Overview

About the property

Grover Cottage is nestled in the small village of Otter Creek which is surrounded by Acadia National Park, just four miles from Bar Harbor. Grover Cottage was built in 1929 but has been completely restored and updated with well-appointed furnishings, high-end appliances and modern conveniences. This charming house was featured in the March, 2012 issue of Country Living magazine and will comfortably accommodate up to six people. Grover Cottage is within walking distance to the Otter Creek Market, The Burning Tree Restaurant (one of the best restaurants on Mt. Desert Island), and the village playground and within 5 minutes by car to the villages of Seal Harbor and Bar Harbor and the National Park's most popular destinations including Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Bee Hive and the Park Loop Road. About 1-minute walk from our house, the Park Service has just created a new Acadia National trail head that will lead you into the park. Or about a five-minute walk you can rest on Otter Cove, a small sheltered bay off the ocean. If you prefer to leave your car in our driveway, you can always jump on the free Island Explorer shuttle bus that stops right at the end of our street and take it to Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park and other Mt. Desert destinations!

On the first floor, guests enter through a sunny, enclosed front porch with a full-sized day bed and then move into a lovely Living Room with decorative fireplace. Just off the living room is a den with sofa and TV that offers guests a comfy place to retreat and curl up in front of a movie or show. The beautiful kitchen is with well-equipped with Jenn-Air stainless appliances (built-in microwave and wall oven, dishwasher, large stove top) soapstone counters, and a peninsula with counter seating for three. Separate Dining Room offers a table for six. A new half bath has been added on the porch just off the kitchen.

The second floor has three well-appointed bedrooms, two with queen beds and one with two twin beds. These bedrooms share a spacious modern Bathroom with claw foot tub and separate walk-in shower room.

The outdoor space is beautifully landscaped. The new blue stone patio with fire pit and furniture and the full-size picnic table provide a tranquil setting for outdoor relaxation and dining.

Other Amenities include Cable TV, Wireless Internet, DVD player with WiFi video streaming, Sonos Stereo Player, Stereo with CD Player, room fans, and Washer/Dryer.

Great location

  • 4 of 5

The house at Otter Creek is in a great location-five minutes from the town of Bar Harbor, close to lots of wonderful hiking. The house was impeccably clean, with a fully stocked kitchen and interesting artwork and decoration. I miss the shower, which was amazing: large, beautiful with a stone floor that gives your feet a mini-massage. It all worked well for our trip.

I did not give it five stars because we chose the house, in part, because it has 1 1/2 bath, but the powder room is tiny and off the unheated porch so it did not feel like part of the house. Also, the tv area is tiny and not that comfortable-if we had a larger group and wanted to watch it would have been an issue. But overall a terrific place. The restaurant around the corner is also a bonus-great to walk to after a long day hiking.

This was a beautiful home in the amazing Acadia area. My family enjoyed the spacious back yard.

The owner, Larry, made us feel very much at home. The kitchen was fabulous, ready with equipment to make our lobster dinners! It was a very child friendly home! We’re hoping to go back!

Perfect House - Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5

This house was just perfect for our first trip to Acadia National Park. The house comfortably fit 2 families of 3 (4 adults, a 9-month old baby & an 18 month baby) and had everything we needed to relax after a day of hiking or exploring the island. The kitchen was well stocked, and had great appliances (both in the kitchen and the washer/dryer), Sonos was great, and even cell phone boosters! We used the TV room as a play area and the kids (as well as the adults) loved playing on the lawn outside the house. But the best part was that the location of the house just couldn't be beat. It was close to downtown Bar Harbor (about a 10 min drive) but also close to most of the hiking/attractions on this side of the island. The house was a short drive to Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Sieur de Monts Spring, and even Jordan Pond. The best part was being able to walk out of the house, cross the street, and start our day hiking on the Quarry Path - which led to Gorham Mountain Path and then over to Sand Beach (we took the shuttle home from here). The homeowner answered every question and the welcome packet had much of the information you will need. Can't say enough about how great this house was and how great of a week we all had.

Perfect house and location to tour Acadia National Park!!

  • 5 of 5

Me, my husband, and teenage son and daughter came to Mt Desert Island this past July to tour Acadia National Park and spent the week at Grover Cottage. We had never been to the area and Larry and Barbara's home was the perfect home base for our visit, a very short drive into Bar Harbor, but far enough away to leave the summer crowds and relax. The house and property itself was PERFECT!! So quintessentially "Maine" and it surpassed all of our expectations.

From the moment you walk in the through the sleeping porch, it's obvious how much love went into restoring and decorating this home. Barbara and Larry have put together such a beautiful, comfortable space and we felt right at home. And, what an eye for displaying such a varied, quirky, and fun personal collection of personal items and artwork. Some of my favorites: The cup of wishbones in one of the living room curio cabinets, the collection of "paint by numbers" scenes of the last supper in the dining room, the dining room chandelier with dangling pictures/postcards/notes, the books and paintings in the TV room/den, and the mirror display in the 1/2 bath off the back porch.

Also loved the original restored, weighted windows with specially designed "sticks" to prop the ones open that wouldn't stay open on their own, the natural wood staircase and bedroom doors, the large "rock" steps at the front and back doors, the "old style" push on/off light switches, most with dimmers so lighting could be adjusted, the radiator and clawfoot tub in the upstairs bath (enjoyed a nice soak one night after a particularly tough hiking day), the large walk-in shower with pebble floor, the amazing stone firepit out back, the very well appointed kitchen (LOVED the soapstone sink and countertops and the checkerboard floor), plenty of fans throughout to move the air around, and oh, yeah, the internet connection and Sonos music system.

THANK YOU BOTH so much for sharing your home with us!!!! I hope we have a chance to visit the area again and we would definitely stay at Grover Cottage again.

Lovely Vintage House Close to Everything

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at this property. I had actually first seen this house when it was featured in Country Living magazine several years ago and remembered it because of the MDI location. The house is full of vintage charm and beautifully decorated. Perhaps more important, it was clean and everything worked. We did a lot of cooking so we appreciated the nice kitchen appliances. The bathroom was another favorite room. Nice experience!
