Extraordinary view and privacy from the terrace guarantees rest, sunbathing and endless dinners under the stars.

I was born and grew up in Arles. I loved Arles because it is the best of what a small city can offer.
Restaurants, shops, museums, galleries, outdoor markets, friendly people. The place is charming, undiscovered and gorgeous. I live in the US since 1984, 20 years in NY and now 15 years in the Berkshires, also a beautiful part of the world. Why the US? I came as
the NY correspondent of french newspaper, freelanced for L'Express, Vogue Decoration, Le Matin, Le Journal du Dimanche et even Le Pelerin.
While crossing the country in all directions, I then worked as a fashion director at GQ and The New York TImes Magazine, later moved on to fashion marketing and for the last 15 years own and run a café in the hip town of Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Helen and I have two kids. We bought the house in Arles to spend our off-time in warmer climes and catch up with the European family back home.
I had never really considered the pleasurable aspect of having a home and open it to guests
from all over with the idea that they would actually like the same things, enjoy the same stuff and experiences of staying in a house that become theirs for the duration of the stay. By and large, I would say that 99% of the people who have stayed there are could be
friends if circumstances put us in the right corner of the world.
Jean-Francois Bizalion purchased this townhome in 2015
The house is an unadorned four-story construction, typical of the neighborhood, once a working class community. It underwent a full renovation, offering the confort of modern architecture retrofitted in a house with its original features. Spot lighting, open kitchen/living, stainless appliances, tiled bathrooms, terrace with summer kitchen, this home was smartly reinvented under the watch of a brilliant architect. Our local agent will
greet you, check you-in and make sure that your visit is pleasant and successful. Provence has great climate, great food and wine and sea frontage. It also has music, theater and Unesco protected roman monuments. Arles is a gem, still undiscovered, great in all seasons and soon the headquarters of the Luma Art Foundation designed by Frank Gerhy.
Terrace, complete privacy. This house is a haven of peace. It features lime stone walls and exposed beams. It was renovated very smartly, preserving original features while making no compromise to confort. One of the features we like is two bathrooms and two seperate WCs.
In addition to the all stainless steel open kitchen with spot lighting and all modern
equipment on the first floor, the terrace on the fourth floor is appointed with a summer kitchen and lounge. It has a grill plancha and a small refrigerator, a sink and its own set of dishes and cutlery. Both bedrooms on each of the second and third floor are backed with bathrooms and separate WC. Please note that this is a vertical house with 4 flights of stairs.
A clever mix of simple modern furniture creates a contemporary easy feeling in a old house, a rare combination.
This was a 3 story house situated close to the river and was in close walking distance to many sites. House was clean and comfortable with two bathrooms which is rare to find in many rentals. This worked out perfectly for 4 people. Beautiful property - we absolutely loved it.
The property is over four levels with steep steps. We were four ladies travelling together and kept our bags downstairs in the loungeroom, as they were heavy and awkward to carry up to the bedrooms. The apartment was very well maintained. It has a bedroom and bathroom on the first and second levels and a sofa bed and fully equipped bbq area with outdoor setting on the rooftop verandah which has lovely views over the rooftops of neighbouring houses.
We loved it's quirkiness and uniqueness. It was in a very central location in a very pretty street.
I'd recommend the property, although it's no good for anyone with mobility issues.
The owner was easy to converse with and his manager, Camille, was extremely helpful and friendly.
The Archaeological Museum was amazing. We found some great restaurants which served some of the best food we'd had in all of France.
Which we don't mind because we have a lot of stairs in our house... But these are very steep and some with no hand rail... Other than that, the location was exactly what we wanted, a place centrally located in Provence for day trips!
The roof top terrace was absolutely perfect for late afternoon cocktails and appetizers before dinner! We actually cooked most evenings after visiting the best butcher in town, cheese shop and grocer - kitchen was very, very well equipped (thanks to IKEA, I love IKEA!).
We really recommend this apartment!
lovely old house in the old part of Arles, close to all the sights of the old town. Old house but inside really modern with air con which was much needed through the night .. we really enjoyed the roof, cooked every night on the hot plate and ate outside .. played games and painted the views. Also had BBC and sky news which was great for the Olympic catch up every morning. Lots of stairs to the top floor so would need to be fit also no washing machine.. had a lovely time, plenty to do checking out Arles and the Camargue.
