Overview

Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday farmhouse in Monterchi - Casa Fontemaggio

4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, sleeps 8

Fontemaggio is a 17th century stone farmhouse villa or 'Casa Colonica' on a hillside, surrounded by 2 acres of mature landscaped gardens that merge into the sunflowers, vines, olives, pine and cypress trees beyond. There are terraces on all sides, each with its own dining table and breathtaking views of a landscape that seems to have changed little throughout the centuries, including a lake and a Renaissance castle on a hill. Sympathetically restored, the house retains a wealth of terracotta floors and chestnut beams. The 30 ft diameter circular pool, surrounded by fragrant rosemary hedging and lemon trees, benefits from the sun for the entire day. Set amongst mature pines, cypress and olives, it enjoys tranquil views of the Tuscan and Umbrian hills in complete seclusion. The medieval hilltop village of Monterchi, featured in 'The Most Beautiful Villages in Tuscany', is close by. You will find Casa Fontemaggio a blissfully relaxing home from home in which to enjoy the pleasures of Italian life.

The gardens: the gardens and grounds have been professionally landscaped and contain planting typical of Tuscany. Trees include some very old pines and almonds, cypresses, olives, acacias, oaks, figs and lemons in terracotta pots. There are box, lavender and rosemary hedges. The terraces have pergolas covered in vines, wisteria, Chilean bell-flowers and roses climb on the house walls. A wisteria entwined tiled loggia provides a shady retreat and alternative place to dine. The tranquil sound of running water is provided by a fountain.

Situation: although private and peaceful, is not remote. It is well placed to either luxuriate in the excellent cuisine and wines of the region or take trips to the historical and cultural sites of both Tuscany and Umbria. The timeless hill top village of Lippiano, crowned by the castle that can be viewed from Fontemaggio, may be walked to for breakfast or a drink at the friendly bar.

3 km away, the local hilltop walled village of Monterchi, a tiny triangle of medieval perfection, with its intriguing arches and alleyways, is Roman in origin. It is the birthplace of the mother of the famous Renaissance artist Piero della Francesca. His fresco the Madonna del Parto, of UNESCO World Heritage status, can be seen in the old schoolhouse museum. The landscape that appears in Piero's works is clearly recognisable in the views around Fontemaggio.

You will find the local community in Monterchi welcoming and friendly, particularly at the general store run by Marcello and his family. There are bars and good restaurants serving local specialities.

There is a market on Sunday mornings and in the summer there are outdoor classical concerts.

Florence, Siena, Cortona, Arezzo, Assisi, Perugia, Gubbio are all within easy reach.

A blissful stay at Casa Fontemaggio

  • 5 of 5

Tucked away on the border with Umbria near the Tuscan village of Monterchi, this beautiful seventeenth century farmhouse provided the perfect location for our holiday. We are a family of five who travelled from Australia to spend time with UK-based grandparents and other family members. Months before we had spent many hours online researching potential villas in Italy and were very taken with what Casa Fontemaggio had to offer. The already high expectations we had from the photos on the website were totally surpassed. The photos actually don't do it justice. From the jaw-dropping views from the terrace where we spent many memorable meals, to the simply sublime circular pool fringed by cypress trees, lavender and geraniums; it is all just achingly beautiful. The house itself is very comfortable, well-equipped, tastefully furnished and filled with interesting art pieces and books . An added bonus is that the hosts, who live in the neighbouring barn, are very friendly and extremely helpful. We shared a few proseccos with Sylvia and Martin (and dog Beppo!) on the terrace and cannot speak highly enough about them; genuinely warm, lovely and interesting people. They are there if you need anything but their presence is in no way intrusive if you value your privacy. The situation of the house itself is idyllic; surrounded by rolling Tuscan hills and fields carpeted with sunflowers. We had elderly grandparents aged over 80 in our party so didn’t venture as far afield as we might have done if it was just immediate family. However there are plenty of charming villages to visit locally; Anghiari, San Sepolcro, Citerna, and the beautiful city of Arezzo. A day trip into Florence is easy, only 50 minutes by train. If you stay, make sure you take advantage of the two-day roasted suckling pig sold on a Tuesday at Marcello’s in the local village - it was probably one of the best meals we had. There are plenty of good eating out options, our favourites were the Belvedere restaurant in Citerna and La Pieve Vecchia just outside Monterchi. We will always treasure the memories of our fantastic stay at Casa Fontemaggio and hope to return one day. The Cotton family, Sydney, Australia.

