A Real Gem

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at the property not really knowing what to expect, but were put right at ease by the friendly and accommodating Maryann and Dave. They led us down the winding drive, surrounded by trees, to the cabin. Already we were amazed at the seclusion and natural beauty of the spot. The fire ring was already loaded with kindling, thanks to Dave, and Maryann led us into the adorable cabin, pointing out everything we would need. We were so excited to see the spring, called Mermaid Spring, we put off unpacking, and walked the minute-long path down to the spring. We decided immediately we had to get our kayaks and check out the river. As it was our first night we only got to explore a bit of the Santa Fe River, but it was so peaceful. The next morning we took a longer trip, kayaking past Rum Island Park (a 2-3 minute walk down another path and has a large swimming area) and into a cut-off for Blue Springs. Again we were amazed by the beauty of the water. The plants under the water were so unbelievably visible they looked fake. We've been many times to Weeki Wachee Springs in our neck-of-the-woods, but the springs here were just breathtaking and so clean; you can tell the people that use the river take pride in its beauty. After our extended kayaking trip we decided to bring our camp chairs down to Mermaid Spring and read. Soon we had company, as it really is an amazing little spot, but everyone was friendly and courteous. We were even treated to some live music by a couple of young men that brought their guitar and banjo with them. That night we took a ride into downtown High Springs (less than 10 minutes away) to have dinner at The Great Outdoors, and were again treated to live music and some of the best food we've had dining out. Two nights were not nearly enough to explore all that this area has to offer, but we thoroughly enjoyed ever minute of our trip. Thank you again, Maryann and Dave for sharing your property...as my husband said repeatedly this place is a real gem!

Peaceful and beautiful

Beautiful view in a secluded clearing. Peaceful location not far from a river and the smiths were so friendly that we can't wait to go back.

Such an amazing week!

  • 5 of 5

This property was amazing. The hosts were incredibly welcoming, the cabin perfect, and the peacefulness spot on. I traveled north about 5 hours from Fort Myers with my pup to escape my incredibly crazy work life, to relax, work on my doctoral dissertation, and find some hiking spots for the pup and I. The cabin was literally next to one park, and within 10 minutes of two other state parks, giving me plenty to do. The cabin was simple, but had everything I needed. Thank you again for such an awesome week. I hated having to head home back to reality.
