The Throneburg family has lived and farmed in this area for over 150 years. Ron and son Troy have a varied operation raising both conventional and organic row crops. Ron's brother and sister-in-law Monte and Joyce live just west of Two Roads on an 80 acre organic farm. Ron's mother lives 1 mile east of Two Roads on the property where he grew up and serves as the home base for his farming operation today.
Joyce purchased this bungalow in 2013
With three ancestral homesteads within two miles and because Ron and Troy were expanding their organic farming operation, it made sense to purchase this property that has grain storage and quick access to their farm operation's home base... less than a mile away. The house sits on a slight elevation and offers a secluded, quiet setting.
This remote setting is generally quiet however it is a working farm. The home sits on several of acres of yard and farm 'out buildings' but is surrounded by farm land. Depending on the time of year, tractors could be planting or cultivating crops, combines could be harvesting, semi-trucks could be hauling grain. For people unfamiliar with agriculture, it is a great opportunity to see the action.
Joyce - so glad we found your property for a family reunion July 14th -18th, 2016 in Shelbyville. The pictures on-line of the property is exactly as we found it and we appreciated the cleanliness, well stocked kitchen and bathrooms. We were amazed at the yellow butterflies that flew up like popcorn as we drove up and down the gravel drive to the house. Your map directions are spot on and very useful to finding the house. Local attractions such as the steak house in Findlay, winery in Assumption, the downtown Shelbyville steakhouse and Monicals Pizza were sites we enjoyed by my immediate family and as a reunion group. The Walmart and County Market in Shelbyville are great to pick up things forgotten or food for the refrigerator.
One thing that will be helpful to future renters is instructions for TV use and how to find the channels that are appropriate for this home - what are the TV channels to get good reception. You have been quickly responsive with any questions I've emailed over the time since first renting the property - thanks for that.
We really enjoyed our stay at this farm outside Assumption, IL. It's a very peaceful setting - beautiful farmhouse surrounded by picturesque countryside. The house clearly has been well cared for and has also received several tasteful updates. The kitchen for example is stocked with most any appliance/utensil you could want! There's a large front porch perfect for lounging and relaxing, and plenty of space inside and out. The kids and I got up early one morning to pick wildflowers for a mother's day bouquet. I highly recommend this place!
This place was just perfect for our needs. The house was immaculate and beautiful. The land was perfect for our group of kids age 0-5 to enjoy. They loved exploring and we loved that there were no main roads nearby to worry about cars.
The whole experience was great and now we have the itch to move to the country ourselves!
We were in town to visit family & rented this absolutely lovely retreat house. The house is beautifully decorated & spacious. I was amazed that every window in the house has scenic sweeping views of the country. With no neighbors close by, the property allows a great sense of peaceful solitude, yet is close enough to some great area attractions if you're wanting to get out & about. While there we visited Willow Ridge & Arpeggio Wineries, both within 20 minutes of the abode. An hour's drive over to Effingham, IL you'll find a great dining experience at The Firefly Grill. We'll definitely be back! I highly recommend this for a great getaway and would give it 6 stars if I could!
We stayed at Two Roads Abode to visit with family staying with us, and those living in the area. The farmhouse was great, having the old feel and is remodeled beautifully. It made me think of the great times years ago on my grandparents' farm. The kitchen was well stocked. We did not make use of the attractions and restaurants in the area this trip, but plan to do so our next trip. Much of our time was spent playing games at the large kitchen table and visiting. All of the beds were comfortable. It was great to have three generations together under one roof. We thoroughly enjoyed the quiet countryside, the homey house, and the area. The owners have considered every aspect to make their guests comfortable. We highly recommend it!
My family was relocated due to an employment transfer and we needed a home for a month and Two Roads Abode, was exactly what we needed. The home had so much more to offer than we expected. It sits about a quarter of a mile off the road in the middle of the farm. Our little girl loved seeing the tractors and combines out, and we, the adults, did too! The front porch is perfect for relaxing on the swing and feeling the wind or seeing the stars at night. The house has been redone inside and you feel like you just stepped on the set of a HDTV show, the decorating and all, is amazing! It's just 15 minutes or less from a beautiful lake. The owner's are so nice and accommodating! They even brought us fresh corn and I did not know corn could be as good as dessert, but it was! Thank you so much!
Two Roads Abode is 1 hr east of Springfield, IL home of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and other Lincoln sites (home, law office and tomb) as well as Frank Lloyd Wright's Dana Thomas House.
8 golf courses are within 30 to 40 minutes of Two Roads... some as close as 12 miles. Oak Terrace about 5 miles south of Pana features an 18 hole course, full service SPA and dining options.
45 minutes northeast is the Arthur/Arcola communities with charming Amish settlements throughout the countryside. Visit their specialty shops displaying craftsmanship from woodworking to culinary arts.
Lake Shelbyville, 20 minutes south provides boating, beaches, hiking and cycling opportunities. The General Dacey Trail, accessed from Shelbyville's Forest Park is a wonderful hike through old growth oaks where you'll often see deer and wild turkeys. Several of the campgrounds around Lake Shelbyville have boat ramps. Both Findlay and Lithia Marinas rent various sized boats.
Willow Ridge Winery is only 6 minutes away. Louie and Tina Donnel built this Tuscany style winery on farmland that was homesteaded by Donnel ancestors. Check out their website... they often have music on weekends, the setting is lovely and the wine is exceptional.
Appegio Winery is 2.5 miles south of Assumption on Rt. 51. Mike and Karen Swiney remodeled a turn of the century barn into a beautiful 2-level winery.
