Come relax at a quiet camp near Spring Bayou in Marksville

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,000 sq. ft.
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

This is a 3/br 2/bath property sitting on 0.5 acres overlooking the beautiful Little River near the Spring Bayou Wildlife Management Area. The property has a fishing dock and ample parking for vehicles and boats. If you are looking for a quiet getaway with plenty of good fishing, this place will not disappoint. There are tons of great restaurants nearby and the Paragon Casino is only ten minutes away! Note: The property is located off the beaten path and there are gravel roads on the way. While these gravel roads are well maintained, your vehicle may get a bit dusty or muddy, depending on the weather.

We expect our guests to behave with the civility and trustworthiness of a family friend. Sorry, no smoking. House is not child-proofed! Parents agree to mind their children vigilantly inside (art, antiques, family heirlooms abound!) and outdoors (there are pets & domesticated animals, snakes, stinging insects, and assorted other wild critters out here in the country!).

About Jason Poret

My name is Jason. I grew up in Avoyelles Parish, fishing and hunting in and around the Spring Bayou area. Beginning with my grandfather, my family has owned a camp in this area and have kept the tradition going. I currently live in South Louisiana but visit "home" often.

Jason Poret purchased this cabin in 2011

Away from it all, but with all the conveniences of home

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for three nights in August 2017 and LOVED it.

Pros: The cabin was clean and well-maintained, with plenty of room to sleep six comfortably (and maybe a couple more if you don't mind close quarters). The linens were beautiful, the furniture was comfortable, and the kitchen was pretty well stocked with the basics, such as plates and glasses and silverware. We greatly appreciated having many conveniences such as a microwave, several TVs including two with DirectTV, a small library of DVDs to watch, a washer and dryer, and a coffee pot. The fire pit had a bunch of trash in it for some reason (the last guest??) but there was also plenty of kindling and wood, so we were able to enjoy roasting marshmallows. Very good seating by the fire, several benches. There is a nice porch upstairs, overlooking the water, with a table and a couple of chairs to sit and sip coffee, and a swing below the house, in addition to the fishing deck (which looked brand new). Lots of places to relax outside. The town is maybe a ten minute drive, and there are several fun restaurants. I can recommend Maglieaux's in the downtown area for a romantic evening or slightly more upscale family dining, and Crispy Chicken on Philo St for a casual and kid-friendly place. Drive just a little farther toward the casino and there's a Wal-Mart and a number of the usual chain fast food places. We didn't visit the casino - this was a mom-and-kids trip - but if you enjoy gambling, it is close by and looked nice.

Cons: not many. The only thing we really didn't like was the rough drive out. It's about a mile and a half or so from the main paved road to the cabin, and while the road IS well maintained - you won't get lost or stuck or anything - it's dirt/gravel and you get a LOT of vibration and bounce. Drive slow!! We had also hoped to see more wildlife, but it was mostly a variety of birds (a blue heron visited the fishing deck one morning), lots of bugs and a couple frogs. Brought a fishing pole, didn't catch anything, but my kids aren't particularly patient :/

All in all, I highly recommend this as a great place to stay. The owner provides plenty of info and responds quickly to communications, if you happen to need anything.

Last tip - don't bother visiting the nearby "wildlife management area" around the south side of the bayou. Hard to find, rough drive, and not much there that you don't already have right at the cabin.

Happy vacationing!

Very relaxing and close to nature!

  • 5 of 5

Hands down one of the best places we've stayed at. The amount of wildlife seen and heard (~38 species of birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, inverts) was astounding. So peaceful to sit on the porch or on the deck while fishing. Caught a bunch of bluegill sunfish as well. Truly a gem and so nice to be so close to the Spring Bayou Wildlife Management area. Bring your Peterson field guides to id critters and enjoy the occasional sighting of the alligator. We'll be back!

Perfect for a Louisiana outdoor adventure

  • 5 of 5

Our primary objective was to find a spot off the beaten path to fish and explore the Louisiana bayous by boat, and that was exactly what we found. From this house, you have access to hundreds of miles of beautiful cypress lined rivers and bayous, and then park your boat directly in front of a very clean and well maintained home. We particularly enjoyed relaxing around the fire pit at night and fishing from the pier. The house had everything we needed for a group of 7 and could not have asked for a more accommodating owner. Thank you for sharing this hidden treasure!
