We visited baton rouge from March 11 through the 17th.... we had great communication from the owner leading up to our stay and clear directions the day before our stay on how to get into the home. The house was just as advertised. We were very pleased with everything about the rental and enjoyed our stay.
Shabby neighborhood. We left.
I have used VRBO multiple times over the years and—until now—have always been pleased.
This property was in a neighborhood which my nineteen-year-old daughter referred to as “sketchy”. The exterior of the property was not in good repair. There was someone’s boat parked in—what should have been—the property’s off street parking spot, which was a metal carport that looked like it had seen better days. We did go inside the property. The rooms were as they appeared online and looked to have been recently vacuumed. However, we only stayed long enough to secure a reservation at a local hotel. We would not have felt safe returning here after dark. I should have suspected something was wrong when I had to contact the property manager the morning of our arrival to obtain the door code. In the past, the entry code has always been sent promptly by property owner/Manager at other rentals through VRBO.
I have to say this has shaken my confidence in booking private properties as accommodations for my family.
I could not recommend this property for families.
Confusing, not the house we booked
We have used VRBO for many vacations, and have always been extremely satisfied; however, this trip was a total disaster for us.
1. We did not receive any information on the home and had to call in twice to receive the welcome packet on how to get in, the address, etc. We finally received this less than 24 hours before we arrived.
2. We were told that the house we searched for and booked had the previous renter extending their stay, so we would have a different home. Again, we wouldn't have found this out if we hadn't been persistent on getting the welcome packet. Because I was travelling with an 88-year old man, this was concerning as we did not know the layout of the new home with stairs, bedrooms, etc. We spent a lot of time trying to find a home appropriate for his needs, so this was disconcerting and was a waste of our time.
3. The house itself was clean and nicely decorated, but had a bit of shabbiness like a college apartment with caulking issues here and there, but overall, for the price, was fine for our needs.
4. The house is a duplex, and this wouldn't have been a problem except for the neighbors next door played loud music full boogie tilt most of night and were nocturnal with people constantly going in and out. Our intent with this house rental was for sleeping after spending Christmas vacation with family at another location. Therefore, lack of sleep from all the noise was the main issue besides the lack of information noted earlier...we were very tired from lack of sleep, and of course, were a bit "cranky" at our holiday gathering.
5.We would not rent from this particular group with their several homes in this neighborhood as we wouldn't know exactly what we get as it changed for us this time, and wasn't a pleasant experience.
When calling VRBO main number, they were very kind and helpful, but were not aware of the house change, so perhaps this is more of a local Baton Rouge issue with property managers and administration. However, at the end of the day, we book through VRBO, and this was our experience.
Nice for Family
Pros: This home was nice in a quiet neighborhood. We loved it and would love to stay again. It was close to everything.
Cons: Because we were on the far side it wasn't convenient for us to use the driveway, although it was occupied by vehicles and a boat.We tried to leave it as tidy as possible but there were no other check out instructions besides empty the trash.
