Drive up one of the few remaining unpaved roads in the area and up the hill to our beautiful home. Positioned on 10 acres on Mt Taurus, feel like you are in a secluded mountain retreat and yet you are only a short walk from the historic village of Cold Spring.
Our dream home comfortably sleeps 7 and up to 9 in a pinch. Wake up to the sunrise and a beautiful view of the Hudson River; the master bedroom, upstairs, has a queen bed and its own full bath.
Downstairs, the guest room has a full bed, its own porch and incredible views of the river. Adjacent to the guest room is family room with a wood burning fireplace, cable TV, a queen sofa bed and a twin bed tucked into its own alcove, perfect for kids.
Going back upstairs, through the 2 story greenhouse, an indoor garden of Eden, one finds the great room. Gaze out through the fully opening accordion windows to Hudson River and Highlands, Constitution Marsh and West Point. With a wood burning fireplace, cable TV and a gourmet kitchen, including Viking range, french door Jennair refrigerator and all the smaller appliances you could need, your vacation will be compete. Above the kitchen is a craft room with a full size futon, in case you need to sleep a couple more.
Back into the greenhouse and this time out the back door, across the bridge and into the secret garden. From there you can hide away, sip some wine, listen to the birds and savor quiet conversation. If you are lucky, you will see a fox or deer coming down the hillside. Downstairs there is a gathering area with a stone barbecue and fire pit where you can relax, enjoy the view including the train in the distance coming into town. There are 2 covered porches where you can sit and rock or eat a great home cooked meal, all while enjoying the cool breezes, sunsets and the incredible moon rise.
A short walk or drive away is Cold Spring, where you can find great restaurants, antique shops, boutiques and art galleries. Our neighbor to the south, Garrison, has many things to offer, including the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival at Boscobel House and Gardens which is a wonderful historic home perfectly situated on the Hudson and well worth a tour; the Cold Spring Farmers Market is held there during the summer months. Also in Garrison is the Philipstown Depot theater sharing live performances, music events and showcasing documentary films.
Our neighbor to the north, Beacon, has the world class Dia:Beacon, an ex-cracker factory lovingly converted into a museum. They have a very long Main St with incredible shops, galleries and restaurants.
If nature is what you crave, you are just steps from the Undercliff Trail up Mt Taurus, sometimes called Bull Hill. This leads up to the Hudson Highlands State Park and the famed Breakneck Ridge with panoramic views of the Hudson River Valley. Clarence Fahnstock Memorial State Park is a short drive up RT 301, with boating, fishing and more hiking. The Appalachian Trail runs through the Hudson Highlands as well. You can kayak to Bannerman island to see the castle, to Constitution Island or the Audobon Society's Constitution Marsh.
Stephen and I are travel maniacs. We go anywhere, anytime we can get the money and time to do it. We have always taken our son, now 25, with us and still do, when we can. You can see our travels reflected in much of the design of our home as well as in the decor. We wanted a house that looked like it belonged here, but had many of the elements we have seen on our travels.
So we have the stone of Croatia, the arches of Rome, the doors of ancient Goa and Afghanistan, all perched over the Hudson River. We added lots of big windows to take it all in. We love to watch the sky, it changes all the time and from our perch you get a big view of it.
We love nature, so we settled here in the middle of it and brought it indoors. Try a bath in the middle of a snow storm, nothing like it! Or take a deep breath in the greenhouse, anytime, but especially in April, when the lemon is in bloom. Then watch as the petals slowly fall to the ground and the baby lemons are right there! Tiny little green lemons, which slowly grow until about December, when they are ready to start using.
When we built the house, we put the bridge across to what is now the secret garden, but at the time, there was nothing over there but a mossy area where foxes and deer passed by and sometimes had a little respite. We use it for the same purpose!
Nature, travel, relaxation, good food and drink and good friends and family, which includes dogs, that's what we are about! We are happy to share some small portion of that with you while you are here.
Ricann Bock purchased this house in 2008
How does that saying go? Oh yes, locate, location location. That's why this property. Close to NYC, only a short train ride. Walking distance to the train or only a short drive. We often go into the city for dinner or a show.
Walk into Cold Spring for dinner and shopping. First Fridays the galleries have openings and many of the shops and restaurants are open and often have specials. Or visit the Bazaar On Hudson on summer Sundays to buy goods from local makers and artists.
Or you can drive into Garrison or Beacon, our neighbors to the north and south. Museums, galleries, theaters, more restaurants, historic sites and more.
Are you a localvore? Cold Spring and Beacon both have farmers markets. Glynwood Farm is just a short ride up 301. The Cold Spring General Store has local produce, cheeses and more, right on Main St. And we have just the kitchen to cook it all up in!
Close to nature, we love nature. We have surrounded ourselves and our home with nature here. From the greenhouse as the core of our home, to the secret garden in back, to the proximity to hiking we have nature and all 4 seasons as well.
