We both moved to Moray for work reasons originally and then realised the beauty of living in the area. The people are very friendly and welcoming and there is a wide range of activities and facilities in the area. We originally lived in the historic fishing village of Burghead until we commenced building Birchbrae in 1999 ourselves. Work brought us back to Glasgow in 2004 and to ensure we could keep Birchbrae we decided to turn it in to a holiday home. However we don't intend to let go of Birchbrae and very much miss living there full time. We enjoy the outdoors especially cycling, canoeing, horse riding and plane spotting at RAF Lossiemouth !!
We are both in our late 40s/early 50s with a 10 yr old daughter. Suzanne classes Birchbrae as her natural home despite being a Glaswegian girl. Dougie (a paisley buddy) has lived in Moray much longer than Suzanne and enjoyed life as a Moray Rugby club player for many years. We both have made great friends in Moray and our best buddies live just along the road from Pluscarden Abbey. Our favourite treats in Moray are eating a cake & coffee at Boogie Woogie in Keith, pancakes at Baxters, ice cream from Fochabers, Chicken Tikka at the Kimberley Inn in Findhorn or a really good curry at the Al Bahar family run restaurant in Elgin. When we get time between changeovers we take a nostalgic trip over to Burghead (our old village), a walk along the beach, and over to either Lossiemouth for a bit of plane spotting or Findhorn for a nice pub meal at the Kimberly Inn. You'll often find us on our bikes at Speyside bay looking for dolphins & osprey and cycling inland up the Spey to Baxters for a pancake treat. Our favourite fish supply is in Buckie via Cullen beach for an ice cream or a bowl of Cullen Skink.
Suzanne & Dougie McIntyre purchased this cottage in 1999
Our heart is in Moray. The pace of life in Moray is fantastic. Within a few minutes you can be walking along golden sands, or lovely forests or do lunch and shop in the heart of Elgin. With this in mind and to satisfy Dougie's life time ambition to build a house we bought this plot from the farmer. The cottage is built on a natural clearing in the woodland which is slightly elevated from the main road. Origiinally the woodland was part of a large estate which was split up many many years ago. We named the cottage "Birch" as it's surrounded by Silver Birch trees and Brae meaning a small hill. Birchbrae is ideal for commuting to the main towns ( 20 mins in most directions) whilst living in the peace and quiet on a farm on the edge of a forest. Most fishing villages, towns and places of interest are within 20 - 60 mins drive from the cottage. The cottage itself is close to Ben Aigan, the monster mountain bike trails and the Speyside Way.
Our 1 acre garden is mostly forest with garden to the front. The cottage overlooks fields and to the forest covered hills towards Elgin. The sunsets are fantastic. The best thing to do on a sparkling clear frosty night is to sit in the toasty warm outdoor hot tub, watching the stars. Enjoy the rest of the evening at the log fire. After a day's site seeing relax with your favourite tipple at the kitchen table while someone else makes dinner or enjoy a summer's evening walk watching for deer and other wildlife on the farm track. The kids love playing in the garden building dens in the woods or checking out wildlife. Birchbrae is 100m from the nearest neighbour so within reason you can make as much noise as you wish without upsetting a neighbour or just enjoy the peace of having no neighbours.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage. The facilities were all good, cottage is in a beautiful spot with lovely views. The hot tub was well used in the evenings. It was nice to have a kitchen that a good deal of thought had gone into with plenty dishes and cutlery. We will be back hopefully for longer than a couple of nights, so much to see and do in the surrounding area especially the distilleries. Will definitely be recommending to friends and family.
Had the most wonderful time. House was perfect in every way. Owners was super every step of the way. Would highly recommend. Will definitely be back
Thanks for letting us stay in your lovely holiday home we had an excellent time! The kids loved being in the hot tub even in the snow. We would stay here again.
My family and I stayed at the cottage for a weekend in October. The cottage is a beautiful property, stocked with everything you require, including an amazing collection of board games that the kids loved. The hot tub was a bonus, again enjoyed by the whole family.
The owners couldn't have been more helpful, ensuring we had all the appropriate directions we required, included warnings of roadworks on roads to the cottage.
My family and I will definitely look at booking this location again.
Lovely and homely property with everything you need. Hot tub added to the experience. Friendly owners with lots of knowledge of the local area with very accurate directions to find the property.
It's been a great place for our two family holiday! It is indeed a lovely place with a nice view over the fields and hlls. It takes about 10 minutes to get to Keith (Supermarket, Petrol etc.), half an hour to the coast. Obvioulsy you come along destilleries everywhere.
The house is pretty new and offers plenty of space, especially the kitchen and the living room. The kitchen was very well equipped. In fact, there was nothing missing what I use at home. The cooker and the pots and everything were more than ok for 8 people. On our arrival we even found some lokal beer and wine in the kitchen.
The kids love the Hottub. The adults were more for the fireplace. There were logs for the fireplace provided for the whole week.
Suzanne was very friendly and helpful with every question. While emails took a bit of time sometimes, phoning was very nice, even for me (from Germany).
We can recommend this cottage strongly for every larger party. You will enjoy it.
