About Cath and Ian Mills
Hi there, We are Cath and Ian Mills (Most of the writing on this site is mine - Cath's. That's us above, at a lovely restaurant a bit North of Mangoes - The Fish Pot) I usually say that we work in tourism as we have three properties for holidays; a guest house in Rothbury, in rural Northumberland in North-East England, an apartment in Mijas Pueblo, in Spain's popular Costa del Sol and my special favourite, Mangoes in Barbados - where it's summer all year round! We live and work in the guest house, running it entirely ourselves and manage the other two from England with the help of some excellent staff! We love our own holidays and know how important it is to re-charge those batteries once in a while so we do our best to ensure that all of our guests have a wonderful holiday experience. We come out to Mangoes twice per year to make sure everything's ok or to make improvements and ..... to enjoy! You want to know more about us? Well, we've both worked with people for many years. Before we started running our own businesses, I used to work in child care whilst Ian was in charge of the local Careers department. Our first business was a coffee shop, then a restaurant, and now the guest house with the additional holiday homes. We were married on April Fool's day (which tips you off as to our sense of humour!) and we are coming up to our 36th anniversary in this year of 2018.
Cath and Ian Mills purchased this Villa in 2003
Why Cath and Ian Mills chose Sunset Crest
We've been travelling to Barbados for around 35 years and have forgotten how many times we've visited. Way back in the past, I had a 'thing' about Barbados. I think it started when Cadburys chocolate people came to school with a film of 'How we make chocolate' and those little penny bars to give out, one each. I was about 7/8 and very impressionable. The film started with sugar cane cutting in Barbados .... the sky was so blue, the vegetation so lush ..... When I was around 20, there was a documentary about the island showing as the 'second film' at the cinema. There it was again, that intense blue, the emerald greenery, the vibrant colours of the flowers .... how could I resist? I was sunk!!! When a certain airline (who I suppose must remain nameless) brought the flights down to a realistic price, our whole family took advantage. At first we stayed on the South Coast, which is lovely, but when we found the Sunset Crest/Holetown area, I felt I'd come home. This genteel area has more gentle seas, the underwater national park (so the snorkeling is great) and it has great facilities - everything's on the doorstep. I always tell guests that they don't need a car here except for sightseeing purposes. The area has seen some sympathetic re-development in recent years, with pleasing results. The facilities are right up to date for the 21st century whilst all the character and charm of the Caribbean has been preserved, notably the chattel village - a cute collection of brightly painted wooden shanties selling a wide range of goods. By contrast, we have Lime Grove, a smart, semi open-plan shopping mall selling all the top designer labels. It offers several restaurants and a cinema too. We saw Mangoes in Spring of 2003 and I fell in love instantly. In my eyes it was the perfect house in the perfect place. It did need a lot of TLC, but after quite a bit of updating, it's now a home we are proud to share and we have every confidence that our guests will love it too.
What makes this Villa unique
I knew I wanted to buy a big house (big enough for all the family) in Sunset crest/Holetown area - it's such a nice, peaceful tree-lined, up-market place. It took a lot of planning and hard work to acquire Mangoes - I prepared my personal projection based on our finances eight years in advance of the year we bought and I'm so glad it all came right! We saw Mangoes in Spring of 2003 and I fell in love instantly. What made me do that? Well ..... The proximity to the beach could only be better if the situation were beach-front..... we are just across the road; a two minute walk at most! We just grab a towel, take the tiny key for the wrought iron doors, leave the breeze streaming through and cross the road for a swim in the warm Caribbean. If a storm has whipped up the waves a bit too much, we use the pool which is also just across the road. I like to swim in the late afternoon and to watch the sky changing from blue, through pink and gold to a velvety violet as evening begins. After swimming, we often have a drink at the beach bar and watch the sun setting over the sea. The other thing that smote me instantly were the gardens which were a dream. I was entranced by the gazebo, secretly tucked away in the secluded, shady, rear garden...... it's where we have breakfast every morning when we are at Mangoes. Generally, we couldn't have a better location, we are within easy walking distance of all the amenities; a wide range of shops, bars, banks, supermarket, restaurants to suit all pockets - what more could anyone want? Every little thing we have done to Mangoes has made it that little bit nicer, brighter, homier.

I rented a property in St. James Barbados through Home away from home. I have no regrets. Excellent
My husband and I, together with my two brothers and their wives, stayed at a property call Mangoes. It was awesome. It was a three bedroom, three bath villa which was very clean and spacious. The care- taker, Lucille was very friendly and kept the place very clean. She came twice a week and clean the entire villa. She changed the beds, put fresh towels in the bathrooms and fresh kitchen towel . The Villa location is awesome. Only two minutes walk from the beach and pool. The yard is very large with beautiful flowers. Every day two monkeys come to the windows to say hi to us. It was only a 5 minutes walk to the supermarket called Massey, and to the restaurants and shopping mall. The buses were also a two minutes walk and came frequently. We can't wait to go there again. Everything was just perfect. We love everything about that place. The owner was also very helpful. She kept in touch with me and answer all my questions. She was perfect in all her informations and guidance pertaining to the property and neighborhood. Thanks Cath. You're the best.

Many thanks for this top rate review. In a nutshell, it says everything I say about Mangoes myself.
Glad you enjoyed your stay, if ever you'd like to return, you know where to find us.
A wonderful vacation - our 2nd time back !
This is our second time back to this property. Our stay was hassle free and relaxed. The property is clean and well kept. It is airy, spacious with a beautiful lush garden a few minutes walk from the beach in a safe area. Since we have young kids we were very happy about the grocery store and a walk-in clinic near-by. The area has good restaurants and is minutes from the famous Limegrove shopping mall.
We will definitely be back!
