We are family owned and operated and have been in the accommodations business since 1990, beginning with our 6 tourist cabins near Denali National Park in Alaska, where we built our first home. We were raised in Central and Northern Wisconsin. We know how to treat our guests and provide what you are looking for to have the perfect "getaway." Our lake is crystal clear with sandy beaches and excellent fishing.
The suite is a "mother-in-law" suite above our garage, with your own private stairway entry, private bath with shower/sink/toilet, 1 Queen size bed and a kitchenette, dining area and reading chair. It has most everything that you will need. We provide the towels and linens! You must be able to climb a rather steep stairway to your entrance.
*** Nonsmoking. No pets. 1-3 Night Minimum Stay depending on the dates. ****
Free Wi-Fi and Samsung LED Smart TV for live streaming TV apps and online sites. No Cable or Satellite TV Reception.
The Apartment is not large enough to have a 3rd person in the room so please don't ask us to accommodate more than 2 people, unless it is an infant in a play and pack. We simply cannot accommodate anyone older than that.
We have been renting out the suite on a nightly basis during the summer, since 2012. We are fully licensed, permitted and inspected by the county health department and collect state and county sales tax of 5.5%. We are open Mid May - Mid October. If the snow comes early, we close early. We are easy to find and are accessible by highway. Our 0.10 mile driveway is entirely paved.
You may bring food and cook using the microwave and outside natural gas grill.
**PLEASE NOTE: THERE IS NOT A STOVE/OVEN IN THE SUITE**
No hotplates, electric frying pans or other cooking appliances are allowed inside the suite due to fire hazard and liability.
Our well water is super good tasting and healthy. It is tested annually. No need to bring bottled water! We also use the Culligan water system to soften the water and to remove traces of iron.

Lake Size: 156 Acres. Maximum Depth 62 feet. Natural spring fed lake. 3 miles of shoreline.
Lake Notes: Specializing in Northern Pike, Muskie and Bluegill. Walleye, Large & Smallmouth Bass and panfish are also numerous. We are on a chain of lakes. Deer Lake connects to Bridge Lake & Lake Nokomis (The Rice Reservoir) via a channel which is usually only navigable through early-mid July. As of July 5, the water is still high! After that, the water level in the channel is usually too low to get through with a motor. Usually, we can still kayak through.
We have 3, 1-person kayaks and a 2-person canoe available for your free use along with life jackets. Swimming, canoeing and kayaking are at your own risk and you will be asked to sign a liability waiver.
Fishing boat, Pontoon Boat and Personal Watercraft rentals are available at Tomahawk Sports Center in Tomahawk - 5 miles south. We do not allow usage of any motorized boats that we may have.
Changing Gears Pedal & Paddle is 3 miles south and has bicycles, kayaks and paddle boards available for rent.
Usually, we have plenty of room available on the beach or dockside if you bring a boat. There is a nearby boat ramp on the lake and a couple on Lake Nokomis. Please let us know if you are bringing a boat.
We use the private main house year round and will usually be on property.
No public transportation is available. There is a taxi service in Tomahawk but I don't know how reliable they are. You will need to have your own vehicle or motorcycle.
If you bring a motorcycle or two, we can provide garage space for them.
There is a family house dog on the property but she is never allowed inside the apartment. Lexi is a very loving, people-friendly Goldendoodle (half golden retriever, half standard poodle) who doesn't shed and is nonallergenic. Lexi was born in 2010.
We encourage you to walk the numerous trails that we created throughout our 7+ acres and our additional 12 acres nearby on Wurl Rd. You will always hear or see wildlife to view and photograph.
You are welcome to be outside on the property. The grounds and the apartment are for your use. The main cottage and garages are private. You can use the outdoor tables, chairs, fire pit, 3 kayaks up on the kayak stand, canoe, grill, full size fridge/freezer in the garage, dock, deck, and patios.
You may interact with us as much or as little as you prefer! We will respect your privacy and allow you to have the vacation that you deserve and want. We are usually here and you can always ring the doorbell, text us or find us outside for anything that you might need.
