Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Fairbanks - Sunrise Home

3 bedroom 3 bath with Home Theater and Mountain Views Sleeps 4-7 Family Friendly

Stay in the Sunrise Home, a famous eco house, and experience the best in comfort and Alaskan sustainable lodging! The Sunrise Home produces more energy annually than it uses and is the first of its kind in the 49th state. With 3 queen beds, a twin bed, a child bed/crib, and a comfy couch, this custom built high-performance home can comfortably accommodate 4 single adults in beds and one on the couch, plus one young child or up to 3 couples in beds, 1 on the couch and 2 children. Enjoy the spacious open plan on the ground floor with floor to ceiling windows in the living room and sweeping hillside views of the Chena River and Alaska Range beyond. Curl up in the custom home theater with 148 inch front projected screen and fully engineered 9.1 surround sound that will knock your socks off! Cook healthy meals while you visit - the kitchen is fully equipped with a food processor, slow cooker and blender. Lounge and play outside in the large yard, which includes a lawn, sandbox and is surrounded by woods, or go for a hike in the nature trails a few hundred feet up the road. (We regularly see moose, foxes, ermine, and squirrels around the property!) Whether you stay indoors and enjoy the retreat-like atmosphere of the house, or use it as a home base for your Alaskan adventures, you're sure to leave recharged and rejuvenated. Slip a canoe, kayak, or inner tube in the Chena River less 1.5 miles away and float around or paddle a short ways to the Pump House Restaurant. Hop over the University Trails, Equinox Trail, Goldstream trails or Ester Dome for a walk, hike, bike ride or trail run or take a day trip to Pioneer Park, Angel Rocks, Granite Tors, Chena Hot Springs, or the White Mountains.

While our property is very quiet and you barely can see neighbors, we are just a 5 minute drive from grocery store, bank, video store, airport, the University, and very close to the main highway to go into or jet out of town. Whatever you do with your days, you'll sleep soundly in one of 3 spacious bedrooms, each with its own blackout shutters and fresh filtered air. During the summer 100% of the hot water and 100% of the electricity comes from the arctic sun. Take a peek at the electricity meter in August and watch it roll backwards!

About Prudence Ferreira

We are both passionate advocates for sustainability and met through our work involving the Passive House standard. Thorsten is originally from Germany and fell in love with Alaska when as a professional wilderness guide he brought expeditions here to explore its many wonders. He moved to Fairbanks and never looked back. Prudence is originally from the Bay Area and moved to Alaska in 2012 to get out of San Francisco and spend more time with Thorsten and out on the trail and rivers. We got married on a frozen lake in the White Mountains in December 2013. We both make our living teaching and helping others design and build sustainable shelters all over the country, but being adventurer nomads in spirit, we want to share our special home with others and quest further off the beaten path. We are hoping to rent our home often enough to support us being on the road (with a solar and wind powered camper and on foot and via packraft) traveling to remote Alaskan communities to help bring more awareness to modern sustainable design practices and tools to folks with limited access to resources.

Prudence Ferreira purchased this house in 2010

Why Prudence Ferreira chose Alaska

Thorsten chose this land to build on because of its wonderful view of the Chena Valley and the peaks of the Alaskan Range beyond. Chena Ridge is very quiet with large lots and yet very close to amenities. He believed that while many said a zero energy passive house could not be built in such a cold climate, that it was possible. Through much research and innovation, he brought his vision into reality.

What makes this house unique

This is hands down the most comfortable, healthy and efficient vacation rental you can find in the state of Alaska. Come on an Alaskan adventure and experience the superior performance of a passive house for yourself!

Guestbook comments from the manager

We came to visit our daughter who is a grad student at the University. We made the journey from Costa Rica with our twin daughters that are 10. The house was wonderful! The trampoline offered morning entertainment and the location was beautiful for morning runs. We loved the shutter system, which kept us sleeping on a normal schedule and the solar power/sustainability. Thank you for opening your house to our family.

great view, lovely home

  • 5 of 5

We had 6 adults stay and there was plenty of room for all. The black out shutters were a huge plus for our first experience with the all day/night sunlight. The view from the living room was fantastic and the house itself was very great. Prudence was a delight and she and my brother, who is a contractor, had a great discussion about the home and its unique building qualities.

Exceptional vacation home

  • 5 of 5

House was on hill with good view and with excellent ventilation and sunlight. Very good home theater to relax at the end of the day. Owners were helpful and responded promptly to help us use the home theater.

Fascinating Zero Energy House

  • 5 of 5

Not just a rental house, this is a home. It was a pleasure to stay in such a well appointed and comfortable home. Prudence was welcoming and very helpful answering all our questions. We cooked many meals in the kitchen that had everything we needed. The house was in a good location with beautiful views and a nice hiking trail just down the road. Loved the black out exterior sliding window covers to keep the light out at night. The trampoline in the back yard was hit with our kids! We will definitely stay here again when back in Fairbanks.