We really enjoyed our holiday in this characterful house in Arles. We'd like to be back there now!
This house has all you need and more for daily holiday living and the roof terrace is a wonderful space -
it even keeps you fit getting up there. Although within walking distance from anywhere in Arles, the
house is a haven, very quiet, and cool inside when the temperatures are rising.
Arles has so much to offer with so many Roman monuments and Van Gogh interests to explore, river walks,
great restaurants, huge markets, many shops and a friendly welcoming atmosphere.
Camille ,our contact person, was very helpful and so responsive in answering any queries -thank you.
We would definitely recommend a stay here.
My wife and I spent six nights at this house during May 2016. The owner lives in the USA but has a very competent local agent who takes care of all the arrival/departure logistics, as well as other issues that might pop up during a stay. The house is several hundred years old and has a lot of character. It is spacious, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a deck on the roof level. The kitchen is large and very well equipped. The hardware within the home all works well. I would not recommend this house for anyone with mobility issues. it is on four levels with steep staircases. Otherwise, one just needs to navigate the stairs slowly and carefully. Another positive aspect of this house is the location, a few steps from the Rhone River, where my wife and I took many walks along the promenade. It is also in a quiet location and we slept well on the firm, comfortable king-size bed on the third level.
My largest single criticism of this house is that there is no comfortable seating on the ground floor. The owner should really sport for a nice couch and a couple of comfortable chairs. The seating on the roof deck is a little better, but we preferred not to go up there in the evening, so put up with the ground floor. My only other criticism (which is an order of magnitude less important in my view) is that the shower and bath were part of a recent remodel, but the owner opted for the traditional French "hold your own shower-head" configuration. There are so many things I love about France, but shower technology is not one of them.
All things considered, I would recommend this property on the basis of its character, location, spaciousness and good local agent. If you are very advanced in years, have mobility issues or have very young children who might not be good candidates for the steep stairs, I recommend you look elsewhere.
So! There are indeed lots of choices of places to rent in the area.
Why DO YOU want to stay in this house?
Simple...It is completely renovated with a stunning terrace with views on the old city. It is confortable, it has a whole stainless steel kitchen, two luxurious bathrooms with two separate toilets on both second and third floors, a lounge area that opens on the terrace.
Other advantage : your host lives in Massachusetts. You have a question... it is a simple phone call and a chat with suggestions of what to do and where to go.
And he knows, because he was born and raised in Arles and keep an acute ear to what's new in town.
He also knows what world travelers expect, having lived in the USA for 3 decades, traveled in France, Italy, Ireland, England, Spain, Turkey, Morroco, Algeria, Mexico, Canada, Australia and all over the US.
Back to the house. It is in the coolest and most charming neighborhood, steps away from the Rhone with a magnificent river banks, and close to the most importants museums of Provence.
La Roquette is a historical small neighborhood in Arles dating back to the
12th century. It is the most preserved and homogeneous part of town, since no new buildings have gone up since the 17th century, only simply nice and discreet renovations that are beautifying the neighborhood ahead of all other areas.
It is the hip neighborhood, occupied by artists, writers, young professionals, resurrecting old buildings and small retail venues. The center neighborhood plaza Place Paul Doumer, is the host of concerts,
plays and farmers market. There is a real sense of dynamism and fusion
of styles in the streets of La Roquette. This was recently illustrated in
the New York Times in a video and article devoted to both Arles and
the neighboring city of Avignon.
A two km stunning promenade along the banks of the Rhone from the museum of Roman Archeology to the train station offers majestic views on this powerful river, once a major axis of cargo and people transportation. A paradise for joggers and hikers and curious travelers.
Many guests would like to know where to park their car. Although we looked into buying a parking space, so far we have none. Parking
a few minutes away, along the Rhone river and under the larger bridge
leading to Nimes and La Camargue, boulevard Jean Jaures. However, for peace of mind the
paying parking on Boulevard des Lices (11 mn from the house) is the best
option. Open 24/7. Plan accordingly.
Train from Airport takes under 40 mn.
Arles train station offers a free shuttle
that let you out (6th stop) around the corner from the house. Shuttle stop Grenier. Please contact us for more info on transportation, restaurants, sights and day trips.
