This beautiful property is situated in ‘The Vallespir’, a valley of outstanding natural beauty, thirty miles from the Mediterranean sea and at the start of the Pyrenean mountain range. Placed high up in the valley facing south it has stunning panoramic views of the opposite side, of which the high point is the Spanish border (a 30 min drive). It is a ten minute walk into the picturesque village of Montferrer, where there is a bar, restaurant and tennis court. The property consists of three houses built on three large terraces on the edge of four acres of its own woodland. Extremely private but not isolated, there is an old Catalan farmhouse on the middle terrace, The Mas, with a private pool and a second house on the top terrace, Villa Olive, with its own private heated pool. The owners live in the third property on the bottom terrace and are on hand should help or advice be required, but every effort will be taken to ensure your privacy and make this a very special holiday.

Stunning, Magical Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had such a fantastic two weeks' holiday, the villa is so pretty and comfortable, with stunning views across the valley and all the amenities you could need. It's quiet, tucked away, but with Ian and Linda (excellent hosts) conveniently on hand to offer advice or just to wave a hello from next door. The walk up the mountain from the back of the property to the chateau was challenging but truly awesome, the views from the top are just outstanding and the butterflies and birds are amazing.

We loved Prats de Mollo and went several times for lunch (shopping) or just walk a round (shopping) and visit the church. Collioure was bustling and lively (a lot more shopping!) - bit busy with cars and parking so go early! Don't park over the white line or you will be physically pushed out the way! We also went over the border to Figueres a couple of times, to the Hypermarket and to the Dali museum - love him or hate him, the museum is a great experience. For drivers getting onto the motorway is a relief from the intense narrow road driving of the foothills.

But for me it was the days lazing by the pool, dining under the amazing stars and enjoying a game of table tennis (just think Ab Fab!!) and badminton made it equally fun. We had a few consecutive days of cloud and drizzle, and it was a bit cooler up in the mountain, but that was a much welcome relief on the much hotter days - and it can get very hot outside the villa as you're so high up.

Drivers keep a cool head on the roads and let the locals overtake every time and it'll be fine - it helps if you have a good car and don't mind a fair amount of driving and twisty turny roads if you want to get out and about.

It's not remote by any means, but it is sufficiently secluded to sit on top of the clouds and have a peaceful and relaxing villa holiday away from the hurly burly. Highly recommend. Looking forward to returning.

Villa d'Olive in September

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Ian & Linda for being the perfect hosts.

Villa d'Olive setting is really quite beautiful, totally private and so quiet and relaxing. The 10 minute walk down to the village in the morning to collect our fresh bread and croissant for the day, fantastic way to start the day.

The house, is the nicest one we've staying in to date, with everything you'd ever need. The book selection was a great bonus and we loved the endless selection of movies to hand for the evenings in with kids. We all loved the heated pool, our girls couldn't wait to get in every day....

Thank you again, we would love to come back at some point, hope to see you again soon.

All the best

Steve, Rachel, Elizabeth and Katy.

At one with nature!

  • 5 of 5

I totally concur with Gill Wilson review !

Our 4 weeks at this Villa was exceptional. Everything we could have asked for in terms of comfort. The kitchen is wonderfully equipped and as an avid cook , I lacked for nothing! Cooking the locally purchased freshest fish, meat and vegetables was a joy, and this complimented by the wonderful wines of the region made each day special.

Linda was the perfect Hostess, who even produced a lovely Birthday gift and card on my birthday.

I particularly enjoyed the scenery and wild- life. The butterflies are just beautiful and the birds soaring high on the thermals in blue, blue skies wonderful to watch. At night you could hear the deer 'barking' and the wild boar in the distance. A nature lovers paradise !

The walking potential is amazing, with strolls for the less fit and more serious hiking for the more energetic. The circular walk to the Castle took us a little over 3 hours, with some incredible scenery and views on the way.

Linda...thank you for making our hard earned 4 week stay with you a holiday to remember .

Perfect peace!

