Beautiful Tuscan House in the mountains
A lovely rustic tuscan house in the hills above Lucca. Plenty of peace and quiet here. Lovely house with large terrace looking down towards Lucca, splash pool was very welcome as the temperature for the first few days was in the mid 30's! We had visited Pisa and Florence before having a week in this property, both are lovely cities and easy to get to. We used the 'Pisa People Mover' from the airport to the central train station and stayed overnight in a hotel then back to airport again the next day to pick up car and drive across to Florence, but the train is very accessible. Whilst here we took several trips across the mountain roads to visit Barga, Castelnuovo, Bagni di Lucca and Borgo. We visited Lucca twice and had an evening meal one night, lovely town. As the weather was so hot we had several trips to the beach, didn't like Lido di Camaiore or any of the beaches in that area as too commercial for us and you have to pay for sunbeds/umbrellas. We much preferred the 'free' beach at Marina di Vecchiano, plenty of parking, although you do have to pay, unlike in Spain.
Would thoroughly recommend this property if you are looking for a peaceful, quiet place to relax with plenty of interesting places to visit nearby. You soon get used to the hairpin bends on the way up the hill and my husband was driving them like an 'Italian' by the end of the week! You wouldn't want a big car though, the little Fiat Panda we hired was just right. Communication with the owner was very easy.
We always appreciate our visitors' reviews, as they sometimes discover things that we have not yet seen! (As in this one!) One of the things not mentioned here are the local restaurants which serve up superb food at very reasonable rates. Grazie
Lovely, peaceful mountain retreat.
This was the most peaceful villa we have ever stayed in with great views and lovely walks in the surrounding area. Perfect if you want to unwind and do very little. Not too far from Lucca which is a beautiful city.
The house was as described in the description, and the photos were accurate. Communication with the owners was good. I would highly recommend if you want a break from everyday life, though the wifi is there if you need it!
We always appreciate the views of our guests and we agree with these comments. We go there to unwind, enjoy the culinary expertise of the local restaurants (at very reasonable rates) and to enjoy the countryside. Yet you are not far from many of the popular tourist areas and with good train links not too far away.....easy to travel to major Italian cities without the worry of parking the car.
Met our needs, comfortable, pool area/approach need a lot of work.
The house lived up to our expectations. Loved the views, fireflies, little skittering lizards, we saw a porcupine crossing the road late one night which surprised us enormously!! Lots of driving, blind bends, hairpin bends and manic Italians. Very intimidating when your not used to it but I soon got used to it!! Loved Lucca, Florence and Pisa. Trains are great and cheap, very entertained to buy train tickets at the local cafe. Tried some of the recommended restaurants, lovely people in la font but service was awful, I had finished my main course a good 30 mins before my husband and sons arrived. Al collette was great, family run and lovely, a very aged grandma came out as we left to ask us if everything was OK, she was so nice, it was a Sunday afternoon and they had turfed the family out so we could eat!!' We were grateful but a tad embarrassed! The only negatives here were the derelict house next door and the dangerous steps down to the pool area, I would be very concerned about letting children go down there on their own, especially as the woodland by the pool falls away steeply and it could be nasty if someone fell. Try viareggio and some of the big old villas around the countryside. Al in all a great holiday,
Second stay... Still more to see and do!
We've recently returned from our second August stay at this lovely place and continue to recommend it highly. The house is well-equipped, owners are helpful and the house is a perfect size for a small family (we are 2 adults and 2 primary-age children).
The weather was particularly hot this year and we appreciated losing a few degrees by the house being in the hills - this made the stay much more bearable but still very much warm enough -- the kids were again able spend time in the pool while we were on the terrace planning and relaxing.
We were surprised to find many more places of interest this year including the villa tour near Lucca and the Passo di Radici - an exhilarating (slightly hair-raising!) drive. There is certainly a lot to see and do in the region.
Although a car is essential and the location peaceful, it's just a short drive to many wonderful places- Lucca itself, Pisa, the Grotto del Vento, Bagni di Lucca... Shops, restaurants (and cash machines, supermarkets) are all within very easy reach too. We may well be back again!
Wonderful getaway in great location
Our family spent a week in this lovely cottage in August 2014 finding everything we needed and great views! The house is well-located for Lucca, Pisa (an easy drive) and Florence (go by train from Lucca) as well as for the impressive marble mines and the Garfagnana. There is plenty to be explored if you like driving! It was great to have a small clean pool and the kids spent plenty of time in there. The house is located quite high up in the hills and this provided a welcome respite from the heat of the cities - lovely and warm but not stifling. Perhaps the only downside is the long and winding road up to the house; however, you soon get used to that and know every bend well! All in all, lovely house, great location, helpful owners; highly recommended.
We would like to thank Anna and family for their review. It is always good to know that someone has enjoyed the house and the appreciated the area.
Local activities include cycling, walking, swimming and fishing. Fishing guides are available. There are many very pleasant walks through the woods. A fifteen minute walk also takes you down to the nearest bar/restaurant/shop, although it is uphill on your return. The local restaurants are a delight! There are many within an easy drive, all serving very good local fare. To dine out is a real pleasure, and will not cost a fortune! There are many towns and villages within easy reach of the house, Lucca, Florence, Barga, & Bagni di Lucca to name a few, all with their own character and steeped in history. We are able to arrange walking tours of Florence and Pisa. Please contact the owners for more details.
For those of you interested in classical music.....Lucca and the surrounding area was home to the Puccini family. During the summer months, there are outdoor music festivals in Lucca and at Torre del Lago. We especially enjoy visiting in June, when the fireflies are at their best, on a nice warm evening.