Thanks again for a lovely review ..... this is becoming a habit. A very good habit!
It's good to have all the positive things I say about Mangoes reinforced by your comments on safety, location, facilities, beaches and of course, the house and grounds themselves.
Thanks again, hope to see you next year too!
We have been to Holetown in Barbados 5 times now and this has to be the absolute best location for this price range. You are right in the middle of it all yet it’s so quiet and peaceful.
The villa is big, clean and fully stocked. We loved eating in the outdoor dining area which had mesh to stop the mosquito coming in, yet still felt like outdoor dining.
To have use of the beach house pool is excellent especially for the price of renting the villa. We’ve had access to the beach house in the past and this was another thing that made us choose Mangoes above any other villa.
We plan to venture to other parts of the world for a few years but wouldn’t hesitate to rebook at Mangoes should we return to barbados.
Thanks so much for this excellent review. It endorses everything we say about Mangoes regarding location, ambience and atmosphere.
Outside of those things, your review mentions value for money as well which is very useful information for future renters to help them make their decision to choose Mangoes.
Thanks, it’s a great review, useful, informative and complimentary.
I do hope you will return to Barbados – it’s one of those places; once you have been you are smitten for life! When you’re ready, we look forward to seeing you back at Mangoes.
Take care and enjoy your other travels.
Perfect accommodations in a perfect location
Just returned from a relaxing 2 week stay at Mangoes in Sunset Crest. The accommodations were perfect and exactly as described and pictured---clean, spacious, warm and inviting, with everything you could possibly want or need. Thoroughly enjoyed breakfast and afternoon cocktails on the front porch with the geckos, finches, doves and occasional curious monkey (they don't bother you, and quickly go on their way).
Mangoes is well situated in a perfect location, particularly if you don't want to be bothered with a car. A short (< 5-minute) walk out the back gate gets you to food, shopping, a bus stop, the beach club (w/ pool), and the beach! A 5-minute walk will get you to a major, modern supermarket with everything you could possible want or need.
The beach adjacent to the club/pool is small but quiet and good for swimming, with a bit of shade too. You won't be bothered much, if at all, by vendors here. But bring your own chairs if you want a seat. (There are plenty of lounge chairs by the pool---provided you get there early---but these are for the pool area only.)
However, we spent much of our beach time a few blocks down the road, directly across from the supermarket at the beach adjacent to Surfside Restaurant and Bar, our "second home" during our stay. Great beach, surprisingly good off beach snorkeling, and excellent drinks and food in a laid back, quintessential Caribbean atmosphere. Lounge chairs and umbrellas can be rented here at a reasonable price, and there's alway someone available if you want to partake in water sports, purchase colorful clothing, or get your hair braided ;-). We became quite friendly with some of the folks working the beach. Lovely, lovely people. They felt like family by the time we left.
I could go on and on, but suffice to say that Mangoes can't be beat for the combination of accommodations and location---again, particularly if you don't want to have to drive. Highly recommended.
P.S. We had the pleasure of meeting the owners---Cath and Ian---when we arrived, as they stayed prior to us. Delightful folks, and the pride and care they take in their home really shows.
Thanks so much for this lovely review!
It was a great delight to meet you too! We rarely meet our guests because we live so far away; shame that our paths could only cross for a relatively short time.
Barbados is a wonderful place, isn’t it? And our area in St James, Holetown/Sunset Crest and the whole of this aptly named Platinum Coast is both beautiful and well served.
Thanks for all the positive comments about Mangoes - we love it so much and have personally put a lot of hard work into improving it and looking after it.
At this point, I have to thank my lovely staff for helping in this too, particularly Lucille who is the person who keeps it all going in our absence.
Thanks for confirming to future readers how well situated Mangoes is for all amenities.
I usually say beach and pool are a 2 minute walk, restaurants abound between 2 and 10 minutes and the supermarket about 5, as you say. Hopefully you found our file, with local map, useful for locating these amenities.
Our nearest beach comes and goes according to the sea which will take away the sand at times and rebuild it at others. There has been a man renting beach chairs on that beach and I’m surprised to hear that he was not there on this occasion. Fortunately, you found Surfside …. and, next door by Zaccios, (beach bar/restaurant) there are also rent-able beach chairs.
Again, it was a pleasure to meet you and to have you stay. If ever you’d like to visit again, please get in touch – we’d love to have you back.
Cheerio, Cath n Ian
Great Location, very clean and comfortable
Just coming to the end of our holiday. My husband and I and our children really enjoyed the stay. The house is very clean and has great access to the beach and eateries. The kitchen is well stocked and the rooms are large and airy, we never had to use the air conditioning. We don’t want to leave. The owner is always on hand if needed and answers all questions quickly with a happy pleasant manner. I would highly recommend this house it’s staff and the owners, just pleasant through and through.
As the island is only 21 miles long by 14 wide, the whole of Barbados could be said to be local to Mangoes - that is, it is eminently possible to explore anywhere and everywhere using Mangoes as a base.
'Is it worth exploring?' Oh, yes! Barbados is a 'big-little' island, with a tremendous variety of things to see and do!
The coastline divides naturally into three parts:-
1 - The East is mostly wild and scenic with huge Atlantic waves pounding cliffs and beaches, brilliant for sightseeing and photo-opportunities but not recommended for swimming!
2 - The West (our bit, also the chosen venue for nearly all of the top-class hotels and homes of the rich and famous) has much calmer waters and is ideal for swimming and snorkeling (the Folkestone Underwater National Park is right opposite Mangoes).
3 - The South Coast Beaches have much less calm waters than the West, but are mostly still safe for bathing. The pace of life is quicker here and nightlife generally noisier especially in 'St. Lawrence Gap'.
Other Activities: Jet skiing
