Garfield, CO (also known as Monarch), elevation 9500', is six miles east of the Continental Divide surrounded by the San Isabel National Forest. Garfield originated as a mining town in the early 1800's. In the latter part of the century a fire swept through town leaving only 3 original buildings, The School House, a log cabin and the Courthouse/Jail which is now known as the Old Timer Cabin. Scattered throughout the area you will find foundations of original mining cabins from 200 years ago.

This had everything we needed. Very easy to access and a lovely deck for having coffee looking over the creek.

Solitude with everything you need to be comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was in a small subdivision but it felt very isolated no neighbor noise, no car sounds. Just the roaring of the stream behind the cabin and the sound of birds. Nicely close to Salida for shopping and wandering. Close to Monarch Pass and Monarch wildlife area. Easy drive to Mount Princeton Hot Springs. Fully equipped kitchen, clean, nice size, it turned out to be a good choice.

The roar of the creek was great.

This was a great vacation place!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at 1st Chair Chalet. Great location, very clean and well equipped for our summer trip. Hot tub was amazing! Loved that it had everything in the kitchen ( no duplicates- no extra stuff) Perfect! Beds were comfy and the sound of the creek was like a giant fan that lulled you to sleep! Location was central for our vacation excursions.Weather was perfect- 80's during day, 40's at night. Really liked Salida (Boathouse restaurant- so good!!)) , rode horseback at Granite Mountain outfitters ( great), hiked Mt Princeton and sat in the hot springs ( enjoyable). Traveled to Gunnison (Alpine Brewery was the bomb!) Wished we would have booked for longer stay. Thank you !
