About Julie Nathanson
I'm an artist and designer with a background in public art. For many years I lived in Brooklyn and made all kinds of glass sculpture and several glass tile murals in the subway. I wanted to buy and renovate a house with my art and design skills. My boyfriend Todd can build anything under the sun, including motorcycles, and we did the renovation together.
Julie Nathanson purchased this House in 2012
Why Julie Nathanson chose Vineyard Haven
Martha's Vineyard is such a special place with unrivaled natural beauty, world class art and music scene and cultural diversity. After living in NYC I didn't want to move to a stuffy New England town but I wanted to be closer to my family. People on the Vineyard are from all over the world. When the opportunity to buy a home here I jumped feet first. I loved that you could walk from the ferry since I don't always want to bring my car. One cool thing is that you can flag down the buses here, like taxi cabs, and the #1 bus goes right by our house. They also can carry bikes.
What makes this House unique
It was important to me to try to sustainable but luxurious and modern. The house needed to be completely gutted and we used recycled materials as much as we could. Some of the materials people discard are of higher quality than what's available today. It's a lot more tedious and time consuming but worth it. If you look around the house you can see some of the reclaimed materials. - Bathroom tiles are cut from discarded slate roof. - We reclaimed the floors from an old house that was being demolished. They're made in the US over 75 years ago and the planks are much longer than what's available today but they had to be pried up with a crowbar, nails removed - Reclaimed fir barn boards from a barn that was torn down in southern RI. We used it to make all the baseboards, trim around the windows, around the tub, mirrors and vanity and the ceiling of the back porch. - One of the headboards is made from a discarded pool table base. - The outdoor shower floor is made from the same pool table top. - The fences are made from left over cedar boards from a log cabin. - We used old greenheart, which was used to make marine pilings, to make the gate doors outside, the raised planting bed and some furniture. It all had to be re-cut and planed. - My boyfriend made the TV stand from fallen tree limbs and the bathroom vanity from reclaimed fir. Another design goal was to feel pampered. The appliances are all new and energy efficient. The bathroom has a large walk in shower and a deep soaking tub, two sinks and granite counters. The kitchen is filled with stainless appliances, a gas cooktop, wall oven, dishwasher, quartz countertops and cherry cabinets. The washer and dryer are on ground floor. It had to feel light and feel airy so we added a ton of windows. The backyard is fenced to feel private and we added an herb garden for easy gourmet meals. We have a gas fire pit to relax around. Let us know what we should add next year!

Where do I start? From the minute we booked to the end of our stay, Julie was a gem to work with. We arrived to an immaculately clean home that felt so welcoming. The house is warm, cozy and completely luxurious all at the same time. The location is so convenient to so many things. It's on a main road, but the way the house is set up, you don't hear any traffic. There are so many nooks and crannies to relax in, and it was a delight to see how the owners used repurposed materials to create a unique, stylish and interesting space. The backyard is fenced in, private and HUGE! My pugs were delighted! The beds are kings and comfortable. The bathrooms are super cool and spacious. There is a vast amount of towels and kitchen supplies so you don't have to bring anything extra. The kitchen was fantastic with a great space to cook in. The screened in porch is so comfy and we had some warm November days to enjoy just relaxing out there overlooking the quiet private yard. I am rambling, but really can't say enough great things about this property. We rent frequently and this is by far our favorite. We can't wait to return! Amazing, beautiful, comfortable, quiet and relaxing.... the perfect get away!
This is a very practical and confortable rental. The interior decor is very tasteful and it's obvious a lot of care went into design. The bathrooms are way better than any other rental we have tried, the master shower is huge and low maintenance. It's not emphasized in the description but the large back yard is securely fenced in which allowed us to relax when we let our german shepherd "out to play" on her own. The screened in back porch is very enjoyable for sitting outside without any weather related inconveniences such as bugs or rain. The dog loved lying out there. The owner Julie is immediately on top of any problem and in fact goes way beyond the call of duty. The location is very walkable to the center of Vineyard Haven/ ferry. The only slight downside is that at certain times the road outside gets very busy. We would definitely rent again if we return to Martha's Vineyard.
Great Labor Day stay
The entire experience was great. House layout was perfect for 4 adults and 2 young kids. Location on the island was very central. Julie was exceptionally attentive and helpful
1st time to the island
Our family of four visited MV from Texas knowing little about the island. Property is clean, updated and a very central location. Julie was phenomenal. She is quick to respond and proactive with suggestions. She provided some beach chairs that were very helpful. Great back patio to grill out and have a glass of vino. Exactly a 1 mile walk from ferry/shops. Just be aware the property is on a main artery. We rented bikes, jumped off the "Jaws" bridge, hit different beaches, did 1/2 fishing charter which all led to a memorable vacation. Thanks Julie.
Great property and location is very convenient!
Julie provides everything that one needs to have a comfortable stay. She is always available if you have questions. The house was immaculate. Kitchen is modern and well-equipped. There's a new washer and dryer. The outdoor shower, the fenced-in yard, and screened-in porch all add to the charm of the house. Nice details with the flooring and bathrooms. Pet-friendly too!
The house has been upgraded with extraordinary attention to distinctive features
The house was extremely clean and very comfortable for my family that included 4 children under 10 and 4 adults. There is a fenced in backyard where the kids could play when they weren't at one of MV's beaches and a screened in porch perfect for relaxing with a good book. All appliances are new, including the washer and dryer that was put to good use. The house is an easy 15 minute walk to downtown Vineyard Haven and many beautiful neighborhoods. It is located directly on the bus route which will stop in both directions right in front of the house. Julie was helpful from the moment we contracted for our week last January right up to our departure at the end of the week. We highly recommend staying here.
