Beautiful home on historic, tree-lined street; walk to town, harbor, docks

Bedrooms 3
Space 2,400 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms; Craftsman-style cottage; exposed wood beams, fireplace

Harbor Hill Cottage is a beautiful, year-round home in the still-active fishing village of Southwest Harbor, on the “quiet side” of MDI. Our house was built in the 1930s and has been lovingly maintained and restored. Its distinctive Craftsman-style architecture (elegant, sloping roof; cedar shingles; exposed wood beams; stone hearth) sets it apart from the houses surrounding it. Colorful gardens bloom around the house from late spring through early autumn. A deck, linking our kitchen and backyard, affords shifting views: In June, lupines grow thick and wild in the fields surrounding our property. In cooler months, glimpses of harbor appear beyond the slope of those fields. In the true dark of the MDI night sky, you might see the Milky Way – or a meteor shower – without ever leaving the Cottage.

Near neighbors on our lovely street include a church founded in 1792 and the oldest burial ground on MDI (open to the public and historically interesting). Walk a quarter mile from the house to downtown Southwest Harbor, where you’ll find excellent restaurants and cafés, both casual and formal; a food market selling fresh, local goods; a wine and cheese shop; galleries and gift shops featuring local artists and artisans; an excellent public library (which will loan to visitors); a full service bicycle shop; a hardware store; a pharmacy; and a post office. Pass through downtown and walk a little farther to find a pond that teems with frogs in summer, and with local skaters in winter (whole families around here know how to play ice hockey, and they’ll let you join, if you’re able). Set out on foot from the house in another direction to reach the scenic Causeway -- an old, stone footbridge from which you can watch dramatic shifts in tide, or see fog curl in from the sea; or in yet another direction, to watch fisherman and lobstermen haul their catches onto an active dock, and to eat at the adjacent lobster pound. Also within short walks from the house are a full-service gym, offering affordable one-day and weekly passes; a health care clinic; and the free Island Explorer Bus.

From our home, you can explore much of MDI without a car. Many bikers will find roads on this side of MDI too narrow and bumpy for comfort, but it’s possible to load bikes (your own, or bikes you’ve rented from the shop in town) onto the Island Explorer Bus. With or without a bike, you can use the Bus to reach many points of interest on MDI – in Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park -- including: the renowned Acadia Carriage Trails (for walking, biking, or a ride in a horse-drawn carriage); various hiking trailheads; Jordan Pond House (known for its popovers and tea, with exquisite park views); Sand Beach (splendid views, icy ocean surf); Echo Lake (for a swim in a family-friendly setting, with changing rooms, toilets, lifeguards); the park’s Loop Road (exquisite views, right from the comfortably upholstered seat of the free bus!). That said, some places on MDI are more easily reached by car than by bus; MDI is thoroughly laced with hiking trails, and the bus doesn’t reach them all.

On the first floor of our house, you’ll find:

• LIVING ROOM with cathedral ceiling, exposed wood beams, a fully-functioning stone fireplace, and an assortment of books we’ve loved over the years (including plenty for children and adolescents, and several on Acadia and Southwest Harbor; if you like, you can read up on the local church and burial ground, and on families whose names you’ll still encounter, all over MDI . . .).

• SITTING ROOM, also with exposed wood beams and with a newly installed 43” cable TV and Xbox system (for gaming and movies).

• DINING ROOM that seats six.

• KITCHEN with all the appliances and supplies you’ll need to cook at home.

• MASTER BEDROOM with queen-size bed and ample closet

• BATHROOM with combined shower and tub

And, up a short flight of steps:

• BEDROOM with two twin beds and walk-in closet.

• BEDROOM with double bed and closet;

• BATHROOM with shower.

Up another, short flight of steps:

• ATTIC ROOM, which we have yet to put to any particular use, though its window affords the best view of the fields behind the house (and, in cooler months, the harbor). A venturesome child might take some books up here to read . . ..

