Hello, we are Don and Joyce, a retired couple who decided to come to live in France 9 years ago, having sold our hotel business in Scotland. We lived in the north east of Scotland, Don being born near Aberdeen, and myself on the mainland of Orkney. Don was an electrician before he became involved in the licensed trade, and I spent most of my life in the hotel trade since I was 26.We both have children and grandchildren, who enjoy coming to visit in the summer. We really love living in this part of France. During the summer we spend most of our time outside, which means we can dispense with watching tv, and then start viewing again in time for Strictly! We do all of the upkeep ourselves, which means one or other of us is to be found wielding a paint brush or hoe. I have to say Don looks after the vegetable patch - I just go and help myself and our guests are welcome to do the same. We enjoy meeting our guests and helping them to make the most of their stay with us. We hope to meet you this year.
Joyce & Don Andrew purchased this chateau / country house in 2005
We fell in love with this house as soon as we saw it. It was built around the 1890's by a wine producer. The name of 'Les Cygnes Noir' is a translation of The Black Swans that live in the small river which runs through our property. A special feature of our house is its twin towers. We wanted to buy a house that we could live in while we renovated it and this house fitted the bill. We moved in in March 2005, and started to work right away. As with all homes it's an ongoing thing, and we are always doing something new. The house is a mixture of old and new, with original beams in the bedrooms and in the guest lounge/dining room, but all mod cons are available for our guests. The area we live in is especially charming, with lots of vines, sunflowers and cereal crops growing all around us. There are many little market towns, and we are close to Cognac, St Jean d'Angely and Saintes all with many features for sightseers to visit. During the summer nearly every small town and village has a Sunday Brocante
(car boot sale) at least once. Some brocantes feature animals, all feature a host of objects that we can all live without, but they are great fun! All in all, we are glad to have ended up in this part of the Charente Maritime
Thank you for sharing your home here in France with us. We have had a lovely week and enjoyed your garden vegetables and generous company. All the best.
Just back from a relaxing week at this beautiful French house. Set in an idyllic rural location, surrounded by sunflower fields, this is an exceptionally peaceful accommodation. The house itself is beautiful with exposed beams and great character and was spotlessly clean. Having changed to a self-catering venue recently everything you need is available. The owners Don and Joyce were fantastic and were always on hand to answer any questions, for a friendly chat or to serve the obligatory pineau or gin and tonic! However, they were never intrusive and we were left to our own devices for the majority if our stay. We didn't venture far as there was plenty to keep us and the children (boys aged 7 to 11) entertained - pool, table tennis, pool table - just a day trip to Cognac which was a little disappointing. It would have been nice to have a boulangerie and a restaurant or two within walking distance, but all in all we had a fantastic holiday in a beautiful location.
Just returned from a great holiday at this beautiful house. Don and Joyce were fantastic hosts, always on hand with helpful advice, interesting chats and the obligatory pineau and gin and tonics, but never intrusive. Now a self catering set up rather than a B&B, there is everything you could possibly need. The house, pool and summer house were spotlessly clean and well maintained and the surrounding area is extremely quiet and peaceful. Plenty to keep the kids (in our case 4 boys 7 - 11) occupied for a week. Would be nice to have restaurants and bakery etc within walking distance but Don was very accommodating and always asked if we needed anything when he was going in to town. Just a shame we had to come home!
Well what can we say that hasnt been said already. Quite simply the best best B & B experience we have ever had. Don and Joyce were absolutley tremendous hosts offering great ideas for exploring the region, great eating opportunities and extremely generous in terms of the breakfast and sundowners. The room was amazing and we simply could not believe what we got for our money. The region itself is interesting (having never been before) and we were in easy reach of beach cities etc. The summer house was I think unique in that it offered refuge out of the main house but had all mod cons for cooking and chilling out etc. The pool was also amazing as it does get pretty hot in the charente. All in all a first class experience and Don and Joyces hotelier background came through in spades. Best wishes to them. Jeremy and Cahy
A hidden gem. Website desciption & photos depict exactly what we found in a supurb rural setting. Following Don's very clear and precise directions we found Le Grand Moulin some 20 minutes off junction 34 of the A10 Autoroute. Within minutes of arriving we felt as though we had known Joyce and Don for years and very much at home. Beautiful accomodation that is bright and airy and spotlessly clean. Wonderful facilities particularly for the kids with endless things to do if you can prise them out of the swimming pool ! (WiFi for the teenagers) Breakfast of home grown melon, croissants and pastries laid out for you is a cracking way to start your day. Plenty of nearby places of interest with Saintes and Cognac only 20 minutes away. Good size supermarket just 10 minutes away. There is a restaurant is this town as well but the weather was so good the BBQ was in our eyes the only place to cook. A great place for a family holiday allowing mum and dad to truly chill out on the patio or sunloungers or join in with the table tennis, table football, pool table etc, etc. Joyce and Don are fantastic hosts providing advice and information if required with no request to much trouble. On an evening Don's famous sundowners are the perfect way to end the day. In summary a wonderful holiday, thank you Don and Joyce from all the family - a week was too short it will be longer next time."
Set amongst Sun Flowers and Grape Vines in quiet rural France.
An ideal place for a relaxing unwind from the daily hurly burly .
Very well presented, immaculate accomodation. Convivial hosts, welcoming and willing to go the extra mile.
Good local restaurants, plenty to explore.
Really good base, for touring or cycling, the local landscape is relatively flat but still interesting.
First class all round.
From the time we left the Airport in La Rochelle, Don and Joyces direcions led us through beautiful Frence countryside, with tree lined avenues, to Le Grand Moulin in a stunning rural setting. On the days that we travelled out to explore with our two children, aged 9 and 11, we always looked forward to the warmest of welcomes form our hosts as we returned in the evenings. Don's unique gin & tonics are sensational. This is a perfect location to explore many interesting places or just to relax and unwind. It really was the best of both worlds and I would highly recommend it. We stayed for two weeks and thoroughly enjoyed every minute, particularly our two children, who cannot wait to go back.
Aujac is situated near the charming town of Matha and 20mins from Saintes, St. Jean D'Angely and Cognac, home of the famous French brandy. The Charente Maritime is full of historic sites and there are many good golf courses. Most villages & towns have weekly markets. In Saintes you can enjoy a river cruise or hire a little pedal boat. There are also lovely shops and restaurants. Just 10/15 minutes drive from Le Grand Moulin there are many restaurants offering very good value meals. It's possible to get a 3 or 4 course meal complete with wine from as little as 14/15 euros St Jean d'Angely is nearby & has a pool with flumes and also lanes for the keen swimmer. With golf widely available it's an ideal location for parties wishing to combine the beach golf sightseeing shopping and some gourmet eating with the pleasure of staying at Les Cygnes Noir.
Other Activities:Swimming Pool, Pool table, Table Tennis, TV, DVD, croquet, board games, cycles. French boules, small play area for children.
