Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Benimeli - Country Cottage El Sequer

Cosy 2 bedroom Spanish villa (sleeps 4) in country village near Denia & Javea

El Sequer is a traditional Spanish country holiday cottage offering quality self-catering accommodation for 2 – 4 people. Originally a 19thC finca formerly used for producing raisins, it has been beautifully restored as an enchanting holiday home perfect as a romantic retreat for couples, small families or those seeking quiet and relaxation or outdoor activity holidays. It has 2 double bedrooms, bathroom, spacious lounge, kitchen, private garden & pool. Located on the outskirts of Benimeli, halfway between the coastal resorts of Denia & Javea and the famous wine producing Jalón valley, El Sequer offers the best of two worlds; the tranquillity of a rural setting yet easy access to the Costa Blanca’s fine sandy beaches (5 miles), and other areas providing a wide range of outdoor or cultural activities. Owners, Jenny and Oswaldo, will personally meet & greet you with welcome basket and amenities, and are at your disposal for any information you may require during your stay.

The self-catering holiday cottage El Sequer, a former 19thC Spanish finca or riu-rau, has been faithfully restored conserving original architectural features such as bamboo cane ceilings, wooden beams and terracotta floors. Tastefully decorated combining rustic details and Mediterranean colours, comfortably furnished and equipped to high standards, it accomodates up to 4 people in two double bedrooms: “Segaria” with its king-size antique bed, and “Rectoria” with twin beds, both overlooking the garden and pool. There is one full bathroom with a whirlpool bath.

A spacious and cosy living- dining room with sofas, fireplace, and TV/DVD; CD/radio player, is separated from the open-plan kitchen by the original well. The kitchen is fully equipped with fridge-freezer, oven, hob, microwave, dishwasher and other electrical appliances. Cutlery, glassware and flatware is also provided. The cottage has central heating and air-conditioning.

An adjoining utility room stores the washing machine, iron and board, two mountain bikes, child’s cot and garden and pool furniture.. Quality bed and bath linen is provided excepting beach towels.

Outdoors, the shady porch running the length of the cottage, ideal for al-fresco meals, enjoys breathtaking views of the lush valley and surrounding mountains. The secluded, enclosed garden and orange grove with private swimming pool , adjoining barbecue area and private parking lot, completes this unique holiday retreat where tranquillity and relaxation are assured.

There is a local horse-riding stable in Benimeli and we can organize horse riding outings or courses during your stay. Please consult us for further details.

We can also organize a variety of guided or unguided outdoor activities such as walks, hikes, cycling routes, gastronomic routes, wine tasting , cooking courses ( in English) etc.

About Mrs Jennifer Pilliner

My husband and I are an Anglo-Spanish couple who own and manage Mediterraneo Rural, (our small family business) which consists of two beautifully restored 19thC Spanish fincas or country homes (El Sequer & Xaymaca) that we rent out all year round as fully equipped self-catering holiday homes for families, couples or a group of friends wishing to holiday together..

Previously working for international companies in the north of Spain, in 1999 we decided to 'change our lifestyle' and take on this exciting project. With one foot already established in the area ( a village holiday home near Denia), we know the region very well and wanted to promote this inland area to those who prefer a more tranquil holiday, away from the highrise and bustling coast, and the chance to experience 'the real Spain'!

We personally greet and meet our guests and are at their disposal for any information or help they may need during their stay.

Mrs Jennifer Pilliner purchased this cottage in 1999

Why Mrs Jennifer Pilliner chose La Marina Alta

The concept of 'rural tourism' is not widely known outside Spain, but its idea is to restore and promote the inland regions of this incredible country. This implicates, restoring traditional farm buildings or village houses and promoting the wide variety of activities, nature, flora & fauna, walking & cycling routes, historic sites, etc that Spain's inland areas have to offer.

