This stately residence on Chesconessex Creek on Virginia's Eastern Shore dates to 1835. Known as Clifton the property was patented in 1668 to Colonel John Wise and was a plantation of over 750 acres surveyed. It is tradition that Col Wise had built the first Clifton, naming it after his English home (A75B, pg 948 in Whitelaws). A graveyard exists today located NE of the house and contains numerous tombstones of the Wise family descendants. The current owners, who never have lived here full time, decided to offer the house as an upscale, vacation rental for the first time.
