About Randal Fischer
Both sides of our family are native Coloradans: one set of grandparents, arriving Spring Creek Mesa (30 miles north of Guest House) in 1882 to set up ranch and home; the other set, arriving Front Range in 1904, also to ranch, farm and live. We love Colorado and this SW corner in particular.
Randal Fischer purchased this Farmhouse in 1996
Why Randal Fischer chose Ridgway
Both of us have lived and worked around the world - one of us in 80+ countries in the international oil business. We have skied and hiked mountain ranges in numerous countries. We settled in this beautiful southwest area of Colorado because there is no better place for fresh air, clean living, hunting, fishing, skiing, hiking - and just being in some of the world's most beautiful (and entirely uncrowded) mountains.

Perfect mountain getaway!
My family and I had an amazing time staying at this house in Ridgway! The house is spectacular - everything it claims to be and more. The hosts were not only gracious and helpful, they went above and beyond to make sure ALL our needs were met. The property is pristine, the views second to none, the decor perfectly charming. It was so peaceful and rejuvenating. We loved exploring the surrounding areas each day, then coming "home" to relax in the evening. We all shed a tear when it was time to check out! It's the perfect home base for anyone visiting this area.
Debbie and I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful family's visit and stay in our R-Bar-D Ranch Guesthouse. With two young and active teenagers, these guests were "on the move" every hour of every day during their visit. At the end of each day, we greatly enjoyed learning of their various hikes and drives around our beautiful corner of the world. Even on their one rainy day, when I popped over to their Guesthouse, I found a happy family, "lying low" for the day, catching up from their prior day's long hike to Blue Lakes (south side of Mt. Sneffles), reading, relaxing and watching the deer outside. As often happens here at R-Bar-D Ranch, once again "Our Clients Arrive As Guests and Depart as Friends." We look forward to again receiving this lovely family next year.
The setting is perfect for anyone who just wants to get away from the frenetic pace life presents. The ride from Ridgway to the property has views of the valley and the mountains that are breathtaking. The property itself is so quiet and picturesque that it just guarantees relaxation. The owners were available at all times, if needed. The house itself had everything we needed--the kitchen and dining room has views from every window, and is equipped for cooking if you are so inclined. We love the area, having vacationed in Ouray for many years, and this property is a good location for all the many day trips to Silverton, Telluride, Durango, and Ouray. There is so much to see and do, and this property is a perfect base of operations.
Beautiful location for a vacation!
We spent a wonderful week here in Ridgway at this beautiful ranch home. The location was spectacular, from seeing deer every morning to the star-filled night sky every evening. Randal was a most gracious host and made us feel so very welcome throughout our entire stay. Accommodations met our high expectations for cleanliness and comfort. We shared with Randal that we will return. Looking forward to our next visit!
Randal and Debbie were the most gracious and welcoming hosts we've ever had! The place and setting were beautiful and peaceful, with a great view of the Colorado mountains and mule deer in the yard every morning. Great experience!!
Exactly what we needed to rest, relax and refresh!
Outstanding choice to have such a lovely home in a pristine area of western Colorado. Randal was the perfect host in all ways. The home was very well-stocked, extremely nice bedding and mattress, artwork and antiques embellished every area of the home. We found that two of five days at the cabin, just relaxing to enjoy the beauty and quiet serenity of the space and the outdoor wilderness. We loved the location of the home being only a few miles from Ridgway, about an hour from Telluride and 35 minutes to Montrose. With Ouray down the road a few minutes and Black Canyon nearby, we soaked in all the mountain air possible!!! We hope to return to enjoy this home and special host in the future! Thank you for sharing your piece of paradise on earth with us. We enjoyed every moment!!!
Beautiful home, great hosts, gorgeous setting!
We stayed for three weeks in the Guest House of the R-Bar-D Ranch. We wished we didn't have to leave! The setting is absolutely stunning, with the Sneffels Range arrayed in front of you as you look south. The house is extremely comfortable and well-appointed. Nice for hanging out or relaxing after a day of outdoor activity. We cooked most nights and found the big open kitchen and dining room perfect for doing both. Randal and Debbie are amazing hosts. They are warm, attentive and helpful with lots of great advice about things to do in the area. They listen carefully to what you like to do and provide truly customized guidance! Randal pointed us to a breathtaking hike to Wilson Meadow (with views of Lizard Head) and introduced us to the beautiful and convenient Log Hill trails system (just a half-mile down the road). The views south from the edge of the escarpment (along the trail) are incredible. Ridgway is a ten minute drive away and a great, inviting little town — some good restaurants (the Thai place, the taco place, and the Airstream trail sandwich shop are stand outs). The Friday farmers’ market is excellent and friendly. The fun town of Ouray isn't far, and you can also get there by mountain bike along a beautiful dirt road! Ridgeway is also not far from Telluride but much more calm and laid back. There are countless things to do in the area, and we can't imagine a better home base. Can’t wait to come back.
Sally and Geoff were marvelous Guests. Along with Sally's gracious mother as our third guest, once again we have been blessed with truly wonderful visitors: "Arrive as our Guests; depart as our Friends" continues as the de facto motto of the R-Bar-D Ranch Guesthouse.
Sally & Geoff's present review points to something that we, as hosts, always seek to provide: We deliberately stay away from placing the proverbial binder of local-area restaurant menus and 'things-to-see-and-do-in-the-area' brochures and leaflets. Rather, as this generous Review notes, we endeavor to learn some key interests of each and every Guest - doing so quietly, unobtrusively and respectfully - and from there, to suggest personalized recommendations to our respected Guests for what, we judge, would be of real interest to them. In short, we always seek to be good listeners and to offer up good, relevant information.
Most of the time, as intimated in this Review, we "get it right," and we always listen for our Guests' feedback regarding the activities they have experienced. This particular visit - by these wonderful Guests - gives a well-balanced set of views because of both the length of their stay (3 full weeks) and the breadth of their activities (ranging from multiple mini-trips across both Ouray and San Miguel Counties to many hikes and bike rides to dining out at a variety of restaurants to just staying in at the guesthouse for a bit of R & R and personal work, using our high-speed DSL network).
As always, our chief aims with respect to our Guests are: to provide real value-for-money; to be gracious and attentive, but never intrusive, hosts; and to afford a truly pleasant and memorable experience in one of the most beautiful mountain corners of the earth.
Randal & Debbie
The Guest House at R-Bar-D Ranch sits in a beautiful meadow at 8,000 ft. elevation, half-way between Telluride and Montrose, Colorado. Access to the property from airports at either Telluride or Montrose is entirely via paved road. From the Guest House (2,200 sq. ft.), there's a 180-degree view of the South San Juan Mountains. A walk through our pasture, for about 100 yards from the Guest House (to slightly higher elevation) reveals the full 270-degrees view of mountains, including the Cimarron Range to east and Grand Mesa to north. North America's top-rated ski resort, Telluride, lies 30 miles SW of the property - a beautiful drive along one of Colorado's Scenic Byways.