El Sequer is a 19thC typical farm building known as a 'riu-rau' where grapes were processed into raisins in an artisan manner. Located on the outskirts of the small village of Benimeli, (Alicante) in a southfacing location with panoramic views of the lush citrus producing Rectoria or Orba valley, it was the perfect spot for our first 'rural or country cottage'. Close enough to all amenities yet 'away from it all', El Sequer is the perfect holiday refuge for a small family or two couples. It took us a year to restore this old farmhouse respecting the traditional architecture and materials while equipping it with all modern facilities to create & provide a cosy 'home away from home' for our guests.

What makes this cottage unique

Benimeli, the village we chose to buy and restore our holiday homes, offers everything that a visitor could want while on holiday and is within easy access to other coastal and inland towns. It is only 8 Kms from the AP7 motorway linking this area to the rest of Spain.

El Sequer is fully equipped with all that one needs for a perfect holiday, while offering complete privacy and exceptional views over the countryside. Its private pool, garden and ecological fruit orchard, where our guests can pick seasonal fruit are a haven in itself. Located at the back of the village, it is only a 2 mins walk to the village centre with its traditional bakery ( with wood fired oven), local grocery store, bar/ restaurant, chemist & health centre . The magnificent Segaria mountain range rises up behind the cottage where a walking route offers you views from the summit as far as your eyes can see! (even the island of Ibiza on clear days): Beautiful sand dune beaches are only a 10 mins car ride away and the bustling and cosmopolitan town of Denia is only 15 Kms away. For 'gastronomy lovers', there is a wide range of local and international restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets!. Within a close radio are walking a& cycling routes, golf courses, nature reserves rich in birdlife, prehistoric caves, nautical sports, etc etc. and of course throughout the year, typical local fiestas are celebrated which are an essential part of Spanish life!.

We have strived to make El Sequer your 'home away from home' and hope you will visit us some day!

Perfect rural villa - perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of 4 (two children aged 11 and 9). This was our first holiday on the Costa Blanca. We feel very incredibly lucky to have selected El Sequer as our villa for two weeks in August 2013. Jenny & Os were the best owners ever. Very friendly, very helpful, with lots of great advice for trips and the local fiestas which were happening throughout the small towns in the Orba Valley.

The villa is a beautiful tranquil place to be, with a lovely view over the valley. It was very quiet (except for when a fiesta was on at a nearby town!) and private, so relaxation was easy! I liked the fact that it was a small compact villa - it was very clean, well maintained and cared for. Lots of attention to detail, furnishings, fresh flowers in every room. Very generous arrival essentials including water, wine, drinks for the children. Fresh bread and divine cake from the local baker. Jenny & Os really put lots of effort & thought into making your stay as perfect as possible.

It's set at the back of a quiet traditional Spanish small village, with a baker (fresh warm bread every morning!) and village square with a bar (with wi-fi) and a large municipal pool. Driving through the narrow streets is a little daunting at first, but soon got used to it. The villa has it's own garden with lots of trees growing a variety of fruit, which we were encouraged to pick and enjoy. The pool & shower area were very clean (Thanks Os!) and child friendly, our children loved the pool. Kitchen is small, but didn't stop us having lots of great evenings in & cooking up some Spanish cuisine. The BBQ came in handy too. Compact dishwasher was very useful. Washing machine was a bonus. Internet was via a dongle, which was adequate for our needs.

As for things to do, we were spoilt for choice. Recommend Quadalest, old village built on top of rugged mountains, Fonts d'Algar - although very busy in August, Altea - the old part of the town, Moraira - unspoilt seaside town, plus great beaches at Denia. La Mena restaurant a definite must - you have to book - we got a table next to the sea and watched the sunset & the boats go by.

Our last night was spent enjoying the Moors and Christians parade in Denia and it was a spectacular event.

