Perfect for a family!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is perfect for a family that wants to spread out but still be close to Adventures on the Gorge. Having a sink in each bedroom was a definite plus. We loved playing games at the large kitchen table and hanging out on the deck after a full day on the river! We will definitely be back!

Just OK

  • 3 of 5

The cabin was fine and reasonably clean although we did have an ant problem. The hot tub was located inside a shed on the back deck so we didn't use it since we had a beautiful weekend. The cabin could use a few hooks to hang things on in the bathroom and bedrooms. The dishes, glassware and utensils were adequate and it had a very nice grill. I was disappointed to see that three weeks after I booked and paid, the price had been lowered about $30 per night. If the rates are seasonal, then it would have been nice to know that and I would have waited to book.

We did enjoy the New River and especially Babcock State Park. The cabin was a nice base from which to explore the area.

2 Peaceful Nights

  • 5 of 5

We've been talking about visiting West Virginia for a long time and we finally had a chance to do it. Paul's cabin was perfectly suited for our needs. It was peaceful, clean and well-appointed. The jacuzzi was a nice bonus. We had everything we needed to cook our meals and feel at home. The beds were comfortable and we enjoyed the central air. We would recommend this cabin to anybody who is looking to explore this beautiful area.

While in the area, we visited the New River Gorge Bridge, which was impressive, but the best thing we did was take a ride to Thurmond, a historic railroad depot and genuine "ghost town". Thurmond itself was very interesting, but we especially enjoyed the winding road along the New River to get to the little town. Lot's of natural surprises along the way.

Cozy little cabin!

  • 4 of 5

First off, I can't say enough about what a pleasure it was working with the property owner (Paul) and April. They were both super nice and accomodating - Paul even let us have an early check-in and late check-out since the cabin wasn't booked before or after our stay.

Everything was clean and in good repair. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook dinner for three nights, and the local grocery store wasn't far. There were a few dogs on the property one night, but they were very friendly (we thought one was going to come home with us) and they weren't a nuisance. There were plenty of towels, and lots of cable TV channels, and the fireplace was cozy and warm and easy to use. The cabin heats up really well, so you won't ever have to worry about being cold. A lot of the time, we were able to get by with just the gas fireplace. The hot tub was a wonderful way to relax, and was open on one side (screened though) so you could enjoy the wooded view while you soaked. This was a perfect size cabin for four people - but I'm not sure that I would want to try for more than that.

One thing to note is that the cabin has no wi-fi, and I was unable to get a data signal on my AT&T plan most of the time. I knew there wasn't any wi-fi going into it, and I was okay with this, since I wasn't there to have my nose buried in my phone. I did want to call that out in my review, though, since it's kind of rare not to have wi-fi anymore and one in our party ended up needing a connection for college coursework. I did wish that there was more comfortable seating in the living room area - there was a pull-out sofa that had room for three people, though not with much room, and a glider-rocker... I think a sectional would be great, or replacing the glider with a loveseat so that couples can sit together.

That's gilding the lily, though. All in all, we had a great time and I thought it was a good price for the experience.

Thanksgiving in Hicco

  • 4 of 5

Arrived at the cabin with Paul's very detailed directions w/no problems. Nice and private. Short driveway had no issues. Greeted by 2 neighboring dogs, a friendly German Shepherd and a small white terrier mix (fearful); they appeared to be put up after our arrival. Charming and cozy. Hot tub in it's own room located off back porch. Nice porch/swing out front. Fireplace gave me some problems when I tried to get it going on Thanksgiving, but Paul gave instructions via phone and even offered to come over on turkey day to resolve the issue. Luckily I was able to get it going w/his instructions. Bedrooms have no closets to hang clothes; suggest portable clothes rack. Dressers have linen inside; suggest luggage rack. Shelves or racks in bathroom would be nice to put guests personal belongings on (ample room). A very short drive to town, approx. 10 minutes w/ample unique dining experiences and chain rest. Highly recommend the Sandwich Society and the neighboring old town village type stores. New River Gorge Bridge is approx. 6 miles away and the scenic drive is a must do. Other state parks are close by and offer great hikes and scenery for this time of year. Overall a good experience and a GREAT area to explore. Hicco we will return. Paul, Thank you for your hospitality.
