Although today Megara is a quiet suburb of a very modern metropolitan Athens, it was once a city of great importance in its own right. In fact, according to Greek mythology Megara was once the seat of power for the entire Peloponnese under the rule of King Car -- the second recorded king of the region. Mythology continued to reference Megara for centuries linking it to stories of Theseus, Hercules, Scylla and the great war between Crete and Athens. Visitors to Megara won't see much of the city's ancient greatness, but a few museums help keep culture alive.

1. Archaeological Museum of Megara

Greece is proud of its past and as a nation, has developed extensive programs for the care and preservation of art and architecture. The Archaeological Museum of Megara ( is backed by the Greek government and houses prehistoric and classical antiquities. Visitors can learn about how unearthed and carefully preserved pottery, artifacts and buildings tell the story of Megara and its people's thousands of years of existence.

During the off-season months of November through March, the museum maintains abbreviated hours of 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., while the rest of the year it remains open until 5 p.m. At the time of publication, admission was €2 per person. However, the museum waives admission fees Sundays from November through March; the first Sunday of April, May, June and August; the second Sunday of July and August; and on National Tourism Day, September 27.

2. Skironio Museum Polychronopoulos

At the Skironio Museum Polychronopoulos (, Megara focuses on the present and future rather than its rich past. The former home and studio of renowned Greek sculptor Kostas Polychronopoulos was turned into a museum in 1983. Operating as an independent nonprofit under governmental charter, the Skironio provides educational programs for children and the community as well as displays of Polychronopoulos' and other sculptors' work. The modern-designed building sits on a cliff overlooking the Aegean making its grounds and views as beautiful as the art it contains.

3. Acrocorinth

Acrocorinth, "Upper Corinth", the acropolis of ancient Corinth, is a monolithic rock overseeing the ancient city of Corinth, Greece. "It is the most impressive of the acropolis of mainland Greece," in the estimation of George Forrest. Currently, Acrocorinth is one of the most important medieval castle sites of Greece. It is 52 klm from Megara, approximately 40 min. (

Megara and the surrounding areas have a plethora of beaches. Vardaris beach, the one in front of the house is beautiful and considered among the cleanest beaches in Attica ( If you want, however, something more organized, here are some suggestions:

1. Kinetta Beach - This principal tourist spot , 14 klm from Megara, attracts both those looking for a day in the sun or a multi-day getaway. 2. Kozi Beach – The beach bar Kozi is located at Varea beach.

3. Alepochori Beach - is about 25 km far from Megara. The route from Megara to the Beach of Alepochori is “into the green”,since you cross the pine forest of the region. It has crystal clear waters, while the visitor at the beach will mostly come across small pebbles although in some parts of the beach there is sand. There are picturesque fish-taverns in the region as well as organised beach bars so as for the visitor to spend pleasantly his day.