We look forward to hosting you in the near future!
Monte & Shirley Lamer
We also live in Middleton, WI (Madison)
My husband Monte, works for the University of Wisconsin Madison at one of their power plants downtown on campus. He is an operator at the plant.
I am an RN but no longer work outside the home. My nursing career was a short 8 years before getting married and moving to Alaska. I was a Cardiac/Medical ICU CCRN at the UW Hospital in Madison, WI.
Our children were born in Fairbanks, Alaska. We raised a son and a daughter who both played hockey since they were 5 years old along with soccer.. We were on the road a lot. Our daughter is 25 and living/working in MN. Our son is 21 and attending college at UW Stevens Point. You will probably meet or see Hunter because he will be working this summer in Tomahawk and living at the lake home.
We have a long history of providing lodging for tourists. Monte was raised on a nearby lake resort where his parents still live. Their resort has been in continuous operation since the 1930's. We have provided lodging to tourists since we were married in 1989, first in Alaska for 9 years with 6 cabins for visitors to Denali National Park and now here in northern Wisconsin.
We love to travel and try to stay in family owned/operated places as much as possible. We meet new friends when we travel and we hope you will too, with us!
Shirley Lamer purchased this studio in 2003
Monte purchased this land in 1988, the year before we were married. He was living in Alaska, and had been since 1975, after he graduated from Tomahawk HS. Monte's paternal great grandfather, owned a majority of the property on the eastern lake shore along Deer Lake Road and on other local lakes. His cousins inherited or purchased some of the land later on. Monte was raised here, a half mile down the back road on the next lake west - Crystal Lake. His great grandparents, then his grandparents and now his parents still own and operate the family resort.
I started coming to the Tomahawk area with my family when I was 8 years old in 1967. My parents over the years, built two cottages on Lake Nokomis and we would come up every weekend and all summer. We lived in Marshfield, WI. My family met Monte's family that first year and have been friends ever since.
When we married in 1989, I moved to Alaska from Madison, WI. Monte had already built a home and 2 rental cabins on his 12 acres of land in Healy, just outside of Denali National Park. The following year we opened Healy Heights Family Cabins and built 4 more cabins for tourist lodging. We owned and operated the business for 9 years and were full from May thru September with up to 28 guests a night. In 1998, we sold everything and moved back to Wisconsin to be closer to family. That was when we started to use this lake property with our young children aged 3 and 7. We purchased a travel trailer and stayed in it when we were up north, for a few years, before we custom built the cottage in 2003. We love it here and never want to leave the lake to go back to the city after our stay is up.
This is a peaceful, quiet setting in the woods and on the lake with nature and it's sounds all around. We think we have a beautiful property and love to share it with others. You will feel like you are in your own little world here and life's stresses will be forgotten when you drive down our long winding driveway to the sanctuary we provide. It is our little slice of heaven, away from it all. The lake always draws us back and is missed when we are away. Even during the long cold winters when it is frozen over, we put out our ice fishing shack and enjoy family and friends on the lake.
When the loons return as soon as the lake opens up in April, we love to hear their variety of calls, knowing that they are back with us again for another summer. We excitedly search for the presence of their baby chicks on their backs while gliding through the water. It is always a very welcomed sight to see that they have hatched another chick or two.
The smell of camp fires, the sounds of bull frogs and crickets at night, and crows cawing in the morning, pileated woodpeckers drilling a tree, eagles flying overhead, tall pine forests and clear lakes are all part of our love of being up north at the lake.
My favorite times of the day are early morning just after sunrise and dinner time just before sunset. Watching the sunset over the lake from the dock is very special along with watching the fish surface on calm-water evenings and the great blue heron, bald eagles, deer, occasional black bear, ducks, loons and geese going about their day. Nature abounds here. You will feel the draw and hopefully become a part of it also.
The pictures don't do the apartment or area justice. It's a beautiful place on a beautiful property...fancier than what the pictures reveal. The apartment has a kitchen, dining area, sitting area, bed and bath. The family was very friendly and willing to help out or answer any questions we had. They were very willing to share their wonderful property and access to Deer Lake. We biked and kayaked each day we were there. We would recommend the stay at the apartment to any couple that wanted a place to stay in the Deer Lake or Tomahawk area. Happy Vacationing!
