful vegetable garden full of delicious goodies in season.

Peter's record collection is vast--there's something for everyone, and everything sounds amazing on the vintage KLH record player.

The house is lovely and beautifully curated--the pictures do not do it

justice! Every detail (right down to the lighting) is perfect, there's a ton of really great art, and also a wonderful claw foot tub under a breezy window for long soaks. We can't wait to go back to this perfect haven and are so grateful to Peter for opening this special, unique space up to guests like us!