We love being able to just walk down the driveway and into the woods for a hike with our dogs. And it doesn't matter the weather. We go in 5 degree weather, 100 degree weather, foot deep snow (or deeper!), brilliant sunshine and even in the rain, although thats not my favorite. The Hudson Valley has it all! And our home is in middle of one of the most beautiful parts, the Hudson Highlands.
Such great hiking here. Bull Hill or Mt Taurus, use either name and its still our perch, our jumping off point to hiking in the Hudson Highlands. Pretty soon you'll be able to hike or bike from Cold Spring to Beacon along the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail.
The Hudson River provides not only great views from the house, but you can walk to its banks and see it up close. You can also kayak, boat and see some of the historic site located all along the Hudson for the water.
Stephen is from South Africa and I'm an air force brat, so moving is in our blood. We have lived in many different states, sometimes for as short as 2 years, but THIS is our home! We built this house with the help of a wonderful architect and builder. It is our dream home and we think you'll agree that we fell into a pot of honey when we landed here.
One of the many ideas and things we incorporated into our home is the door leading into the master bedroom was purchased in Santa Fe, although its origins go back to Afghanistan. We drove it, along with a few other treasures, in a Uhaul truck from New Mexico all the way to New York so our builder could incorporate it into our home. You can see the matching pair used as cabinet doors in the kitchen.
Speaking of the kitchen, the rest of the wood is reclaimed barn wood, so beautiful. Our building was so insistent that we use barn wood, despite our protests that we could not afford it, that he gave a bargain price. He is an old world craftsman and loves working with reclaimed materials. He designed and built the fireplace wall and our only input was "big, bold, beam". What a great collaboration!
The other really great thing about our home is the positioning, the view and all the nature that is in and around it. Nature was incorporated so dearly into our home by our architect who has traveled and hiked all over the world. When he first came up to see the site, he scrambled up the rocky hill side to see the view from up higher. Thats when we knew he was the one for us! That is why the main living space and master suit are upstairs, to take advantage of the view, which is not really possible to capture in photos.
The greenhouse in-between the 2 buildings was also his idea. I watched as it appeared before my eyes as he drew it on a napkin! Fantastic! Nature INSIDE! We think it makes our home very unique!
This home is wonderful. The design maximizes the most fantastic views of the Hudson River, West Point and the beautiful hills of the Hudson Valley. A totally peaceful place to stay while in Cold Spring for our son's wedding.
The interior of this lovely home includes the most amazing 2 story greenhouse with lush plantings. The house has every amenity that we could need, is spotless and the local caretaker and owner were so responsive to any question we had at check-in. There is nothing more we could hope for in a vacation home and we cannot wait to come back again for another stay at this home in the beautiful Hudson Valley. Thank you thank you.
Absolutely stunning yet comfortable. Well located for a wide variety of wonderful activities ... especially West Point. Very helpful, friendly owners. Can't wait for our next visit. We enjoyed the spacious rooms and various areas perfect for some privacy when wanted. Perfect for more than one couple or large family.
Our second visit was as impressive as the first. This beautiful home has it all inside and out. Beauty, comfort and restful. We also appreciate its close proximity to grocery store and downtown Cold Spring. Will not disappoint. We are coming back!!!
We arrived on a Friday afternoon--three sisters and a newly minted adult daughter--to Ricann's stunning home!
The views!! The house!! The property is just as described-- actually, even better-- if that is possible! We explored every room and every view before heading out to dinner in nearby Beacon. Each day we were torn between just relaxing at the house and exploring the nearby towns. We shopped, ate wonderful meals, visited an art fair and the Dia museum. We even managed to spend a morning at a nearby spa. Ricann was very easy to communicate with-- from beginning to end! She emailed the house instruction book ahead of time which gave us thorough instructions and lots of recommendations. The house was very clean and very comfortable! The kitchen was well equipped and we enjoyed morning coffee, tea and evening wine and snacks. From the inside rooms, beautiful greenhouse to the outside sitting areas-- every inch of the house was admired and enjoyed! We had a lovely weekend, spent wonderful time together and are now checking our calendars to see when we can return!!
This is the second (and definitely not the last) visit to this beautiful property. The owners have taken great care of this sanctuary. Just outside of Cold Spring with a beautiful view of the Hudson River and West Point, it has been the perfect place for us to stay when we visit our son who is attending West Point. It is set on the hillside so you feel like you are far away from everything when in actuality, you are just a short drive (or walk) from Cold Spring and 25 minutes from West Point. Thank you for sharing this beautiful home for us to enjoy with our family!
The house is beautiful, and both the house and property are well maintained. Ricann contacted us prior to our stay, and she was available to answer questions during our stay. The kitchen was well stocked, and we enjoyed preparing meals here! We would happily spend a relaxing week here again.