Owner's Response: It was a real pleasure having this warm and friendly extended family, aged from 8 to 80, at Casa Fontemaggio. They truly appreciated how special the property, the surrounding landscape and the local area are and this comes across so clearly in their review. Our favourite quote was from 8 year old Ella: "There's only one thing wrong with this place - it's too nice"!

Stunning home just outside of a beautiful, little village

  • 5 of 5

The pictures are beautiful and the reality is even better! When Martin and Sylvia first walked us around the property when we arrived, we were stunned by the beauty of the grounds. There is beautiful landscaping at every turn and a seemingly endless number of places to sit outside and enjoy the surroundings. The pool is a calm oasis (which is much bigger than it looks) with comfortable lounge chairs and plenty of shade to get a break from the Tuscan summer sun.

The inside of the restored farmhouse oozes charm. The exposed ceilings and low doorways remind you of the history of the home, but the kitchen and beautifully remodeled bathrooms are completely modern (the great water pressure in the showers was a nice surprise!) Our bedroom had stunning views all around, even from the bathroom! There isn't AC but the large bedroom fans kept us pretty cool and comfortable at night.

Sylvia and Martin stayed in the tobacco house next door which was handy to ask them questions and advice, but they were never obtrusive and when we wanted privacy, we hardly knew they were there. We hired Cinzia and Luciano one night to cook dinner and, as others have stated, it was one of the best meals we had in 2 weeks in Italy and was a wonderful splurge.

In Monterchi, you truly feel like you are a resident of Italy. The little hill town is picturesque and nearby Anghiari was one of our favorites. We ate twice at the nearby La Pieve Vecchia, which seemed to be a favorite of local Italians, and when we visited, the restaurant was surrounded by gorgeous fields of sunflowers. Marcello's little market (5 minutes from the house) has great salami, cheese, pesto, all the basics and lots of wine. The family doesn't speak much English but are so gracious and helpful. We took a wine tasting day tour to Chianti with Very Tuscany tours (also available to other wine regions) which I recommend as well. We travelled around quite a bit, and found the area around Monterchi to be one of the most beautiful that we saw. It is a calm, farming area but still close enough to take day trips to hill towns all around the area.

I can't say enough good things about Casa Fontemaggio. We loved our weeklong stay there and were very sad to leave.

Owner's Response: It was a delight to receive such an appreciative review so soon after the long haul flight home to America for Yvonne, her husband and teenage girls. The detailed account of what they had enjoyed about their stay was a pleasure to read and confirmed what we love about Casa Fontemaggio, the local area and what it has to offer both residents and visitors.

Wonderful second stay at Casa Fontemaggio

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd visit to Monterchi and Casa Fontemaggio. We were truly lucky to be able to stay at this magnificent home again. We were here in 2012 celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary with friends. This time we came with the same friends and their two teenage sons. Friends from Belgium also joined us in the evenings for many wonderful dinners at this beautiful property. They were able to stay within walking distance of us.

I cannot say enough positive things about this home. The bathrooms have been remodeled since we were here in 2012 and they are nicely done. The upstairs bathrooms are absolutely beautiful. This home easily sleeps 6 people without any problems and I'm sure 8 people would fit just as nicely. Each couple had their own private room and bathroom and the teenager's each had their own beautiful bedroom and they shared a bathroom.

We cooked in almost every evening and enjoyed the amazing views while we dined on the terrace or ate inside by the fireplace in the dining room.

The gardens, terraces and pool are absolutely breathtaking. I spent many mornings by the pool taking in the views after enjoying a lovely early-morning walk each day.

The town of Monterchi has a grocery store with friendly people that genuinely try and help you even if you do not speak Italian very well. There are so many small towns within a short drive of this property and within 30 to 60 minutes you can visit some of the most beautiful hill towns in Tuscany and Umbria. Sylvia provides a guide with many recommended towns nearby.

