Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday cottage in San Martín del Rey Aurelio - Casa Ordiales

3 bedroom cottage (sleep 6), tranquil, mountain view, south-facing garden, wifi

Casa Ordiales is located in the peaceful rural hamlet of La Madalena with stunning views towards the mountains of the Redes Natural Park. The garden is South facing ideal for sunbathing, eating 'al fresco' and generally relaxing.

This property is a comfortable detached cottage is well placed for exploring the mountains of the Redes Natural Park, surrounding traditional villages, the Costa Verde and Oviedo. Day trips can be made to the Picos de Europa. The road up to the property is steep but with a good tarmac surface. There is parking behind the house.

The cottage Casa Ordiales, is a delightful rural property perfectly positioned for exploring Asturias. The ground floor has a spacious kitchen/dining area, a modern wood-burning stove and large shuttered windows that look directly into the garden. There is a lovely orange tree right opposite the front door.

The town amenities of El Entrego include, bars, restaurants, shops, cinemas, theatre, leisure centre, and it is well served with trains and buses. The spectacular rugged coastline of Asturias's Costa Verde reminiscent of Cornwall or the West coast of Scotland has sandy beaches, spectacular cliffs, secluded coves, small fishing villages and excellent seafood restaurants. Villaviciosa's Rodilles beach a popular surfing venue, is 45mins drive from the house.

This beautiful and timeless area has more recently started to attract a more discerning holiday maker looking for a Spanish alternative to the busy and expensive Southern Costas, the Spanish themselves have been keeping it a well guarded secret! Many people visiting the area are choosing to buy houses here as the prices are very reasonable, the area very quiet and unspoiled with local government encouraging ecologically sound tourist developments.

Three couples staying at Casa Ordiales in the past year have subsequently bought properties in Asturias.

About Ms Geraldine Westrupp

I'm a photographic guide and I am based in Iceland. We bought this house for our own holidays and go there as much as possible to relax in the beautiful nature of Asturias.

Ms Geraldine Westrupp purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Ms Geraldine Westrupp chose León

This is a genuine home with a proper garden which is both private and pretty. There is a lovely orange tree right by the front door. All the windows are large and South facing, waking up to a stunning view accross forested hills and distant peaks is the best for us. When it is cooler we like nothing better than to curl up with a good book in front of the wood burning stove or to work on our images of Asturias.

What makes this cottage unique

Privately rural yet 10 minutes drive to the nearest town with full amenities, private parking for two cars. Just half an hour to the coast and 15 minutes to the Redes Natural Park.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Casa Ordiales is set in a beautiful rural location overlooking forrested hillsides and valleys. We were just 2 people but the house would comfortably sleep 6. We especially enjoyed the log burning stove in the kitchen, the private garden and the friendliness of the neighbours. It was nice to hear the owls calling in the night. The local town is not especially touristy or pretty but has all ammenities including restaurants and supermarkets. The beautiful Redes natural park was about a half hour drive and we went for some lovely picturesque walks. it is nice to wander around the village too. The coast with some good beaches is around 40 minutes drive.

In the basics nice place to stay.

  • 3 of 5

The house is beautifully located in a tiny village on the mountain. The road ro get there is very steep with sharp turns. The garden is lovely the house is decorated in a warm style.

Problem is the moist. We had to burn candles all the time to try to get rit of the smell. In the living room plaster has come of the ceiling. Upstairs floor is bouncing because of the moisture in ceiling/first floor. I contacted the owner about this she had no reaction whilst upfront the contact was fine.

We had a good stay but because of the moist thing I would not recommend the house. This needs to be addressed before new visitors.

Rustic charm with modern facilities

  • 5 of 5

This traditional house is part of the small community ‘La Magdalena’, just outside El Entrego, which is a 45 minute drive from Oviedo airport. A major part of its charm is undoubtedly its setting on the side of a south-facing hillside overlooking open countryside and the mountains beyond. There is ample seating outside to enjoy the views, with a welcome shady spot under the orange tree if the sun gets too much. It is a perfect base from which to explore this exciting part of northern Spain.

Accommodation includes an open plan downstairs room comprising a modern kitchen range with all modern conveniences you could wish for including a dishwasher and fridge/freezer. There is a dining table to seat 6 as well as additional seating for relaxation. There is also a separate television room.

Upstairs you will find a bathroom, recently updated with a tasteful modern suite and an excellent shower over the bath. There are three bedrooms; one double, a twin and a small third bedroom with bunk beds, ideal for children. There is ample storage space for clothes and the whole house has a light and airy feel. It remains remarkably cool during the summer; a welcome oasis when it’s getting warm outside. However, if you are planning to stay during winter months the entire property is double glazed and has shutters to keep out the cold. There are two woodburning stoves downstairs and I imagine it to be lovely and cosy once these are blazing away.

