Enjoy one of Michigan's finest all-sports lakes in a secluded setting, with undeveloped lots on either side (effectively 300' of private lake frontage). Our rustic/retro cottage doesn't have many modern fancy upgrades (which helps us keep our rates low), so what you're getting is a great lakefront experience. Included at no extra charge is the use of our 14' aluminum fishing boat w/6HP outboard Johnson motor & plenty of gas, 14' Sunfish sailboat, (1) 12' kayak, (1) 10' kayak, & (3) 8' plastic lake kayaks. (Note: this is just 1 of about 5 "Bear Lake"s in the state of Michigan; ours is the one in Manistee County, Bear Lake Village, south of Traverse City and north of Manistee, on U.S. 31.)

About Kevin Mallison
We love our vacation cottage at Bear Lake, but rent it out when we're not using it to help pay the high property taxes.
Kevin Mallison purchased this Cottage in 1960
Why Kevin Mallison chose Bear Lake
One of the best features of this secluded lakefront property is the lengthy shallow, sandy shoreline. This makes swimming and splashing around in the lake so much more fun than some lakes with weedy/mucky bottoms, or those that are too deep near shore to wade out and have fun with floaty toys and inflatables. Ideal for families with younger children, but fun for adults too. Also, Bear Lake water temps are so much warmer than Lake Michigan! Warm enough in June to get into the water, and sometimes as warm as bathtub water by Labor Day! Our spring/fall guests come because of our low rates those times of year, and for a quiet scenic getaway. October is popular when the leaves start to turn, because the area is beautiful when the fall colors arrive!

Peace & Color
Nice rustic cottage.Plenty of room & good working heaters. No beach to speak of , some difficulty getting in/out of lake,no stairs or handrails..just large rocks....not great for seniors.Prior renters left sand & dog hair on floor & blankets in one bedroom,& shredded food stuff in kitchen cupboard..we did not clean up their mess!...the usual problems with multiple renters.Kevin was helpful & available, very knowledgeable regarding Bear Lake area.
Thanks for your constructive comments, and for booking your return trip next year despite those problems. We will be installing a set of steps with railings off our dock to help seniors getting in and out of the lake. We also will be enforcing our "no pets" rule, and stepping up our cleaning standards.
Pleasant quaint and quiet. Away from the riff raffle of some of the other resorts. Rock beach along the shore. Was a great escape.
Perfect Family Vacation!
We loved our stay at The Juniper Cottage! Our girls ages 8 & 10 loved the ability to swim in the shallow water and catch minnows. They learned how to kayak! We took the boat out and fished in the cove. We enjoyed catching perch, bluegill, sunfish and a big dog fish. We traveled to Frankfort and Manistee to shop. We went to the Platte Fish Hatchery, Lake Bluff Bird Sanctuary, Acadia Outlook, Point Bestie Lighthouse and Rockin' R Ranch. We highly recommend going to Rockin' R Ranch to ride horses! It was very affordable, nice people and horses and the ride was incredible with views of Bear Lake! We liked eating at Grill 44 in town, TJ's Pub in Manistee and 13th Street Restaurant and Market in Cadillac. I heard The Glenwood is good in Onekama, but we ran out of time to try it so maybe next time! It's a no frills, rustic cabin, but it's a gem! Reminded me of some of my trips as a kid! We took advantage of the fireplace inside and had some fires outside in the firepit too. The flat pan in the kitchen makes great pancakes! Saw lots of deer on our walk near the cabin. Kevin was amazing always making sure we were having a great time! The lake is so close to the cabin only about 10-15 steps to the dock. I loved listening to the loons the night before we left. This was a trip we'll always remember!
Rustic. Older cottage

Rustic & Relaxed
Kevin was extremely helpful and insightful and provided a wonderful stay. The atmosphere was relaxing and laid back. I would highly recommend this spot.
Wonderful place to relax and relax some more
We had a wonderful few weeks of cottage life with a marvelous view of lake and sky and many cozy fires to cuddle up to. This is a perfect get away to enjoy nature and space and we did and would come back and do it again! Thank you Kevin!

Additional pricing information
Owner needs to personally speak with all renters before reservation is confirmed. Since this is our vacation home, call us to discuss rental arrangements. We're offering a no-frills, low-cost vacation option which will appeal to those who want an outdoorsy getaway. (It is not a modern facility, but instead has rustic charm including knotty pine and cedar tongue & groove paneling, and a natural wood-burning fireplace.) The cottage is furnished and includes kitchen dishes, pots, pans, etc. To keep costs low, however, our posted rental rates do not include linens, towels or maid service (which many of our guests provide themselves). There is no laundry facility on-site, but we can provide a clean starter set of basic towels and linens for an additional $45 fee if you don't want to bring your own. You have the option to clean the cottage before you leave, or pay a $45 cleaning fee for us to hire a cleaning service. During our prime season (mid-June to mid-September), we rent only by the week, Saturday to Saturday. Before and after our prime season, we don't have those restrictions, but then a 3-night minimum is required. Our cottage is closed from Thanksgiving until mid-April because it is not insulated and would be difficult to heat during extremely cold weather. Other details can be discussed when you call us. We do check email, but call for faster response: 304-290-9043 (C).
