About the property

3 bed detached home, sleeps 2-7+cot. Comfortable, relaxing, great situation.

Exciting news! (Posted January 2018)

Our extension project is finished. Mangoes is now a three bedroom, three bathroom house with two of the bathrooms en suite to the two main bedrooms..

This lovely detached villa, in lush tropical gardens is available for parties up to 7 in number. Couples are particularly welcome - we find it glorious to have this space for the two of us!

It goes without saying that the whole house and grounds are always for your party only.

Mangoes could not be better located, it’s just across the road from a sandy beach and the pool.

Sunset Crest, where Mangoes is situated is a lovely residential area right on the 'Platinum Coast' of Barbados and near the two historic streets of Holetown. Most of the houses are quite large, detached properties (owned by respectable working people) with beautiful, tropical gardens which all adds to the pleasant atmosphere of the area.

The beach and the pool are situated just across the road. The pool is privately owned by Sunset Crest property owners and is served by the Beach House which provides restaurant, bar and facilities. Entry to the pool is free for local residents and renters and, as many locals are working people with lives to attend to and not much time to go swimming, this leaves it fairly under-used.

Back to Mangoes …… a new ensuite bathroom to the twin/queen bedroom making Mangoes into a three bedroom, three bathroom house with two ensuite bathrooms and the other for private use by the other bedroom.

The house is large with three areas for dining; formally in our 'al fresco' dining room, quietly in the gazebo tucked away in the rear garden (which I call the secret garden) or on the big verandah; probably the most popular and most used area of the house.

There are seven bed spaces in three generous bedrooms; the master is a twin/super-king (with the safe in the wardrobe) - now en suite, the second is the twin/queen also now en suite and the third has three single beds, or a large double and a single if preferred with a private bathroom a few steps along the corridor.

All the bedrooms have ample wardrobe space, dressing table and seat, hairdryer, full length mirror, bedside table and lamps. All are equipped with ceiling fans and air conditioning at no extra cost.

There is also a fold-away cot.

There are two recently modernised bathrooms, both with shower, washbasin and loo.

The kitchen has been recently refitted with plenty of fresh, new cupboards with white doors and granite work surfaces. It is well equipped with tropical fridge/freezer, cooking stove/hob, kettle, coffee maker, toaster, pans, crockery, cutlery etc.

Off the kitchen we have a recently renewed washroom with washing facilities for your use.

The living room is light and airy with windows/french doors on three sides. Keep the breeze flowing though even whilst out by locking the clever wrought iron gates, provided to protect the house and your property.

This room is furnished with a three/two/one cane suite in tropical style, coffee table, flat-screen multi channel TV, video and DVD player and well stocked bookshelves.

Two bright, 'Hunter' lights (with fan) hang from the ceiling and an occasional table in the corner bears a lamp, the telephone and our guest book!

There are three sets of glass 'French' doors leading from the living room; two to the verandah and one to the formal dining room.

The dining room is furnished with a large white-wood table and six upholstered chairs. Its lovely arched windows look out onto the garden on three sides.

The verandah overlooks the main garden and is well furnished with a second cane suite in blue, comprising three seater couch, two arm chairs, coffee table, fans and lighting, extra standard lamp and a pine table with six pine dining chairs. It benefits from having ceiling fans for those warm afternoons.

Decor is up to date and lighting around the property has been carefully considered to promote a soft, relaxing atmosphere when desired whilst also offering enough light to enjoy reading.

A previous guest wrote to us after his holiday, saying that on his first evening, when he sat on the verandah, overlooking the garden, he thought he had died and gone to heaven! He had been looking out at our floral arch, lit with pretty fairy-lights at night. Tropical vegetation is exotic and we have a range of interesting, useful and beautiful plants all around the house. We have bougainvillea, hibiscus, frangipani, lemon grass, aloe vera, alamander, desert rose, bird of paradise and more. The arch itself is adorned with a dainty climber bearing pretty, feathery leaves and delicate pink bells.

There are ceiling fans in the living room, kitchen and bedrooms which also offer air-conditioning. (No extra charge for this.)

There is maid service twice per week. This involves changing of bed linen, cleaning of bathrooms and mopping floors etc.

The telephone makes free calls around the island. It will not call to numbers abroad but calls from abroad can be received.

Free Wifi.

The safe - big enough for everyone's property.

About Cath and Ian Mills

Hi there,

We are Cath and Ian Mills (Most of the writing on this site is mine - Cath's. That's us above, at a lovely restaurant a bit North of Mangoes - The Fish Pot)

I usually say that we work in tourism as we have three properties for holidays; a guest house in Rothbury, in rural Northumberland in North-East England, an apartment in Mijas Pueblo, in Spain's popular Costa del Sol and my special favourite, Mangoes in Barbados - where it's summer all year round!

