|Minimum Stay||6 - 7 nights|
Pure escapism. Set in over 1 acre of wooded garden, backing onto Forestry Commission Woodland. BBC series Monarch of the Glen was filmed in the immediate vicinity. The property is situated in the quiet hamlet of Drumguish, up in the hills three miles from Kingussie (capital of Badenoch). Your journey to the house will take you past the remains of Ruthven Barracks, and over a stone bridge spanning the picturesque River Tromie.
An ideal base for exploring the many castles and historic monuments in the vicinity. Distilleries listed on the famous Whisky Trail are easily accesible. Nearby Kingussie has the River Spey running through it, and boasts a challenging a challenging golf course, with many others nearby.
The porch which gives the property its name is a large airy space with wonderful panoramic views. Lots of storage and a comfy chair from which to view the mountains in the distance and the birdlife close up. Carpeted and double glazed throughout. The house is heated by modern storage radiators and an open fire, ensuring a high degree of comfort what ever the weather.
Abundant wildlife, red squirrels, rabbits and if you get up early enough roe deer in the garden! Delightful walks for all ages and abilities. Wonderful feeling of isolation, yet all amenities nearby.
The property's location is exceptional, surrounded by natural mature pine trees with tracks radiating out in all directions for good walking and cycling. You are immediately aware of the beauty and the peace of the surrounding countryside in every season. You feel a sense of space and privacy that is quite restorative. The house is well-equipped and has an amazing range of books to read for less clement days in front of the log fire. The main room is comfortable with an expansive window to watch squirrels tree-hop. The small town of Kingussie is only three miles away and has all the basic services that might be needed for your holiday. I frequently revisit the Silverfiord Hotel in Kingussie for bar meals which never disappoint. But the house is in easy reach of all Speyside's tourist attractions, and is ideally situated for an active outdoor holiday. The owner is extremely helpful and facilitates that genuine get-away-from-it-all holiday.
We had a wonderful week in this cottage. We loved the location, surrounded by trees. It was very peaceful, with lovely walks straight from the door. There is lots to do in the area and we wished we could have stayed longer.
The house is cosy and very well-equipped. It was all very clean and we were pleased to be some of the first guests to use the new dishwasher! I hope we will visit again soon.
The cottage was very comfortable, the location was great for exploring the Cairngorm's with leisurely walks from the cottage door, or more demanding walks for the adventurous. We had great weather all week and visits from the squirells on a daily basis, a very enjoyable time had by us all. Would book this cottage again and probably will.
We stayed two weeks in Porch House with our 3 boys (aged 8-13). The cottage provides enough space and the porch is very handy for putting your boots and stuff after walking. Enough space for the 5 of us, the boys loved the television in bedrooms.
Best thing about the cottage is the setting and location. From Inverness to Fort William is within reach (1-1,5 hr drive for us) so you can visit a good part of the Highlands. You can start walking from the cottage and have great wood paths nearby. I saw deer each time and once a fox on my solo runs.
The midgets were the only real downside, bring good repellant or hope for less warm weather than we had. The squirrels in the garden offered good compensation though. But buy nuts, not bird seed if you want to see them.
What a wonderful place is Porch House! We loved our stay here - very quiet and peaceful with a wonderful forest to explore on our doorstep. Great for kids as well. A great selection of books and games for all the family. We did have to wash pretty much everything in the kitchen before we could use it but it was otherwise well stocked. The rest of the house was perfectly clean. Loved the log fire in the cool Scottish autumn. Well located for accessing the sights of the central highlands.
The property is very good location, surrounded by nature with beautiful view from the windows. The house is very big, and so quiet around.