Outside, through the kitchen door:

• DECK with brand-new grill and ample outdoor seating (table and chairs, benches).

Down a short flight of steps from the dining room:

• BASEMENT with washer, dryer, and clothesline.

We love this home and its setting, and we hope you will, too! Please contact us if you’d like to inquire about rental.

This house is a treasure

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful location; immaculate historic cottage w everything needed for a relaxed, restorative week. Jenny, the owner, is a great host--there are maps, guidebooks, restaurant suggestions, and even a lobster pot! We had a great week, even though the weather was a bit uncooperative. We recommend most highly, and plan to return next year.

Absolutely charming - in a great location!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week here with our two year old. The home was perfect! The location was ideal for us. The close proximity to the "downtown" of Southwest Harbor was great. There was a small playground we were able to incorporate into our everyday walks. The deck was spacious and we spent quite a lot of time relaxing on it. The backyard is picturesque - with wildflowers growing right behind. We saw many a deer come to the yard - which delighted the toddler! We had a great stay, and would return for sure!

The owners were also a pleasure to work with.

lovely house, very well-located, and supplied with everything you need

  • 5 of 5

We knew we wanted to stay in SW Harbor and were familiar with the town. We felt lucky to find this perfect home, located within easy walking distance to town. Although it is close to everything, it is very quiet. One of our favorite places to sit was the back deck, both for breakfast and before dinner. The house is very clean and tidy, sparingly and nicely decorated, and the beds are comfortable. The kitchen has everything you need to cook as lavishly as you want, but we chose to keep it simple and walk to the lobster pound and other nearby eateries. We had a little trouble getting the DVD player to work, but our hosts were available and helpful - easy fix. We would definitely return. We were a group of 4 - my husband and me, our daughter, and my husband's aunt - plenty of room for all.

Stylish cottage on the prettiest street in Southwest Harbor

  • 5 of 5

We loved this stylish cottage on the prettiest street in Southwest Harbor. The house was immaculate and very comfortable-- we particularly enjoyed that one living room caught the morning sun and was an after-breakfast gathering place, and the other living room was perfect for cozy evenings around the fireplace. Sunny afternoons were meant for coffee and pie on the deck!

The location was ideal. Walking in one direction took you quickly to town; walking in the other direction brought you to the causeway and beautiful coastal views. And by car, the entire island was easily accessible with many great hikes just a short drive away.

Our group definitely hopes to return to this wonderful house in such a lovely neighborhood in the BEST town on MDI! Jenny was a delight to communicate with, from start to finish. She even sent specific recommendations for our group when she learned about our preferences. My family enjoyed a fantastic vacation on the island, and having this house as our home-base really made it perfect.

Our Acadia Trip

  • 5 of 5

My family and I were looking so forward to our trip to Acadia National Park. We spent a few days hiking and exploring the area. What made our trip even more enjoyable and more special was our stay in Southwest Harbor (property #715253). It was just as I imagined a quaint Maine cottage to be. The house was clean and spacious. We made breakfast every morning, packed our lunches for our hikes, then came home hours later to rest comfortably in front of a beautiful fire. The property is unique in that it sits right next to a very old cemetery, which at first I was skeptical, but then loved the history of it. The house is easy walk to the town of Southwest Harbor where there is a convenient grocery store and good restaurants. There are hiking trails within minutes of the property, but also Bar Harbor is only 15-20 minute drive where the trails in Acadia are abundant. Some trails we went to (Jordan Pond and Cadillac Mtn) are on Park Loop Road and are a little further (25-30 mins) but so worth it. Both were a highlight of the trip. The owner was wonderful to work with, very responsive and accommodating. The owner was very detailed about how to enter the house when we arrived and left a binder on the kitchen table that details everything about the property, local attractions not to miss, where to get groceries, and favorite local restaurants. I would recommend this home to anyone and if we go back sometime (and I hope we do) I would rent the home again without question.
