About Joe McDonough

Our family lives in the San Francisco Bay Area in Belmont, CA. Our kids learned to ski at the Mt. Shasta Ski Park. They especially enjoy the little shops in "downtown" McCloud including the White Mountain Cafe and the Candy Store in the Mercantile building.

Joe McDonough purchased this house in 1998

McCloud gem

  • 5 of 5

I and my family very much enjoyed our week in this stylish house. It is in a forested setting, a few minutes drive outside the town of McCloud.

It was a perfect base for day trips throughout the area. McCloud itself is a small and quaint town, with a few cafes, a place to rent kayaks and other outdoor gear, and a museum. We primarily were out on day trips to nearby places like Lake Siskiyou, and the McCloud and upper Sacramento Rivers.

The information from the owner prior to our stay was very thorough, with an accurate description of the property and all necessary details, and email communication was friendly and timely. We would definitely stay here again, and recommend it highly.

Beautiful and Quiet

  • 5 of 5

As it turns out, during our stay, we had one of the rainiest weekends for a long time. So you want a place where you feel really happy to be able to be inside. This is one of those places. The house itself is a little quirky, but not in a distracting way. The main area you see in the pictures is every bit as beautiful as it looks: the living area-kitchen-dining area is one big room. Very sweet and comfie. There were just 2 of us, but the room is arranged that different small groups could be doing their own thing: watching TV or cooking or reading. The house was very clean. It is surrounded by some huge trees and it feels very secluded yet safe. There are homes nearby but they are far enough away you cannot see or notice them. Wonderfully quiet. Nice area to walk your pooch if it is raining too much to go far for a hike - although there is very excellent hiking nearby. And, how can you really beat being at the foot of Mt Shasta?? Even if you can't see it :- }

We rec it and we definitely consider staying again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review. Sorry the weather didn't cooperate. I hope you will come back to the Mt. Shasta area soon. Thank you also for recognizing the excellent cleanliness, comfort, and preparedness of the property. Of course, a lot of work goes into maintaining high standards, and we are very proud of always keeping things that way. In light of the bad weather, please accept a "free day" from our family on your next booking of Shasta Pines. Just remind us of your "free night" when you book. Very Best Wishes,

Mt Shasta great rental

  • 5 of 5

Six guys who have been going fishing at McCloud / Mt Shasta for 30 years moved up from a run down fishing cabin to this very nice home.... what a great decision. The great room/kitchen area is a real comfortable area to all visit during cooking, lounging or prepping for fishing. Sleeping provisions great, and the one that does most of the cooking (me), loved the full kitchen with all the counter space and appliances. I highly recommend this property and we are already booked for a second week next year.

Clean, quiet, comfortable

  • 4 of 5

Shasta Pines is a gem in the laid-back and friendly McCloud area. Homeowner Joe is very responsive and helpful. Big pines surround the house though allow enough open space to view the magnificent stars at night. It is located in a great rural neighborhood, very low-key while accessible to town in just a few minutes. First trip to Shasta and a great spot. Hope to return!

Great house, really nice space

  • 4 of 5

I went with my friends and our dogs for labor day weekend and we loved the house. The bedrooms were good, the living room and kitchen area is big. Our dogs loved the huge outside area they had to play. The entire property is really quiet and private. Our Sunday on the McCloud River Falls was really good, but enjoy it in early morning (like we did) before it gets too crowded. A little far but worth visiting: Lassen Volcanic National Park.

A few could be betters that should NOT stop you from booking: (1) the coffee maker was really slow to make 8 cups, it is a regular 12-cup one but I don't it would make 12 cups without water spilling over the coffee powder/filter compartment. Would be nice to have a better coffee maker. (2) some newer cups, glasses, and bowls would also be really nice.

Lastly: don't me miss the stars! Turn off all the lights and enjoy it.

We stayed for six miserable nights, and considered leaving and going home many times over. The first thing we did upon arrival is go to the bathrooms. I found a live mouse in the bath tub. The bath tub/shower were very dirty and and mold everywhere. i removed the mouse to the outside and set him free. Spent the next few minutes convincing the girls to stay. After the mouse incident we checked the beds. One of the beds had stains on the sheets and one had holes in the blankets and sheets from mice chewing on them. We ended up sleeping in sleeping bags. The cupboards and the oven had mouse droppings in them so we tried to barbecue but that was taken over by hornets. The barbecue was filthy and had to be cleaned and the hornets killed with insecticide we bought in McCloud. At night, when the house would cool down to a balmy 90 degrees (no AC) we could watch the mice moving back and fourth on the kitchen floors. The television did not have a connection to cable or ROCU as stated in the description but we were lucky enough to bring some DVDs. As much as I love the McCloud and Mount Shasta area we were very happy to leave this miserable property but left it cleaner then when we arrived. We informed the owner of our experience and he promised to refund $150.00 of the rent we paid but the check bounced. We do not care about the refund but we want to warn other people of this nasty place!

Owner's Response: I want to start by apologizing to these guests for their difficult six-night stay. The bounced check is new information to me. I will double the refund and send them a new check today... and this check will not bounce. Here are corrective actions that were taken three weeks ago and are now complete: We have hired a new property caretaker service. This new team - a couple - has the highest standards and has completely cleaned the property from top to bottom. Also, and most importantly, we have eliminated the mouse incursion. Now our new caretaker team pre-inspects the property on the day of your arrival to make sure that everything is "up to snuff" and ready for your stay. Again, my sincere apologies to the guests that had this bad experience. A new 2x refund is on its way to them. To new customers considering our fine property: I am offering a SATISFACTION GUARANTEE. If this property is not in spotless condition in all respects call me - the owner - immediately. We will fix whatever problem you have found. We will also refund your entire payment including VRBO fees. And we will let you stay for your entire reservation. In short, your vacation will be on us