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from 4 stunning weeks at Villa Olive. The location is stunning - utterly peaceful. The heated pool is a real bonus, you can really take the time to float and drink in the views without getting cold.

Linda couldn't have been more helpful. She even walked our dog on a number of occasions thereby providing a complete service!

If you are looking for an away from it all holiday, then I have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending Villa Olive to you!

perfect villa with fabulous views

  • 5 of 5

Villa d'Olive is very well equipped, spacious and comfortable, and we had the perfect relaxing week there with our teenagers. We all enjoyed the pool and the extensive library of films and books. Also the walks straight out the door.

The local village is a short walk away to get freshly baked croissants and bread. The Gorge du Fou and Collioure were great trips out.

What we really loved coming from a city was the peace and quiet, the proper dark (and amazing stars) at night , and most of all the amazing views of the Spanish Pyrenees.

We'd love to come back, maybe bringing our bikes next time as we are keen cyclists.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay and do hope you return with your bikes in the future as the area is perfect for cycling, walking and star gazing! Also, in Spring and Autumn it's a wonderful area for bird and butterfly enthusiasts.

Stunning property with alll the trimmings!

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for some R+R, but also things to do when we felt like it. This was just brilliant - the property has spectacular views and everything you could want in the house. The pool is large and well cared for, and the garden merges into the natural woodland of the hillside, with walks that can start from your doorstep. We're into wildlife and the garden was teeming with butterflies!

Linda and Ian were perfect hosts and nothing was too much trouble. They live just a stone's throw away. We'll be back!!

Picturesque Montferrer village, which is only a short walk, is now appearing in many tourist guides because of its old Romanesqe church and its spectacular views of the valley and coast. Although very small, it has a bar which sells fresh bread, croissants & a few provisions, a small well run restaurant, swimming pool, crazy golf and children's play area. Locally available are guided walks, tours of local vineyards, pony trekking, 4x4 Off-roading, trout fishing and the professional 18 hole golf course at Falgos. The owners highly recommend a stout pair of shoes suitable for walking as the local signed walks offer spectacular and stunning views impossible to see any other way!

The closest shops and supermarket are in Arles-sur-Tech, a 15 minute drive.

The ancient Romans were the first people to use the valley for rest and recuperation and were responsible for the Spa towns and churches. For centuries many great musicians and artists have been attracted to the Pyrenee Orientales, the sunniest region of France. In recent times, most of the great modern artists, Picasso, Matisse, Chagall and Dufy, to name but a few, have lived in the area and found it a great source of inspiration, from the beautiful village of Collioure on the coast with its ancient castle built by the Kings of Majorca, to the spectacular mountains. Also, whilst in exile from fascist Spain, Picasso lived for some time in Ceret, a small town at the start of the valley, which now boasts a famous modern art museum. The region is rich in Cathar history and castles and the majority of these are situated amidst the vineyards.

On both sides of the border there are many coastal resorts, from picturesque fishing villages to large towns. Over the border in Spanish Catalonia, which is a thirty minute drive, there are many places of interest. In about 600BC the area was colonised by the Greeks and Phoenicians and they planted many of the vines and olive groves in the region. Of particular interest on the coast are the extensively excavated ruins of the Graeco/Roman city at Empuries. Close to the border is the town of Figueres where Salvador Dali lived most of his life and his large home has now been converted to a Dali Museum. Many guide books and maps are available at the house.

During the summer months there are numerous events and concerts of all types. Of particular interest are the classical orchestral concerts in the castle on the coast at Collioure and just over the border in Spain at Castello Perallada, and also, many concerts and events in Perpignan. In French and Spanish Catalonia the activities and places to visit are too numerous to mention, but there is a large collection of guide books, maps, programmes of activities & concerts available at the house, as well as a specially commissioned guide of tours and places of interest in the region.

The valley, although close to Spain and the Mediterranean sea, does not suffer the problems of mass tourism, and is a beautiful unspoilt part of the South of France, in fact, the farthest south one can go - a true undiscovered treasure - the lost valley!
