The "Sweet Spot" on the Bay - this charming 2 BR 1 Bath Cottage with water views is located in a private waterfront community, Long Beach in St. Leonard, MD, just half a block to the beach (which has a nice big shade tree). This cozy little cottage is super comfy and fully furnished with linens and towels. Kitchen is fully stocked with dishes and cooking gear including a crab pot so you can enjoy the Bay's traditional crab feast. Refresh in the outdoor shower after a day on the beach. Al-fresco dining on the back patio. The cottage comes with two kayaks for guests to explore the Bay by water.
There are three sandy beaches in this lovely community for the enjoyment of property owners and renters; the largest is on the north side of the Flag Harbor marina (bring your boat!) and has a volleyball net, horse shoe pit, fire ring and picnic tables. The south beach is closest to the cottage, just at the end of the block - you can enjoy the sunset's afterglow on the bay and build a small fire on the beach while waiting for the stars to come out. A moonrise on the bay will take your breath away.
You will find the lands of the Bay's Western Shore to be picturesque; tobacco barns in southern Maryland are unique to our region and have a long history in our rural landscape. Lots to do if you are not in the mood to relax on the beach. Inviting antique shops, boutiques, little art galleries and farm stands with local produce (get live crabs at the Chesapeake Bounty). Two state parks are to the South of the community - hike to Flag Ponds Nature Park, 500 acres of nature and interesting eco-systems, the trail head is just a couple of blocks from the cottage. A 10 minute drive takes you to Calvert Cliffs State Park with 15 miles of hiking trails, amazing cliffs and beaches - a fossil-hunter's delight. Further South you can visit the Cove Point Light House, Anne Marie Sculpture and Art Gardens, and Solomons Island (rent a boat to go fishing, hang at the Tiki Bar, enjoy a waterfront restaurant). Jefferson Patterson Park is just across Rt. 4 and has hosted tall ships, reenactments of battles from the War of 1812 and the annual Southern Maryland Celtic Festival and Highland gathering - their museum and live archaeological dig is open most days. Enjoy the white sands beach at Vera's on the Pax river or crack open some crabs in the open air restaurant on Broome's Island. Try a wine tour/tasting at the three local vineyards. Just up the road to the North you can visit Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary, or go to the American Chestnut Land Trust for a guided canoe trip. All of this within 20 minutes of the cottage!
South of Solomons Island, you cross the Patuxent River on the Thomas Johnson Bridge and enter historic St. Mary's County with the site of Maryland's birthplace, St. Clement's Island State Park, Sotterley Plantation, 4 lighthouse/museums, Summerseat Farm (17th century that now raises Buffalo), or historic St. Mary's City. The Loveville Amish Farm Auction is not to be missed, and the drive through Amish/Mennonite farm lands is scenic and peaceful.
If you venture further North of the cottage to the twin Bay towns of Chesapeake Beach and North Beach you can indulge in a little gambling at the Rod 'n Reel's casino. You will also find equestrian centers, and golf opportunities and vineyards.

My enthusiasm for this cottage and the area around it probably shows in the description which only begins to touch what a very special place it is. From the moment I saw this adorable cottage I knew it was perfect for my active family. We love the outdoors and have found that there is always another cove or hiking trail to explore. So many memorable gatherings with family and friends to eat crabs, enjoy the beach or hike in one of the local parks. We have made s'mores on the beach over an open fire at night and watched fireworks all across the bay from our community beach on the 4th of July. We are always on the hunt for sharks teeth and other fossils. There are lots of interesting festivals and concerts in local places like Solomons Island, JefPat Park, and over the Patuxent (Pax) River in St. Mary's county. We have enjoyed barn sales and antique auctions and love to visit the scenic Amish lands to procure the world's most beautiful fresh organic produce and flowers (favorite outing: The Loveville Produce Auction on Mon.Wed.Th). No one in our family is into golf or equestrian activities, but they are nearby as well. And the history buff will find so much, from fossils to battle reinactments to historic sites.

This home makes efficient use of a small space most comfortably. If you get socked in by the weather, you can relax on a nice couch that trundles into a large queen-sized couch to cuddle up with others and watch a movie on the large TV or read a book in the peace and quiet of our community. There are lots of board games too. In nice weather you can grill up a meal and dine al fresco on the back patio. The kitchen is stocked with gadgetry, dishes, pots & pans, knives & spatulas, serving platters, bowls, etc. And you will find a crab pot to make your own crab feast - you can buy lively crabs fresh-caught from the Bay at the Chesapeake Bounty farm stand just a couple of miles up the road. The beds are super-comfy, get the best sleep ever! One full bathroom with all towels provided, and there is another outdoor shower on the side of the house. This is a home with a heart.
Location! The cottage is perfectly situated to enjoy the serenity of our peaceful, quiet neighborhood in a private waterfront community. Plenty of parking. Plenty of things to do in the surrounding community. Nature's beauty is all around.
Loved this little house! My family had a great time. House is very nice and completely stocked.loved that it had a private beach so I didn't have to worry about my kids. We even met a neighbor who was sure nice and gave my husband and son some fishing tips. We would definitely come back!!!!!
We had a fabulous vacation in this area of the Chesapeake Bay! We have 2 boys ages 2 and 6 so this size of house was perfect for our stay. What we loved the most was having the beach so close. You are less than a minute away from a small private beach and a short drive to one you can walk on for over a mile. Both are part of this waterfront community. All the people we met were so kind. We absolutely loved the location. It was a short drive to many day trip activities.
