'As first time visitors, the area was all we hoped it would be. Thank you for sharing your little bit of ‘heaven’ with us.'
South Wales couple.
My family didn't get to spend much time at the cottage as the rest of our family was staying in a nearby town. We found the owner very helpful and we liked that he had produced a newsletter of local events happening that week, it was very useful.
The cottage was very small but big enough for our needs as we were not spending very much time there. Only problem with the cottage was the beds. They mattress was very lumpy, like it was past its best. I would also recommend travellers bring their own pillows as the ones provided were very flat and not great quality.
The pool was lovely. It was well looked after and a great size. It was a shame that it was only open to use between 10am and 7pm as my family liked to be out and about most of the day so often missed a chance to enjoy the pool.
Overall, for the price, the cottage was suitable for our needs.
Le Gicq really is about as quiet and free from hustle and bustle as its possible to get in France. It took us 3 days to adjust to the pace of life and slow down to enjoy the peace and tranquillity.
In the area theres lots of historic places to visit, and also the fantastic cognac producers (that filled our car for the return).
Colin and Ann run a lovely couple of gites. They are not huge, but they are very clean and come with all the cooking stuff you need to be self sufficient for a family of 4 for a week or two. The best thing however is the pool! Colin maintains this with the fevered attention to detail that you would expect from the groundsman at Wembley or Wimbledon! Its literally the cleanest pool I have ever been in and its not overly chlorinated and is heated just right so is perfect for swimming in.
Ann keeps a wonderful garden maintained and the smell of flowers while we sat outside and BBQ'd was great.
Colin is also a mine of information on what to see and do in the area, most days we could ask him what was on and he would have a selection of markets, seasonal events and suggested destinations to visit. They really are wonderful hosts and if you book with them then you won't be disappointed.
There is 3G in the village, next time we would take a 3G dongle as two weeks with no internet was nearly as tough on my wife and I as it was on the kids!
Thanks again for creating such a wonderful haven at La Forge in Le Gicq.
Conrad and Nishe.
It was a lovely cottage with a heated swimmingpool, even though the weather wasn't what we had hoped for we had a brillant time. La Rochelle is just over an hour away where you can find a beautifull aquarium with fish from allover the world. Ile de Ré is also a must to see.
Colin and Ann were fantastic hosts, if you needed anything or wanted to know something they would be there for you.
First impression was nice garden with pool.
Going into the gite / cottage very small,I believe we may have been the first couple of the season as it smelled very musty,
Outside swimming pool, lovely and very peacefully as we were the only ones there for one day then another couple arrived.
Owners very nice and informative , try the restaurant in the village of neve ,excellent food and very friendly.
Overall, ok if you want peace and quiet .
A lovely gite, well equipped and the pool is a real bonus
We stayed in this cottage during the first week of July 2010 and we loved every minute of our stay. The cottage is located in the quiet village of Le Gicq where it seems that time has stopped. The swimming pool was great for the older and younger members of our family. The owners of the cottage (Colin and Ann) are very friendly. Our 2 daughters (aged 5 and 9) were very sorry to leave after a week. We also tasted and purchased very nice cognac and pineau des charantes from a local producer in the nearby village of Les Touches de Perigny. We will definitely come back.
The cottage is within easy reach of historic towns such as Cognac, with tours of the famous distilleries, Saintes, with its Roman amphitheatre and river excursions and the beautiful and ancient port of La Rochelle.
Swimming and boating are available at St Jean d'Angely, Cognac and Saintes. Golf courses at Cognac and Saintes.
A wide variety of seaside resorts are only an hour away - Royan, Fouras, and the long sandy beaches of the Ile d'Oleron.
Excellent restaurants serving local seafood specialities are available within 30 mins drive.