The owners of Casa Fontemaggio are the nicest people and we truly enjoyed spending time with them during the stay. I happen to ask Sylvia about walking in the area and she invited us on a lovely walking tour that was organized by locals in the area. We were also able to enjoy dinner with them during our stay.

One thing I would highly recommend is hiring Cinzia to cook a meal for you and your family or guests while you're staying in this home. We did this in 2012 and also this trip. The food is absolutely fantastic and everything is made from scratch.

The Wi-Fi works well and you can even get work done by the pool if needed. The home has a washing machine. There is plenty of space inside and outside to spend together or find privacy. The kitchen is a joy to cook in.

Thank you Sylvia, Martin and Beppo for allowing vacationers to be able to live like an Italian in a breathtaking area =)

Owner's Response: We are touched that Leslie and Scott were so delighted by their second stay at Fontemaggio, that they took the trouble to express their thoughts in writing. As these guests regularly stay in holiday rental properties around the world, it is a privilege to know that they and their friends really appreciate the special qualities of Fontemaggio and the surrounding area. Thank you - we truly look forward to welcoming you back!

Paradise in Tuscany

Paradise in Tuscany

This property is exceptional and well exceeded our high expectations. We have stayed in several Tuscan properties, at a similar rental rate, and this is, without doubt, the best. The web site photos, good as they are, can not capture the wow factor of this house. Staying at Fontemaggio is like having a boutique hotel all to yourselves. The spacious property is a stylish blend of contemporary and vintage furniture. Each of the three master bedrooms was comfortable and tastefully decorated. The bathrooms are superb - better than any luxury hotel I have stayed in. The kitchen worked really well. It is thoughtfully equipped and has a well designed layout, with a big central marble topped island which was great for shared cooking and wine tasting! The circular pool is much bigger than we expected and the whole pool area is enchanting – well furnished, beautifully planted, wonderful scents and views to hills, olive groves and castles. We loved hanging out on the big dining terrace with its cinematic view to the castle of Lippiano. We also appreciated the deep shade of the loggia for lunchtimes. The location is perfect, in the middle of the peaceful countryside , surrounded by sunflowers, yet only minutes away from the village. It is also ideally located for easy travel to the main attractions in Tuscany, Umbria and the Marches. We even took the train from Arezzo to Rome for the day. Sylvia’s recommendations were the perfect guidebook and made sure we did not overlook the many local gems. There are a range of great restaurants around Monterchi and each meal was a memorable pleasure.

We are dreaming of our return to this Tuscan paradise..........

Owner's Response: Thank you Juliet and David for your generous comments. I am delighted that this happy group of guests so appreciated what a stay at Fontemaggio has to offer. I understand how important holidays are and it is so satisfying that, yet again, Fontemaggio and the local area have given so much pleasure. The title 'Paradise in Tuscany' perfectly sums up how we feel.

Expectations exceeded!

  • 5 of 5

Our week at the villa will go down as a truly remarkable visit to a beautiful part of the world in a magical villa. The property was beautifully situated in the Tuscan hillside, ideal for day trips to charming hilltop towns and perfect for long walks in a lovely landscape. The villa was both comfortable yet rustically elegant. Just what we had hoped to find in Tuscany! Whether it was coffee or wine on the terrace, or breakfast on the high patio, the views were serene and beautifully pastoral. Sylvia and Martin were lovely, attentive and gracious hosts. They provided plenty of useful information about day trips, local restaurants and tips about navigating the road and rails. Certainly, one of the trip's highlights was the local chef Sylvia arranged to make a delicious dinner for our group of six. Homemade ravioli, delicious duck, local greens and a homemade fruit tart for dessert made it a wonderful way to ease into our vacation. The villa was everything we possibly could have hoped for. The attention to detail throughout villa certainly captured a feel for all that is Tuscan. Sylvia made us feel welcome and treated us like friends. We have and will recommend Casa Fontemaggio to all our friends. Ciao!

Owner's Response: It was a pleasure to welcome Lynn and Bruce and their friends. They were really 'simpatico' to what makes Fontemaggio so special and made full use of what the property and location have to offer. I am delighted they felt their stay was authentically Tuscan. I particularly like the word 'magical' - an adjective many guests have used to describe their stay at Fontemaggio.
