About Stuart and Gillian Maiden

Hello, we are Stuart and Gillian Maiden. This is us enjoying refreshments in front of the Maison du Magique in Blois. We recommend taking some time to rest here on your visit to Blois and enjoy the chateau views and life passing by. Oh yes and from around Easter an additional surprise!

Stuart and Gillian Maiden purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Stuart and Gillian Maiden chose Gy-en-Sologne

We discovered we'd both loved France from an early age starting from French exchanges whilst a secondary schools. Gillian made live long friends in Vero and Olivier during her exchanges and it was because they lived in this area that we decided to buy our second home here. Vero was very supportive and scouted out loads of houses for us to view. In addition to the number of rooms we were looking for a renovated house in a small village near a boulangerie. We had begun to despair on the French understanding of renovated. Had we translated the wrong word?! Nothing had been quite right.

However, we knew when we parked in the village square of Gy en Sologne that we'd found the right place. We were almost shown separately around the cottage between the owner's son and the estate agent and met up in the courtyard smiling. Neither of us had to say anything. We knew this was the one! Then we were told there was more! And on that hot afternoon we walked to the edge of the village to see the allotment, field and wood that came with it.

What makes this cottage unique

When we bought the cottage one of the three doors at the top of the stairs opened into the roof with a low beam. This gave us the chance to add a bit of ourselves and the beam was raised and our lovely master bedroom created.

In addition to the cottage being within easy reach of our friends it has allowed us to make new friends in the village too. We enjoy just being there, Stuart enjoys cutting timber in the wood and Gillian now has her own tractor to 'cut the grass'. Our local Explorer Scouts in England come over and camp 'au nature' in the field.

When we can we enjoy village events such as the Fete de la Garde, a festival which celebrates the local hunting . We enjoy the easy walking around the area through woodlands and by the etangs (ponds) for which the region is well known. There's plenty to see in the area too. We still haven't exhausted the magnificent chateaux and local markets. The terrace is a true sun trap but in the late spring and summer you don't need to go too far to find an outdoor pool - we particularly like the one at St. Aignan. All year round in the evening it's lovely to eat outside and enjoy the stars. The village street lights switch off just before eleven pm, so the stars are brilliant and well worth a midnight walk on a clear night! If it's too cold though relaxing by the log fire is also a must. Living next door to Gy Suis Gy Reste is a real bonus. The restaurant is well worth a visit for regional home cooked food at lunchtime or to pop in for aperitif before an evening meal at home.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Nous avons passe une très bonne semaine dans votre maison. Votre location est très bien et c'est dommage car nous aurions du rester une semaine en plus.

Traditional house in a quiet village

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in the Gy en Sologne. The house is in the center of a pretty village close to the castles in the area. Clean and well maintained. It had all a family like ours (4 kids) needs, including toys and a baby bed.

Comfortable holiday gite

  • 5 of 5

We spent two weeks in this well equipped, comfortable holiday house in a very quiet and unspoilt country village. The rooms are spacious and comfortably furnished. There is no garden but there is a patio with roll out awning. It was so hot while we were there we hardly sat out on it. Great area for cycling & trying to learn French - no English spoken but nevertheless kind people all around.

Cute, quaint, clean and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

A very well equipped little house that worked as a good base for our week’s exploration of the Sologne area. Several well known and lesser known chateaux are within easy driving distance, and there are some nice cycling or walking tracks nearby, too.

The weather was very changeable during our stay, so we appreciated both the central heating and wood burner plus the patio and sun awning.

Wifi would have been good, but we were able to make use of the wifi in the friendly cafe next door while we had a coffee or aperitif.

Delightful cottage in a quiet location.

  • 3 of 5

Whilst the cottage was really nice I have to make a number of comments from a personal view point.

1) the welcome pack was written only in French and I feel it would be beneficial to have a translation in 2/3 languages.

2) All of the cupboards were full of crockery and no space left to store groceries.

3) A list of closest shops/supermarkets/service stations/restaurants etc would be helpful. Also a mention of days when shops are closed.

4) A list of places of interest would be nice along with local markets.

5) A contact number in case of.emergencies.(Had I not specifically asked for a contact number in the event of our late arrival we should not have been able to gain entry to the property as it was secured and the information as to the location of the keys had not been given to me).

The majority of these points are what would go toward making the stay a little more pleasurable.

Owner's Response: Dear Alan, Thank you for your comments. We really appreciate your feedback. We're really sorry the English welcome pack was not in the house and are not sure where it had gone for your stay. Sadly for you it does include most of the information you suggest including a list of markets Supermarkets etc. We'll look into adding some more of this information to this website too. There's also a big red folder on the bookcase containing loads of brochures for places of interest - we will check if this has all disappeared too. Late arrivals are exactly why we introduced the secure key box with the special code. We know the fridge is quite large but appreciate your feedback about space and we will make some cupboard space for groceries for future guests. Thanks again and we hope to welcome you again in the future. Best wishes, Gillian and Stuart

Loire Valley Escape

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our trip to the Loire Valley, the area is really in the countryside and lovely and peaceful. The cottage was clean, well equipped and roomy. We had some good trips out to Blois (the Chateau is really nice) and the town had some good shops, Clos Luce Parc (which is where Leonardo da Vinci lived), this was very popular with school trips etc. and is well worth a visit, as was Orleans (for shops etc.). We had a good day out also at the Zoo Parc de Beauval, not cheap but well worth it. We used the bikes to cycle to Billy (down the road) and also played table tennis in the garage. Thanks to Gillian and Stuart for their instructions to get to the property from Calais, we didn't get lost once ;-) We went to a local restaurant in Lassay sur Croisne which Gillian recommended and had a lovely meal. We had a couple of really nice walks down by the canal which is signposted as Pont de Sauldre. Thank you again for the use of your lovely house in such a lovely peaceful area.

Gy En Sologne Cottage and surrounding area

  • 5 of 5

We have visited this property on two occassions, both times during the Easter Vacation. The cottage was exactly as listed with 3 spacious bedrooms, a well equipped kitchen, an ample dining area and comfortable lounge area with a beautiful log burning stove. The cottage was clean and homely with all mod cons necessary for a stay of any length. The courtyard at the back of the property provides ample parking and a secure and secluded sitting area for when the sun shines and it becomes a sun trap.

The owners give excellent customer service. They provided clear directions from Calais which helped us to avoid over expensive toll roads. The cottage has a wonderful homely feel created by the little personal touches (the alarm clock in the main bedroom is fascinating) and they have provided lots of information to help with planning days out etc.

The local bakery has wonderful croissants and rolls all baked fresh each day and is open from about 7am. The bar / restaurant right next door is well worth a visit or two - for a local beer in friendly surroundings and the plat du jour is an absolute must! Four courses of local produce and lots of local wine for an extremely fair price.

The immediate area is great for walking with interesting woods to explore and little villages to discover. Towns within a 5 mile radius provide ample dining opportunities ranging from pizza to fine dining. Parking is available and directions are easy to follow.

We visited lots of Chateau's all within 90 minutes drive of the cottage. Blois was a big favourite but Chenonceau, Ambois and Cheverny are well worth a visit. A great day out is a trip to Beauval Zoo which is well sign posted and less than 45 mins drive away. It is a wonderful place with animals from all over the world, all looking happy and well cared for.

We would, and have, recommended this cottage to friends and we look forward to visiting it ourselves in future.
