Overview

About the property

Labor Day Weekend just opened up. My last open days of the summer. Sat. Sept. 2, Sun. Sept. 3 and Mon. Sept. 4

Please make sure to read the wonderful reviews from my three summers of guests. My schedule does not allow me enough time to enjoy Lummi Island, I'm so happy to be able to share the experience with others. Welcome to one of the best kept secrets in the San Juan Islands.

Enjoy the view via my two story A-frame window that looks out upon Mt. Baker and Bellingham Bay in this cosy 1 bedroom cabin and with loft. The large deck invites to you to spend time outdoors and BBQ your nightly meals as you enjoy the view. Located on the South end of Lummi Island about 4 miles from the ferry landing in the Scenic Estates you are high up on the mountain which offers the spectacular views. Great for a romantic get away with NO PHONE, NO INTERNET and NO CABLE to distract you from pure relaxation. (there is good cell reception and VCR/DVD set up in the loft with an eclectic supply of movies to choose from.)

Lummi Island offers dining at the Beach Store Café and shopping at the Islander Market (with free wifi access). The Lummi Congregational Church offers beach access for a stroll overlooking the SW end of the island towards Orcas Island. Easy access to Bellingham via the 7 minute ferry ride to the mainland which makes on average two runs per hour up until Midnight.

While you may have plans on the island, once you find yourself sitting on the deck and overlooking Hales Passage, Portage Island, Bellingham Bay, Bellingham and Mt. Baker - you will find it nearly impossible to do anything else. Luckily, the BBQ is on the deck, so you can cook meals while enjoying the view and the variety of birds surrounding you.

Bird watching from the house is a favorite past time - and very easy to spend way too much time doing this. Hummingbirds abound until mid-August and some now stay year round. There are plenty of gold finch and other birds. Summer of 2016 had a pair of bald eagles that circle overhead in the late afternoons. Additionally, deer, raccoons and chipmunks are regular visitors to the house. Even though you may feel worlds away from it all, there is never a lack of activity to gaze upon.

About Erik Birkeland

I work in the theatre business and have my primary home in Seattle

Erik Birkeland purchased this cabin in 1998

Why Erik Birkeland chose San Juan Islands

I grew up in Ferndale with a view of Mt. Baker. The moment I stepped foot onto this property in 1998, I knew I had found one of the most special places on earth and with my Mt. Baker view.

What makes this cabin unique

Incredible view and surrounded by nature.

While the neighbor houses are close by, they are set back and you only notice them when parking the car. Once you're in the house and on the deck, you can have the feeling of having the entire island to yourself.

An amazing honeymoon getaway!

  • 5 of 5

This house on Lummi Island exceeded our expectations! My husband and I stayed for 11 nights for our honeymoon, and it was fantastic. The view of the lovely Mt. Baker is unparalleled (as another reviewer said, you could just look out at it all day), and the setting of the house (nestled in the trees) gives you the feeling of being one with nature. Between exploring the island (and partaking in the delicious cuisine offered at the restaurants- and there's a winery, too!), taking daytrips to Bellingham and the Northern Cascades, and even to Seattle (the ferry ride to and from the island is short and easy)...we could not have asked for more. The house itself is beautiful, and so homey-feeling! Erik is a wonderful host, and gave us great suggestions things to do during our stay. It's a very welcoming place, and a lovely island. Thanks a bunch, Erik!

Very nice weekend

  • 5 of 5

We had a great relaxing weekend on Lummi Island at Erik's property! It's exactly as advertised clean, well maintained, set up perfectly for out of town guests and with a great view to top it all off! Erik even baked us some fresh cookies for our arrival. We will definitely keep this place in mind for future long weekends.

Thanks Erik!

Owner's Response: Thank you Charles and Sheila- so wonderful to have you here on Lummi Island and I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. Upon my return to the cabin - I felt like I was the guest - thanks for leaving it so spotless. Not required, but greatly appreciated. And - a warning to future guests....I can't guarantee fresh cookies upon arrival - Just good timing, as I had to satisfy my sweet tooth as I was cleaning the cabin before their arrival and they were the beneficiaries of that batch of cookies.

A magical retreat

  • 5 of 5

This magical retreat was perfect. The view of Mt Baker appearing and disappearing behind the clouds, throughout the day was spectacular. The hike to the top of the mountain, the serenity, peacefulness, and the birds and deer made this really a unique experience. The cabin is well equipped and Erik's summary of things to do is great. You can look at the view out the window or from the deck all day.

Romantic Island Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely loved our stay! A short ferry crossing will get you to this San Juan Island made up of winding roads and peaceful beaches perfect for walking and bird watching. We arrived on a Artist Studio Tour weekend so had the added pleasure of attending artist open houses during the day.

The cabin is nestled in the treetops with a spectacular view of Bellingham Bay and Mt Baker. Relaxing on the deck enjoying the views while BBQing was heaven for us and in the morning we woke up to bird whistles and beautiful sunrises. There are deer, chipmunks and lots of birds including the resident hummingbirds to watch. When dark we would go to the theater room loft and watch movies. The home was clean and bed quite comfortable. The kitchen had spices and all amenities we needed to prepare our meals. So appreciated the fantastic communication with the owner, Erik, working out our vacation details. Our anniversary celebration could not have been better!

Owner's Response: Thanks Anne, You sure know how to write a review !! I think this sets up the expectations of stay on Lummi Island really well for those folks contemplating a visit. And while I try to leave my place pretty spotless - I appreciate that you left it even cleaner than when you arrived. I've had such wonderful guests over the past 3 summers of renting on VRBO and it just keeps getting better and better. Many thanks for your visit to my little piece of paradise.

Sweet Get Away

  • 5 of 5

If you like peace & quiet, nice views, a compact cabin, and a slow pace, this is the place for you. Erik's cabin is not only well thought out with everything a traveler might need, but also his directions and explanations of how things work are very clear. As a bonus, his artwork is fun and eclectic. We will definitely consider renting again next time we're on Lummi Island.

Owner's Response: Thanks Tanya for your lovely review. I enjoy that others get to enjoy my Lummi Island paradise when I'm not able to be there to enjoy it myself. And, glad you like my collection of art in the cabin. Little pieces of art and special items from China, The Philippines, Argentina, Norway as well as Lummi Island.