Overall, highly recommended. Peaceful, charming, relaxing, but close to the beach & the restaurants in Denia. Perfect!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for this glowing review of our holiday cottage and the area. We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay and were able to see many of the sights and events taking place during your holiday. We have put a lot of effort into making El Sequer a true "home away from home" and it is always a pleasure when our guests feel that way. It was a pleasure for us to meet you too and hope you will return in the future.

El Sequer Benimeli - the perfect stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a magical holiday at El Sequer and could not recommend it more highly. It sits above a quiet, ancient village full of character where there's a bakery, village shop both of which will cook special dishes to order, a village bar fronting a square that has free wi-fi, so you can be self-sufficient. We used the bikes available to pedal through the traffic free citrus groves to other village bars for lunch. El Sequer has an attractive little garden overlooking mountain ranges beyond the valley of orange growers. It's a stunning view. We were there in January and February and were able to have meals outside most days. The cottage is full of character. Jenny and Os the owners make sure you have everything you need and are really helpful in suggesting things to do. And there's masses available. The coast is about 10 miles away - Denia and Javea are well established ports and the freshest fish and huge markets are at hand. We've never had a better holiday and can't wait to go back next year

Ideal -holiday home - mountains + the med

  • 5 of 5

This was a fantastic venue for a complete break away from the rush and madness of working life.

It is situated at the foot of walkable hills, within driving distance of the mediterranean and will numerous countryside for cycling. A true escape to the country. I almost forgot to mention the orange groves which provided fresh and delicious fruit direct from the tree to the hammock.

The cottage provided all the comforts and delights that we could possibly need. The village of Benimeli was so delightful. Old buildings, markets, churches, a stone bakery and the friendliest of people.

There was a lot to see and do or not. Just being there was enough for the king and queen in us.

A perfect holiday desination

  • 5 of 5

El Sequer is an idyllic spot for a real taste of Spain. It sits amidst groves of oranges, lemons and grapefruit with superb mountain views all around and, in springtime, almond blossom everywhere.

The house has everything that one could wish for in comfort and attention to detail. The owners, Jenny and Oswaldo, take trmendous trouble to ensure that guests feel welcomed and feel comfortable from the moment they arrive. To have meals on the terrace with bread from the village baker and oranges straight off the trees in the garden adds hugely to the relaxing holiday atmosphere.

The seaside towns of Denia and Javea are a convenient drive away and offer plenty of interest - historical and gastronomic. The nearby village is within easy walking distance and provides daily essentials.

There are numerous walks in the area and the scenery, even from the lower levels is stunning. Small 'white' Spanish villages are scattered all over the area and add greatly to appreciation of the 'real' Spain.

El Sequer - our best rental experience ever

  • 5 of 5

El Sequer is the perfect setting for a cottage, nestling in mountains and over looking a valley of orchards and another mountain range as a backdrop. We picked oranges and lemons from its garden where we took most of our meals, and strolled down through narrow streets to the excellent village baker for our bread. There's also a grocer's, an inn and a weekly market. El Sequer is situated on the edge of an ancient Moorish village, its highest dwelling overlooking rooftops of character and a church tower that's lit up at night. The garden, too, is attractively lit ideal for those BBQ suppers outside. It's very peaceful. The village is remarkably quiet and the cottage itself has considerable character, is well equipped and comfortable with a very spacious living room. It is spotlessly clean and we found the description in the guide exactly as stated.

We are keen walkers and there are many opportunities in the area for this. One spectacular walk is climbing to the Iberian settlement (BC) behind the cottage. We discovered many others in both coastal and mountain regions.

Nearby Denia and Javea are an attractive ports offering plenty of eating places. Along this stretch of the coast there are plenty of beaches.

Jenny and Oswaldo, the owners, are keen to research any interests and offer advice. They are attentive to their guests, something appreciated according to the visitors' book by everyone who has stayed there.

So you can see, for us, El Sequer is a wonderful experience - so wonderful that we return regularly. There's no where quite like it. We recommend it enthusiastically to our friends.
