Why Thomas English chose Seneca Lake

Family owned since 1932.

What makes this cottage unique

The English Cottage sits on a large piece of property on a bluff offering the true feeling that you are away from it all. The sense of privacy yet intimacy with the lake envelops you offering peace and solitude. And yet, there is a lake community just down the road should you want to connect with like minded souls.

Our team visiting from Atlanta, GA and Red Wing, MN loved our visit to this lakeside home and the Finger Lakes. For most of us, it was our first time in the area.

First, anyone considering renting this place should be delighted to know this rental is more than a house: it has been home to the owners' family since the 1930s. You can feel the love here. We were guests. We enjoyed the family photos and the simplicity of the home and decor. The view of the lake was equal to the warmth of the “voices” we could hear in the walls of your family’s place. Uncluttered. Fresh. Quiet. Practical. Charming. Lovely.

Sitting on a small bluff over the eastern shore of Lake Seneca, the breezes were a welcome respite from the heat of summer in Georgia. The house is located on Valois Point, on a dead-end road off the main county road. Not one single car passed in front of the house during our four night visit. Look for the outhouse. A three-holer that is still serviceable for those that want to experience it.

The kitchen is loaded with every kind of spatula, knife, chopper, bowl, grater, brewer, corer, etc. you can imagine. You just know all of these items were used during huge family gatherings for years. An old fashion CD player offers a nice selection of jazz and classical music. There are more kitchen and bath towels in this place than a family of 300 could go through in a weekend.

In summary, the house was/is a Living Museum, equal parts history and real life contemporary practicality. What a beautiful part of this country, too. We will be back and we will approach the English family to rent again. Thank Ms. Schup, the care taker, too. She was wonderful. She is proof that retirement from corporate life can lead to a fulfilling, simpler life.

A Serene Getaway on Beautiful Lake Seneca

  • 5 of 5

The English's Cottage was a glorious place to relax and watch the beautiful sunsets over Lake Seneca. The Cottage's greeter/super, Mrs. Shupp is friendly and kind. She was very accommodating regarding our later-than-expected arrival and provided a thorough tour of the Cottage and its property, along with helpful information on local farmer's markets, swimming spots, etc. The Cottage itself has a gorgeous view of the lake and is quite comfortable, with both the spacious kitchen and bathroom clean and well-stocked. The only "con" we had during our stay was that the weather was unusually hot and humid, so the second floor air conditioner, which is located in a hallway window, did a wonderful job of cooling the hallway, but not the lake-facing bedroom where one of us was staying. Fortunately there were several good fans, which helped. (In addition, the stairs to the second floor are narrow and steep. This was not a problem for us, but might be for those with limited mobility; that being said, there's a very nice bedroom on the first floor). Over all, we loved staying at the Cottage and would absolutely stay there again. Thom English, the owner, is terrific -- contact-wise, he's not only prompt and engaging, but also full of fun stories about the history of the property and helpful recommendations about the surrounding area's many attractions. The English's Cottage is a sweet, serene, relaxing (and very reasonably priced) experience!

Owner's Response: On the rare occasion of hot nights (it usually cools down in the evening during the summer) we have a system to keep the upstairs cool by closing windows during the day and then opening them at night. We also have a system of how to position the fans with the upstairs air conditioner for cooler nights that we are happy to share with future renters. We are considering adding another air conditioner to the top floor. The stairs were built in 1880 and are part of the original design of the cottage, adding to it's charm. For someone who has disabilities, it would not be advisable to sleep in the upstairs bedrooms and to use the one downstairs.

Wonderful relaxation & beauty!

  • 5 of 5

This was the second year we spent our annual 4 day getaway weekend at the incredible English's Cottage! We've made this trip for 12 years and this Cottage has become a home away from home. It's so beautiful & relaxing. Peaceful. The interior is comfortable & welcoming, like visiting a family member. We were able to have bonfires in the evening & watch a million stars come out. The view of the lake is lovely & a walk down the lane is inspired with beauty from days gone by. Finding The English's Cottage was a gift! We plan on spending many more enjoyable & happy times there. The four of us all miss being there already!

Excellent Stay at this Historic Home

  • 5 of 5

6 of us stayed in this Cottage for 3 nights while attending some concerts at Watkins Glenn International. We had a wonderful experience, the home was exactly what we were hoping for and all descriptions and pictures were accurate. Our host Thomas made sure we had everything we needed and went over in full detail all of the good restaurants and winerys in the area. We will definitely return and stay again the next time we are in the area.

2nd visit to the Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This was my 2nd visit to the English Cottage and definitely won't be my last! My husband and I were there for our Anniversary week and it was just as great as my 1st visit. Very relaxing and comforting. I can't begin to tell you how unique, clean, accommodating & equipped the cottage is. And it's in the heart of all our favorite places, Hazlitt's, Two Goats, just minutes to Watkins Glen & Cayuga Lake. I really can't wait to plan another trip. Thanks for such a Wonderful place for my FLWC getaways!

Beautiful Home

  • 5 of 5

Thank you so very much for opening up your Beautiful Home to us. It was immaculate, warm, charming and very well stocked. We enjoyed all your Family Antiques and also enjoyed reading about the history of your Family. It was truly a wonderful relaxing weekend there. It was perfect for a Girls Getaway Weekend. We will definitely be returning.
