The kitchen is user friendly with everything you need to cook up a feast. Stainless appliances, wall over, gas stovetop and quartz countertops. Our you can BBQ on the back porch. We designed an arbor in the front of the house with benches to wait for the bus. It's all custom designed to be functional and beautiful.

I'm an artist and designer with a background in public art. For many years I lived in Brooklyn and made all kinds of glass sculpture and several glass tile murals in the subway.
I wanted to buy and renovate a house with my art and design skills.
Three years ago I met my boyfriend Todd who can build anything under the sun including motorcycles. We did the renovation together.
Julie Nathanson purchased this house in 2012
Martha's Vineyard is such a special place with unrivaled natural beauty, world class art and music scene and cultural diversity. After living in NYC I didn't want to move to a stuffy New England town but I wanted to be closer to my family. People on the Vineyard are from all over the world.
When the opportunity to buy a home here I jumped feet first. I loved that you could walk from the ferry since I don't always want to bring my car. One cool thing is that you can flag down the buses here, like taxi cabs, and the #1 bus goes right by our house. They also can carry bikes.
It was important to me to try to sustainable. The house needed to be completely gutted. As much as I could I tried to use recycled materials. I wanted to see if it was possible to make something luxurious and modern from materials people saw as useless. The tiles in the bathroom are cut from a discarded slate roof. It's amazing how much people throw out when they renovate and some of the materials they get rid of are of higher quality than what's available today. If you look at the floors you'll see the planks are very long. I reclaimed the floors from an old house in Cambridge that was being demolished. They were made in the US over 75 years ago. I found a big pile of fir boards from a barn that was torn down in southern RI. We used it to make all the baseboards, trim around the windows, around the tub, mirrors and vanity and the ceiling of the back porch. One of the headboards is made from a discarded pool table base.
On the design end I wanted to be pampered. The bathroom has a large walk in shower and a deep soaking tub, two sinks and granite counters. The vanity is handmade by my talented and long suffering boyfriend.
The kitchen is filled with stainless appliances, a gas cooktop, wall oven, commercial dishwasher, quartz countertops and cherry cabinets.
One of my favorite details is the upstairs laundry closet.
Most of all it had to be filled with light and feel airy. The house originally as dark inside. Todd was shocked and concerned about the number of windows I wanted to put in. I found a house near boston that was being torn down with high end windows only a few years old. Most of the windows from that large two story house have been put into this smaller one story house. If you look at the exterior walls you'll see there isn't a lot of wall space, which in turn created some design challenges, like where to put the tv.
I'm so happy with the end result and I hope you enjoy it and the details make your stay easy and comfortable.
A great home, right in the center of the action. Easily walkable to downtown Vineyard Haven. Linens and fresh towels a plenty! Well-stocked kitchen, private yard that is great for kids, and a great screened in porch that is very comfortable for the evenings.
We were at Julie's house for 2 days in July with or 3 kids , from 8 to 12 years old . The accommodation is perfect for 5 people or 6 people . The beds are for couple , which I didn't mind it . But sometimes kids can be pick and don't want to sleep together ( which didn't happen with us ) . The house has everything that you need for cooking if you decide to have your meals there or some of it since dinning in MV can be costly if you appreciate fine food . We do like to experiment the restaurants in town every time we go on vacation , so no regrets . The location is perfect , away from the tourist crowds and not far from Edgard's town ( which is the nicest) and Oak Bluff . Julie also let us know few places that is a must do while in town . Overall we had a great stay , Julie is very accommodate and it go out of her way to make sure you are satisfied.
The location of this place was perfect for our family. Very central, easy to get anywhere on the island, and also walkable to adorable downtown Vineyard Haven. The bathroom is gorgeous, and the cottage is lovingly renovated with beautiful wood materials and thoughtful touches like perfect paint colors. The owner is wonderful and she was very responsive to our requests. It has a lovely large backyard where our kids played. A/C units in the bedrooms keep you cool at night. Had everything we needed and nothing we didn't. Loved it.
This ranch style two bedroom was the perfect home away from home. The house itself is lovely. We woke up each morning and had breakfast in the deck while the dog played in the backyard. Everything was labelled so we had no problems finding what we needed - everything from cleaning supplies, to laundry, to cooking utensils were all available. The location was perfect as well. It's a short 10 minute walk to Main Street and Beach Road in Vineyard Haven and the bus can be flagged down in front of the house if you are headed to another section of the island. It's close enough to be accessible to the action, but far enough away to provide a peaceful hideout as well. I highly recommend this property and hope to be back here again next year.
We really got lucky with this place. It is a cute single level home with a nice kitchen and a beautiful bathroom filled with unique slate walls. It has a nice back yard with a cute deck. There are 2 nice size bedrooms and we had some family come out during our stay and there were two pullout couches. We will rent again and we recommend highly, it was well worth the money!!
