Beautiful and tranquil setting, large garden and pool. Interior a bit dated and lots of flies
The house is in a gorgeous and tranquil setting with lovely views across the garden and valley beyond. There is a lovely big garden with a nice (unheated) pool. There were lots of kids toys available which was perfect for our 2 year old. There were bikes which we used to cycle the pretty local roads (which were quite hilly, but I liked that...!)
The kitchen in the house had everything you needed and all the appliances worked well. There wasnt a lot of space in the kitchen and lots of the rooms were very dark and a bit dingy and the decor was dated. This property is best enjoyed when you want to spend time outside. There were also lots and lots of flies which was a bit annoying sometimes.
There were also a lot of rules and requirements for guests which in other houses we've been to have been done for you such as uncovering the pool, getting all the garden furniture out, cleaning the house etc but as long as you are happy to do that then its not problem.
Overall i would recommend this house.
Thank you very much for your feedback, which is very helpful. We are undertaking significant refurbishments during this winter and we will take your comments into account. We agree with you about the rules for the swimming pool but we have to comply with French Health and Safety Regulations which were introduced in 2006. We are pleased you enjoyed your holiday at Oubax and that you would recommend it to others. We look forward to seeing you again in the Aveyron.
Fantastic house in the beautiful Aveyron
We spent 2 weeks in Oubax & had a wonderful holiday. The house is lovely, very comfortable & certainly has the best equipped kitchen of any rental property I’ve ever stayed in. We didn’t use the TV but it was available with English & French stations & the WiFi was excellent inside & out.
The terrace, garden & pool overlook beautiful countryside which was everchanging during our visit as the farmers harvested their fields.
Although rural, shopping facilities are within easy driving distance, & there are plenty of restaurants to suit all tastes. The area has many great markets selling such fabulous fresh produce that you want to buy everything & take it back to the house & start cooking.
As well as visiting the markets, beautiful bastides & the rivers, it’s a great area for crafts - we visited a number of artisan potters & jewellery makers & watched them at work before buying.
I would highly recommend Les Portails to anyone looking to visit this region of France. It makes an excellent base for exploring but is also perfect for staying put. It’s such a good place to relax, have a swim, cook local produce, drink local wine & eat on the terrace looking out at the countryside. After all of that you sit for hours and stargaze.
Thank you so much for your review. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay.
A great holiday
A lovely quiet holiday home in a very rural area, but within easy reach of restaurants and supermarkets. The Gite had a stunning view of the surrounding countryside, and for most of the time the only sounds were the birds and insects. At night it was quiet and you could sit out watching the stars with no intrusive lights. The accommodation was absolutely fine, with all the facilities you could need, and very comfortable. We ate in and used restaurants in Najac and Villefranche, both only 15 minutes away by car. There is a supermarket only 5 minutes up the road, and Villefranche has everything you could need. We visited some of the cave sites north of here, and also found numerous prehistoric dolmen sites from the maps, and have fallen in love with the Bastides, so this proved to be a brilliant base for our adventures.
Thank you so much, we are delighted you loved our second home and the surrounding area.

Quiet, of the beaten track
We spent two weeks in Oubax and liked it very much. The house is well off the beaten track and surrounded by beautiful countryside. The garden and pool are great and there is more than enough space to park your car and bikes. The kitchen is well equipped but lacks storage space and could do with a bigger bin (you have to separate your waste and have at least two bin bags at the same time but only one small bin). The sitting room upstairs feels a bit dated.
Thelma and John are very nice hosts and were always quick to answer emails. There is a lot to do and see nearby and we managed to rent mountain bikes for the time from the tourist information in Villefranche (delivered to the house).
Great holiday home in the lovely French countryside
We had a lovely holiday. The house is situated amongst very pretty countryside. All facilities in the house were great, including the pool. The house was very clean. Bakery is within five minutes drive, supermarket and another super bakery is 10-15mins drive. Lovely towns and villages to visit. Would recommend.
Thank you so much for taking the time to review our house. We are very pleased that you had an enjoyable holiday and loved the house and surroundings.
Sanvensa is the nearest village two miles away which has a bakers, a bar restaurant, a wine merchant and a hairdressers. La Fouillade is five miles away and has an excellent bakers, two bars, a butcher, a general store and a new Intermarche supermarket. In July and August La Fouillade has a small Saturday market for local producers of food and wine.
Villefranche de Rouergue is eight miles away. It is a ‘Bastide Royale’ or fortified town built by Alphonse de Poitiers during the hundred years war. The centre has a wide selection of traditional shops and the unmissable Thursday market in Place Notre Dame. Local people and tourists alike flock into town to buy local produce or just to absorb the wonderful atmosphere. There are also three hypermarkets as well as other out of town large shops.
The local wines are Cahors, Gaillac and Marcillac as well as other smaller producers. There are many restaurants in Villefranche as well as four in Najac and one in St Andre de Najac less than eight miles away.

About Mr John Durance
We are a retired couple. John was an architect and I was a Head Teacher. We were both born in Peterborough. We met when I was 16 and John was seventeen. We celebrate our Golden Wedding in 2019. We have two married children and four grandchildren. We fell in love with the Aveyron, after spending many holidays in other people's gites in different parts of France. The department remains unspoiled, which is what attracts us year after year. It has been a haven of peace and tranquillity in good times and bad.
Mr John Durance purchased this Farmhouse in 1989
Why Mr John Durance chose Lunac
We fell in love with this cottage the moment we first saw it and although it needed a great deal of loving restoration all the effort and expense has been worthwhile!