What a wonderful place to relax and unwind! The suite was beautiful and immaculate. Everything we could have possible needed was there including two binders full of information on the area, restaurants, things to do, etc. Shirley, Monte, and Lexi all made us feel so welcome. The weather was rainy, but we were able to enjoy a walk and several bike rides between the rain showers. We also spent quite a bit of time just sitting by the lake enjoying the view each day we were there. We feel so fortunate to be allowed us to visit their beautiful place for the weekend. I hope we are able to go back in the future.
Husband and i needed to get away and de-stress, unplug, completely relax in advance of my milestone birthday (the big 6-0). Husband is kind of outdoorsy-I'm what you call indoorsy. I wanted all the creature comforts so we started looking for resort type properties. Most advertised catered to families/kids but we didn't want a crowded noisy resort. We found Shirley & Monte's "cottage" and thought it was just the right fit for us. We arrived and checked out our accomodations-NICE! We were impressed with our suite which had everything we needed and was so nicely appointed with the Up North decor and very nice finishes, appliances, snacks, AC. The landscaping is breathtaking and the walk across the yard to the dock and lake is purely delightful--a parklike setting with lush gardens, sculpture, seating. And LEXI! Lexi is the most adorable golden doodle. She is a doll and we loved when she came out to greet us and get petted. Good Dog!
Our romantic get away was perfect in every way! We will definitely be back next summer!
We really enjoyed our stay. As mentioned by others, all the little things have been thought of by Shirley and provided for her guests' use. The Lakeside Suite was the perfect 'get-a-way' site as we were in the area for a class reunion, but like to have time to ourselves for reading, fishing, swimming, running and kayaking. Beautiful weather (window open at night, no air conditioning needed) added to our comfort. It felt like home.
This is such an amazing place and amazing family. The lake is absolutely a perfect lake for swimming. Our daughter had a blast walking the sandy shorelines. Highly recommend!!
My husband & I were recently in the area for a family event and found this cottage on HomeAway. We have always stayed in a hotel in Rhinelander in the past, but this was a MUCH better experience for basically the same price! The room was very well decorated and clean, and everything was laid out well and labelled. There was lots of useful information in binders - bike/hiking trails, restaurant menus, etc. There were DVDs and games and travel guides. I was very impressed with all of the information provided! And the grounds were beautiful!! Shirley does a great job taking care of all of her landscaping!! While we didn't spend a lot of time there in the evening because we had family events to attend, we spent time in the morning hanging out by the lake before we went out. It was a beautiful place to sit and relax! We did not meet Monte because he was not in town, but Shirley and her son Hunter were very nice and hospitable! We would definitely recommend this property to any couple who is looking to spend time in the area! We would definitely stay again!
Lamer suite was absolutely beautiful and the hosts were extremely friendly! We loved the northwoods furnishings in the cozy suite, and the grounds were stunning. The hosts were very accommodating, yet not at all intrusive. We enjoyed our days boating and fishing on Deer Lake and the connecting lakes. The evenings we spent at various pubs and restaurants in the area. We had a great time and would definitely recommend it to others!
Lots to do! Visit the online Tomahawk Chamber website for more info along with our Guide Book and other online searches before your arrival.
There are numerous ATV trails in Lincoln and the surrounding counties for your use. They allow ATV's in Tomahawk on designated city streets.
We are just 1.7 miles off the Bearskin State Park Trail and Hiawatha Trail for Biking, hiking and Snowmobiling! Easy to access from our property for a day of biking.
Motorcyclists love to ride the back roads of northern WI. The Annual Harley Davidson Fall Ride for MDA is in mid September which draws thousands of motorcycles to the area.
July 4th is a huge celebration along with Pow Wow Days, and every month has special events.
We are 5 miles north of Tomahawk, 17 miles west of Rhinelander, 25 miles south of Minocqua and close to many northwoods destinations.