The surrounding area is what we would term ‘proper Spain’ and largely unexposed to mainline tourism. Bars, restaurants and the numerous attractions are very much geared to the local clientele, so you can easily immerse yourself in their culture and traditions. Cider (sidre) is the local speciality and, in certain bars, the art of pouring a glass of sidre is not to be missed. The interesting and varied coastline is some 40 minutes away and here we found bustling fishing villages and almost deserted sandy beaches. However, the main attraction for the area must be the mighty Picos de Europa National Park, which lies approximately a 1 hour drive through magnificent scenery to the east.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and can’t wait to return to explore more that this fabulous part of Spain has to offer.

A nice house in very peaceful surroundings.

  • 4 of 5

We have spent a very peaceful month here. It is in a beautiful area surrounded by nature. We live in the south of Spain and came to Asturias to escape the extreme heat for a while. The area lived up to it's expectations and provided us with the solitude that we are used to. To wake up to the clouds floating by the window was a delight and the cooler weather was a bonus for us. The house is very comfortable and met our every need. The garden is large and very beautiful. If you like to spend time in peaceful surroundings away from any sign of tourists then this is the place. If you want a cafe on every corner then it is not. All things being equal we will return.

Great Experience of the Asturian Countryside!

  • 4 of 5

We were lucky to spent 2 weeks in this lovely house in April 2015. Fabulous spot in a tiny village half way up the mountains that flank the Nalon Valley. If you like the countryside, its slow pace and sounds, this is a wonderful place!

It’s the last house at the end of a little path, it is private and has a very pleasant ambience. The garden is secluded and great for having breakfasts/lunches/dinners while enjoying the lovely views. Certainly one of our daily highlights was waking up and looking over the top of the orange tree (!) down the valley.

We found plenty of nice walking straight from the house in the surrounding hills and forest.

Occasionally we went on short trips in the close surroundings such as the Redes Natural Park and to the coast. The coastal areas are around 45 mins by car, beautiful, quaint fishing villages and scenic beaches delightfully devoid of tourists at this time.

Secluded private authentic North Spain experience.

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our holiday here in September 2010. This was our first visit to the area and this was a great base to explore from. This is not really a seaside place although we were able to get to the Costa Verde beaches in 35-40 minutes. The local area and mountains wre The views from the house were gorgeous and we spent a lot of time in the garden chilling. The kids were really welcomed by locals, the prices in the small local resturants were really ammenable and you just have to try Fabada the local bean and chorizo stew. The kitchen was particularly great to hang out in and we appreciated the dry food stocks that were there for emergencies. Geraldine the owner was really helpful and there was loads of info about the area available in the house. Also an eclectic mix of DVD´s.

Good rural getaway, plenty of room

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at Casa Ordiales with 4 adults, 2 children and an infant. The owners were very helpful with supplying a cot. This house is in a very small rural village so felt "authentic" Spanish. The locals were friendly and even though we spoke little Spanish, they were happy to chat. The house was a good base for trips to Oviedo, Gijon, Villaviciosa and to Redes National Park. The rooms were fine, having a dishwasher was handy. The backyard was great in summer, we ate meals in the sun and enjoyed the fantastic views across the valley. Nearby El Entrego has a really well stocked hypermarket so there was no trouble getting supplies.

Car: necessary

Casa Ordiales is surrounded by its own private garden. Ideal for secluded relaxing. For those needing to keep in touch there is a good mobile signal and wifi. The local village is pretty and the nearest shops are in the local town of El Entrego just a five minutes drive.

The Redes Natural Park is nearby with its pretty, distinctive villages, beautiful forests, tumbling streams, attractive countryside, well marked trails, high alpine meadows and imposing limestone mountains. The way of life here is steeped in culture. The area is perfect for all manner of activities including fly fishing on the Nalon River, walking on well marked trails, rock climbing, mountaineering, pony trekking, caving, mountain biking, or gentle picnicking!

The coast of the Costa Verde is famous for wild unspoiled beaches. Some of the nicest are around 40 minutes drive away.

World class rock climbing venues of Quiros and Terverga are a fifty minute drive, with several sports climbing areas of all grades spread around the area. In the Valles del Trubia is the famous Senda del Osos, the walk of the bears, a 22kl flat, marked trail though easy but spectacular scenery. There is also some lovely walking straight from the house with no need to drive. The road to the property is steep and narrow.

The house is situated in a typical Asturian village, very rural. Old stone houses, wooden horreos on stilts, authentic and friendly Asturian villagers, fruit trees bursting with fruit and nuts; both in the garden and the surrounding area. Lovely walking straight from the house both in the village and the surrounding hills. It is very safe for children.