The house itself had some pros and cons for us.
- The owners have put thought into making everything comfortable. The well water tasted fine, but it was so nice to have drinking water provided.
- The kitchen is well stocked. It is tiny but for making simple meals it works fine.
- There are plenty of places to put your stuff. Lots of hooks, drawers, and closet spaces.
- Having the kayaks available was great!
- The house was in need of a deep cleaning. While it was left clean in regards to basic cleaning, there were areas where the cleanliness was lacking. The kitchen utensils, pots, and pans felt rather sticky. The home would definitely feel better with some more cleaning.
- This is a pet friendly rental, which is great if you are pet owners. We aren't - and the dog smell was a little too much for us.
- We had a couple issues where we needed the owners' help. Compared to other places we've stayed, the owner response time was long and once required a lot of phone calls and text messages to get a response. The issues wouldn't have been a big deal if resolved quickly, but it was rather annoying having to wait so long for contact. (2 days response to e-mail question - 5 hours for issue of internet being turned off).
Overall though we had a great vacation - our boys were ready to move there! Very family friendly trip!
My wife & I and our dog Sam spent just a couple of nights here at this cottage. It's the last house on a dead end street, which means there's zero traffic, and very, very quiet. One block from public beach access, and about 2 blocks to public parking (don't forget your pass!) and a small more open beach area where all the locals congregate each evening. We found the neighbors to be very friendly (Ted across the street is a full time resident, and a great source of local info) and almost everyone in the neighborhood has a dog, so we felt right at home. If you're traveling as a couple, young or old, I believe you'll find this to be a PERFECT "sweet spot". Very nice memory foam mattress on the main bed, and a futon in the other bedroom for kids, very nice sectional couch for watching the big screen, something we don't do very much but if it's a rainy day maybe? Plenty of good local restaurants not too far away in Prince Frederick, and all the grocery or retail you need. We walked to the end of Long Beach Rd. and spent some time on the natural beach area hunting for shells and fossils, found some nice pieces of abalone. Spent Friday afternoon playing a par three near Owings MD, about 30 minutes north, nice quiet rural farm country, and other than some guys on the practice range, didn't see another soul. It's a VERY laid back course, reminded me of the ones I play at home, cheap and not snobby, $14 total for both of us to play nine holes. We will be back for the summer season at some point to see how that is, probably a lot more folks out than for our weekend. Thanks to Patti & Steve, we very much enjoyed our stay, and we will be back. We want to build another fire on the beach!
My wife and I stayed at Sweet Spot as an anniversary get away. The home is just as descibed. A Sweet Spot. It was easy to find. It is one minute from the beach. It is near many local sights and activities (we visied Southern Marlyland wineries!). The home is a real vacation home for the owners, so there is a nice lived in (and loved) feeling. This means that it is not specially decorated or appointed as some VRBO homes are. We were comfortable with the owners books, games and dishes - just as a vacation home should be! Everything worked - we were able to watch our local sports team on cable which was easy to figure out; stove worked well as we cooked one dinner and two breakfasts; and imporantly the coffee maker helped us get going each morning. Most importantly, I must note the wonderful customer service from Patti, the owner. First, the VRBO site indicated that our stay would require a longer stay that were able to undertake. I contacted Patti and she immediately indicated we could have a shorter stay. Then near our reserved dates we had a family emergency and could not travel. Patti was completely understanding and offered to move our reservation to any future time that worked. This was a wondeful personal gesture and fabulous customer service. Patti was very responsive by email and when we had a question upon arrival, she was immeidately available by phone. The thoughtfulness and responsiveness was greatly apprecited. We would highly recommed Sweet Spot. It is just an hour outside Washington DC - and a great place to get away from the hectic pace of the city.
My wife and I spent five nights here for our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary and we absolutely loved it. The cottage was perfect and had everything that we needed. We used the kayaks to get out on the bay and had a great time overall.
We really enjoyed our stay at this small but ample home. There are many good things about the location.....it is on a side street in the village of Long Beach but just a minute walk to the beach. The locals are friendly and helpful and we felt so completely safe during our stay. We watched deer in the back yard every day....and butterflies were abundant. The kitchen is small but well stocked and easy to work in. We used the back porch often and enjoyed the quietness of the house's location.
We perused the many cookbooks and enjoyed the jigsaw puzzles....but with wonderful weather it was a time spent mostly outdoors. The Kayaks are a true bonus and I made good use of them. I love to walk and always found someone to chat with on my daily strolls.
The outdoor shower was my husbands favorite part of the house. The laundry is a bonus. Cell service was hit or miss but that was not an issue for us...just a few steps outside and service was back.
Long Beach is a quiet, no frills beach village where folks set up beach chairs in the morning and leave them there all day. It is a great spot to search for sharks teeth and fossils and one can easily Kayak to Flag Ponds and beyond. Using this cottage as home base there are many adventures within a 30/60 minute drive. We spent time in Historic Leonardtown and had a special dinner at Cafe Des Artistes which has become a favorite dining spot for us. Since we enjoy cooking and eating in we are overjoyed with the grocery choices in the area..Nicks of Calvert offers wonderful meat and deli selections along with the lowest prices for wine, beer etc.
Also there is a Giant, a Food Lion, and others right in Prince Frederick.
We love the area and the rental from this VRBO owner was a pleasure.
