About Vanessa McCauley

We have lived here since 2000. We love our home and our neighborhood. Both Joel and I own our own businesses. We love to cook, go out, garden and drink a good beer with friends. We have two amazing children 11 and 9 and you will undoubtedly find evidence of them around the house.

Vanessa McCauley purchased this house in 2000

Why Vanessa McCauley chose Richmond

We were unmarried and in our late 20's when we bought this house. We wanted a house where we could raise our children. It has a huge yard, for the city, which we loved and 3 full baths that we knew would come in handy with kids. My parents had moved to Woodland Heights when I was a senior in high school and I immediately fell in love with the area. When I met the chap that would be my husband we were lucky enough to find the right house for us here too. I love to see how much the neighborhood has changed in the 25 years I have been here. I really could not, would not want, to imagine living anywhere else.

What makes this house unique

We love that our house is close to everything fun. We are within walking distance of the James River, an amazing farmers market (rated one of the best in the country by outdoor living), Browns Island, several restaurants, a coffee shop, Forest Hill Park and so much more. And don't forget all of Richmond's amazing festivals. I could not begin to name them all, but some to check out are:

The Richmond Folk Festival:

Broad Appetit

Watermelon Festival

Strawberry Festival

French Film Festival

The French Food Festival

2nd St. Festival

Richmond Jazz Fest

A lovely place to stay - recommend it!

  • 5 of 5

We have small children who have a hard time settling down to sleep when we're all in one room (for example, a hotel room!). This place was a God send. When our infant cried during the nighttime wake-ups, my husband and other daughter still slept soundly. That's saying something about the great layout of the bedrooms and space in the house. Also, we were close enough to the wedding venue - and related festivities - that we didn't feel like we were missing out being separated from all the family staying at the hotel. We cooked our extended family a nice dinner and there was ample space to share it with all at the house. A Richmond resident (after I had already booked!) had mentioned that they weren't too sure about this area of town, but they misjudged! This neighborhood was very safe and very lovely - and the area surrounding it seemed to be the same. Don't let anyone dissuade you from staying in this part of town! Very quick to get downtown too. The hosts have a great sense of humor and are very attentive. There was a slight administrative "hiccup" and they took care of it right away. Can't imagine better hosts or a better place to stay.

Our home for a special weekend.

  • 5 of 5

We comfortably stayed in this beautiful home for the all important VCU graduation weekend. We were extremely happy with the property both inside and outside and the listing was true to it's description. The house appears small from the street, yet is surprisingly large in the inside. There was no need to visit crowded restaurants or bars when we were able to relax in a clean, uniquely old house with most all ordinarily modern amenities. As a horticulturalist, I enjoyed the gardens front and back. The location and ease of getting downtown made it a great choice. We all were extremely happy with the memories that were made at this property in the Woodland Park area, just south of the James river. We surely would recommend that others stay at this house. - Brett L.

Clean, fully equipped, nicely decorated and comfortable house

  • 5 of 5

We were in Richmond for our daughter's graduation from law school and loved our stay at this property.

The listing description was accurate regarding the location, layout, and amenities.

The location is wonderful, on a quiet street but within walking distance of the James River with its' parks and trails and also very close to downtown.

The house was clean, well-maintained, and comfortable for our family of 5 adults.

The owner was very accommodating, providing excellent customer service.

We enjoyed renting bikes at Riverside Outfitters and experienced a delicious dinner at Acacia.

I would highly recommend this property and a trip to Richmond.

Lovely historic vacation

  • 5 of 5

We had travelled several times in the area, and I always dreamed of visiting , or better, staying , in one of those historic houses that make the area so interesting. Well, this is my dream come true : this house is lovely, beautifully decorated with ancient and interesting furniture, while being perfectly comfortable at the same time.

The house is very conveniently located at close driving distance from the center of Richmond, in a quiet residential area. The house is spatious, more than enough for the six of us. Everything was spotless on arrival. The kitchen is well equipped, the bedding very comfortable; there is a charming yard all around.

We had a little problem with the heating system , and Vanessa and Joel took care of it immediately. Moreover, they were particularly helping before we arrived, for we had some travel problems due to tragic events in Belgium at that time, and we very much appreciated it.

We had a lovely one week stay in this house , would recommend it to anyone and would go back if in the area again.
