The 16th Century, picturesque village of Valldemossa, famed for its monastery where Chopin and Georges Sand stayed in 1838, is one of the most beautiful villages on the island, surrounded by spectacular mountain views of the Serra Tramuntana range. Here you may enjoy the comfort of this accommodation in perfect peace and a magical setting, far away from the madding crowds.
The self-contained Studio offered is in exceptionally quiet rural surroundings at the foot of the Son Moragues Natural Mountain Park, at an altitude of 400 metres. It is in a superb location for Winter Walking, Birdwatching, Nature and is an artist´s paradise. Within a short and lovely stroll you may look down on the ancient fishing (and smuggling) settlement of Puerto Valldemossa at the foot of impressive cliffs
The studio is 29sq.metres in area. It has a nice sized bed/living room, and from here an open archway which gives access to a small, but very attractive, well-equipped kitchen with dining area, and there is a large bathroom. It has ´digital control´central heating, to ensure your comfort during the winter months. It looks across a lawn towards our house with mountain views all round, and is fronted by it own 20 sq. m sunny but shaded terrace with table, chairs, sunloungers, and barbeque for your private use.
There are varied mountain walks you can make from the Studio´s front door, some quite spectacular, and many more unforgettable excursions within easy (and generally beautiful) reach by car. Recommended books are Landscapes of Mallorca by Valerie Crespi-Green (Sunflower Books) and Walking in Mallorca by June Parker (a Cicerone Guide).
We've stayed for a week and had a wonderful time. The cottage is clean and well-equipped. The mountain views are superb, the owner very friendly. It was a perfect base for an excellent hiking holiday.
The Garden Studio is in fact a partly (some of it is still in use for tools etc) converted garage within the owner's house garden. The accommodation looks out at the owner's house, very nearby, the owner of which is in residence pretty much at all times. It is over 2km from Valldemossa, a walk along a busy road with no pavements.
On first arrival, we were disappointed to find that there was nothing provided in the way of soap, washing up liquid, salt etc. We had arrived on a Sunday and bought basic foodstuffs at the local supermarket, but it was closed by the time we discovered this. We were loathe to buy all these things for such a short stay; it was an annoyance. We have holidayed in many self catering cottages, never has there been nothing in the way of essentials provided, even if it is whatever the previous renters have left behind.
There was a list of Do's and Don'ts, none of which were very helpful, no emergency numbers, no bus times etc. They mainly related to the owner's dog, which came to the door frequently. The information regarding the supermarket was out of date. The facilities were BASIC, there was no aircon, which meant opening the windows and numerous mosquitos flying in. An army of ants were nesting in the kitchen. The property could have done with a bit of tlc, the grout was chipped away and the fridge, microwave and boiler were ancient and VERY noisy. During the day, the sprinklers were on, which splashed over the patio and made sitting there unpleasant: we were also only several feet away from the owner, who was out in her (beautiful) garden. We did not stay for the length of the week, but the owner charged us the same price. We were not shown the electricity meter before or after the owner told us what we owed on top of rent. Considering that we were out all of the time as it was a little uncomfortable to hang around, and that we had switched off the noisy fridge, we must just have been paying for the boiler.
We were lucky in that we had some local knowledge and contacts, if we hadn't we might have had a rather miserable time.
We would have been much better off paying for a B&B, for the same cost we would have been getting breakfast and we wouldn't have been doing dishes with no soap and the very old, dirty scourer that was provided. We ended up eating out every night to avoid the place. Valldemossa is very beautiful, with plenty to see and do, we hope to return there. We will not be returning to 'the Garden Studio'.
Valldemossa has easy access to all parts of the island and is an ideal centre for mountain excursions. There are many restaurants in all price ranges, including the exclusive Valldemossa Hotel. There is a small well stocked supermarket, excellent bakers, banks, pharmacy, and other stores selling clothing, jewellery, artwork and gifts. Sundays there is a Market. The romantic old Valldemossa monastery, the Palace of King Sancho and Michael Douglas´s Costa Nord Cultural Centre, provide interesting excursions, along with Miramar and Son Marroig a few kilometres away. Puerto Valldemossa also, not only offers an excellent fish restaurant, but superb swimming and snorkelling in crystal clear waters, and is only ´just down the road´. Deya, once home of Robert Graves, is a mere 10 minutes drive away and abounds with restaurants, the famous La Residencia Hotel, and a bohemian night life. There are also classical and jazz concerts in both villages, especially during the summer months.
