Navy House is a family holiday cottage on the edge of the idyllic South Hams village of Kingston, recently voted Calor 'Best Village in West England 2009'. The cottage retains many traditional features including a large inglenook fireplace with a log burner in the living room, exposed beams and a decorative open fireplace in the dining room. To the front of the cottage is a large garden offering plenty of space for BBQs and alfresco dining and for those days when you want a break from the beach.
The village is picturesque with thatched roofs and traditional architecture. At the heart of the village is a 16th century pub offering an 'Olde World' atmosphere and traditional ales. The cottage is ideally situated for exploring the south coast and Dartmoor. The nearest beaches are Mothecombe, Wonwell Beach, Westcombe and Bigbury. The area offers a wealth of activities from walks, canoing, fishing, sailing, surfing, golf, shopping in Salcombe, Plymouth, Modbury and Kingsbridge, and great restaurants.
Navy House is let to sleep 6 people (although there are 8 beds available, two of which a small junior bunk beds). Upstairs there is one double bedroom, 2 interconnecting twin rooms, and one small room with bunk beds as well as the bathroom. Downstairs is another WC, the kitchen, the dining room and sitting room. The sitting room has a log burner. There is a large private garden. Bed linen can be provided, but guests need to provide their own towels.
The secluded and little known Westcombe Beaches are a 30 minute walk away, accessible by footpath. In the nearby village of Bigbury-on-Sea there is an 18 hole golf course and the famous Burgh Island Hotel.
Kingston is 20 miles from Plymouth and 10 miles from the A38. The nearest shops are in the village of Modbury, 4 miles away. There is an excellent 16th century pub in Kingston. Dartmoor is very close at hand and there are a variety of wonderful walks along the South Devon cliffs.
If you are more than 6 people in your party you might be interested in renting the next door property to Navy House as well - The Anchorage. This cottage is advertised on Owner's Direct, reference E13854.
We've just come home from this lovely, lovely cottage. It is very quaint (like something out of a Jane Austen novel) and quirky. The room layout upstairs may not be for everyone but we were on our hols and wanted a change from the norm. It's in a fab position for daily excursions out to beaches and towns and because the weather was glorious, we still had time to sit in the sunny garden later on. Unfortunately the local pub had new owners the day we arrived so they weren't set up for food but we had a welcome drink. The kids loved the park up the hill. It's very well kept and my scooter dude son loved the deserted skate ramps.
I would definitely recommend a stay at Navy House. From beginning to end I've had prompt replies to my many queries and never once have I had a negative response.
Now I just have to convince my husband to make the journey from Cheshire next year!!
We had a lovely week at Navy Cottage. The weather was kind, the house was cosy and the garden and location were great. There are beautiful walks down to the beach, the local pub - The Dolphin - was as friendly as ever.
Great cosy cottage with lovely large garden ideal for kids. Loved being able to walk to a pub with good food and just around the corner a lovely park for the kids. Not too far to go to some lovely beaches. Would not hesitate to recommend this place.
We had a lovely relaxing week in a very nice, cosy and comfortable cottage with a suntrap of a garden. We loved the village and the Dolphin Inn - a very friendly pub with great food. The playground at the top of the hill was also great for the kids. A beautiful area with great walks from the door and attractive local villages & pubs, not to mention fabulous beaches.
Would highly recommend it for a family holiday.
Fabulous cottage...missing the open fire already and the cosiness of the house!
Great location close to the gorgeous Bigbury beach. We also visited Kingsbridge with lots of delis, bakeries and quirky cafes...and the aquarium in Plymouth...and there is lots on our list for next time Totnes, Salcombe etc...
The cottage is private without being cut off, Kingston is a delightful village and the icing on the cake for us is the great playground 5 min walk from the house!
Two families with one toddler each could have been the holiday from hell but we had a fabulous time at Navy House...the house boasts a large secure garden with table & chairs for alfresco meals, a very comfortable living room with games, books, DVD player etc..., spacious bedrooms, a fully kitted kitchen etc.. all you need for a very comfortable stay in Devon!
Its location is IDEAL and really made the difference between a good holiday and a great holiday!
