Otten Cottage

  • 3 of 5

Very nice cottage.- rustic. Some issues though. Was told by an employee when we booked that it had two bathrooms. There is only one. Website shows shower and tub. No tub. Unfortunately when we arrived there were no towels or wash cloths in cabin. Since we arrived after 10 PM we had to go to Walmart and buy these. We were reimbursed later in the week, but it was still quite an inconvenience. Unfortunately there were mouse droppings in all of the drawers throughout the cottage-including the kitchen drawers where pots, pan, and silverware were. There was also a dead mouse in a trap underneath the sink cabinet that was stinking up the entire kitchen. Was told by management later in week that cottage had been cleaned in the four days between last rental and our stay. Obviously not a very good job. Bathroom floor was dirty and floor molding in bathroom looked like it had never been cleaned. Also appeared that none of the floors in cabin had ever been mopped. Several of the outlets in cottage did not work. One of the bedrooms had no outlets. There was also a lot of gritty particles one of the beds in upper bedroom that an employee said might have come from the old roof? Also had some miscommunication about getting us towels and washcloths and getting cottage properly cleaned during our stay. Does have four bedrooms and a nice enclosed back porch where one can sleep. Right on the beautiful Long Lake. Fire pit very nice. No air but that is typical of homes that far north. Did provide plenty of fans. It is my understanding that this property is a relatively new addition to the properties for rent. I feel with some tender loving care this would be a great place for people who are looking for "rustic". Obviously the mouse infestation needs addressed immediately and the one bathroom is a problem for a large party. Was told it would accommodate 8-9 people. Part of our rental fee-$150.00-was for cleaning services. I certainly have an issue with that based on the condition of the cottage when we arrived. I am still giving this cottage three stars because I liked the cabin itself in spite of the above. I also do not think the above problems are indicative of any problems at other properties offered by this company. Management actually did not seem to know a lot about this cottage. I certainly would recommend this cottage if above issues are addressed and it is properly advertised.

Long Lake cottage falls short

  • 2 of 5

It is a beautiful setting but the cottage needs a lot of work. Chandelier in main room had an electrical short- safety hazard. Up North Property Management came out to replace the switch but lights continued to flicker on and off for duration of stay. Roof leaked, ancient TV did not work, charcoal grill was filled with water and fell apart when we tried to use it. There was a bee's nest under the porch area. The toilet overflowed. The cottage was dirty. Dirty silverware and coffee cups put away in cabinets. The lakefront is rocky, no sand. Bring water shoes if you plan to go swimming. Would not recommend this rental to families with young children.

Owner's Response: This cottage is an "Up North" experience, just the the headline says....It was built in the 1930's and if you like vintage and rustic, a big porch, a deck, 4 bedrooms and plenty of space, privacy, and an awesome view of the lake, this a great place. The cottage is a historic Sears and Roebuck Home, and has always been a cottage and get away for the family who has owned it for many years, and have had their families grow up there. (check out the great pictures of the their kids fishing, swimming and boating hanging on the wall). During heavy rains, the roof on the porch leaks. The switch on the light was fixed and the TV just needed to be plugged in. It does not have cable and internet, but that is stated in the profile. Long Lake has a 95% of rocky shoreline, although it gets sandy about 2 to 3 feet from the shoreline. It's a beautiful clean, clear lake. We recommend that you bring water shoes to any and every lake you might stay at in Northern Michigan, they all have rocks. Dishes may not have been cleaned and we'll look into that. We hope that each guest could be respectful of the next guest and clean the dishes before they are put away, but we will try and inspect every dish from now on. This cottage is not for everyone, if you looking for better accommodations, I'm sure you'll find them, and pay a lot more. But if you'd like to enjoy a great vacation in Northern Michigan this is the place.