We live and work in the guest house, running it entirely ourselves and manage the other two from England with the help of some excellent staff!

We love our own holidays and know how important it is to re-charge those batteries once in a while so we do our best to ensure that all of our guests have a wonderful holiday experience.

We come out to Mangoes twice per year to make sure everything's ok or to make improvements and ..... to enjoy!

You want to know more about us?

Well, we've both worked with people for many years. Before we started running our own businesses, I used to work in child care whilst Ian was in charge of the local Careers department.

Our first business was a coffee shop, then a restaurant, and now the guest house with the additional holiday homes.

We were married on April Fool's day (which tips you off as to our sense of humour!) and we are coming up to our 35th anniversary in this year of 2017.

Cath and Ian Mills purchased this villa in 2003

Why Cath and Ian Mills chose Sunset Crest

We've been travelling to Barbados for around 35 years and have forgotten how many times we've visited.

Way back in the past, I had a 'thing' about Barbados. I think it started when Cadburys chocolate people came to school with a film of 'How we make chocolate' and those little penny bars to give out, one each. I was about 7/8 and very impressionable. The film started with sugar cane cutting in Barbados .... the sky was so blue, the vegetation so lush .....

When I was around 20, there was a documentary about the island showing as the 'second film' at the cinema. There it was again, that intense blue, the emerald greenery, the vibrant colours of the flowers .... how could I resist? I was sunk!!!

When a certain airline (who I suppose must remain nameless) brought the flights down to a realistic price, our whole family took advantage. At first we stayed on the South Coast, which is lovely, but when we found the Sunset Crest/Holetown area, I felt I'd come home.

This genteel area has more gentle seas, the underwater national park (so the snorkeling is great) and it has great facilities - everything's on the doorstep. I always tell guests that they don't need a car here except for sightseeing purposes.

The area has seen some sympathetic re-development in recent years, with pleasing results. The facilities are right up to date for the 21st century whilst all the character and charm of the Caribbean has been preserved, notably the chattel village - a cute collection of brightly painted wooden shanties selling a wide range of goods. By contrast, we have Lime Grove, a smart, semi open-plan shopping mall selling all the top designer labels. It offers several restaurants and a cinema too.

We saw Mangoes in Spring of 2003 and I fell in love instantly. In my eyes it was the perfect house in the perfect place. It did need a lot of TLC, but after quite a bit of updating, it's now a home we are proud to share and we have every confidence that our guests will love it too.

What makes this villa unique

I knew I wanted to buy a big house (big enough for all the family) in Sunset crest/Holetown area - it's such a nice, peaceful tree-lined, up-market place.

It took a lot of planning and hard work to acquire Mangoes - I prepared my personal projection based on our finances eight years in advance of the year we bought and I'm so glad it all came right! We saw Mangoes in Spring of 2003 and I fell in love instantly.

What made me do that? Well .....

The proximity to the beach could only be better if the situation were beach-front..... we are just across the road; a two minute walk at most! We just grab a towel, take the tiny key for the wrought iron doors, leave the breeze streaming through and cross the road for a swim in the warm Caribbean. If a storm has whipped up the waves a bit too much, we use the pool which is also just across the road.

I like to swim in the late afternoon and to watch the sky changing from blue, through pink and gold to a velvety violet as evening begins. After swimming, we often have a drink at the beach bar and watch the sun setting over the sea.

The other thing that smote me instantly were the gardens which were a dream. I was entranced by the gazebo, secretly tucked away in the secluded, shady, rear garden...... it's where we have breakfast every morning when we are at Mangoes.

Generally, we couldn't have a better location, we are within easy walking distance of all the amenities; a wide range of shops, bars, banks, supermarket, restaurants to suit all pockets - what more could anyone want?

Every little thing we have done to Mangoes has made it that little bit nicer, brighter, homier.

As the island is only 21 miles long by 14 wide, the whole of Barbados could be said to be local to Mangoes - that is, it is eminently possible to explore anywhere and everywhere using Mangoes as a base.

'Is it worth exploring?' Oh, yes! Barbados is a 'big-little' island, with a tremendous variety of things to see and do!

The coastline divides naturally into three parts:-

1 - The East is mostly wild and scenic with huge Atlantic waves pounding the beaches, brilliant for sightseeing and photo-opportunities but not recommended for swimming!

2 - The West (our bit, also the chosen venue for nearly all of the top-class hotels and homes of the rich and famous) has much calmer waters and is ideal for swimming and snorkeling (the Folkestone Underwater National Park is right opposite Mangoes).

3 - The South Coast Beaches have much less calm waters than the West, but are mostly still safe for bathing. The pace of life is quicker here and nightlife generally noisier especially in 'St. Lawrence Gap'.

Other Activities: Jet skiing
