Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + open loft with 2 twin beds; 1 Bath, Sleeps 6 people

The Almighty Struggle is a small rustic, shingle style cottage, with an oversized deck. The cabin faces the Union River inlet with views of Acadia National Park in down east Maine.

Nestled in a clearing on 14 acres of natural woods and fields, you can see deer, turkey, porcupine, and maybe even a moose. The beach extends 400 feet along the shore and is great for exploring and swimming. It has ledges hosting mussels, crabs, sea urchins, and starfish.

You will enjoy watching the seals, kayaking, swimming, hiking, fishing, and watching the local lobstermen gather their traps.

The cottage is small, clean , and well appointed for couples and small families that want a private outdoor vacation experience.

We are well situated for day trips to Acadia National Park and exploring the villages of the Blue Hill Peninsula.

About Jan Treworgy

This property has been in our family for over 200 years. It was part of the adjoining properties and was both a working farm and the shore was used by the coastal schooner, "The Revenue" captained by Albert Treworgy.

Jan Treworgy purchased this cottage in 1984

Why Jan Treworgy chose Surry

We have maintained the cottage since we inherited it. Our children have spent many happy summers here. The area is beautiful and it has provided us with a lovely way to teach our kids to live simply and in an ecologically sustainable way. They fish, harvest mussels, clams, and they pick blueberries, raspberries and sometimes even cranberries. They have learned to live in the woods without destroying it. They now are learning sustainable forestry. Everything on a very small scale, but an education outside the classroom for everyone.

What makes this cottage unique

Most visitors comment on how comfortable the beds are. Yes, we do use high end linens and down comforters, but the ocean breezes and the outdoor activities make sleeping a joy. Being up and ready for a whole new adventure tomorrow!

We just left this perfect cottage and are so sad already! What a perfect spot to relax with our two year old and dog. We stayed on the beach for most of each day exploring the tide. We found the place rustic yet well appointed and immaculately clean. When can we go back?

Great location but aspects of house not refined

  • 3 of 5

Lovely sunrise location on the beach however the house itself did not allow for privacy between rooms. The ceilings are unfinished which left a gap of several inches on the top of the walls not to mention the exposed electric wiring running in and out of rooms (!!). The TV and coffee maker did not work (however the DVD player did). We booked for a Sat-Sat rental (which the HomeAway website permitted and there was no visible indication that it was supposed to be Sun-Sun). Luckily we were able to arrive on the Sat. Again the quiet location down a gravel track was ideal with pretty views from the beach, however we expected a more "complete" house.

Owner's Response: I am so sorry our cottage did not meet your expectations. The original part of the cottage was built in the 1920s the addition was added in the 1950s. It has always been a getaway cottage is never intended to be house . I hope you had a good experience in Maine overall and we would gladly welcome you back .

Great place with a cool coastline

  • 5 of 5

Cottage is even nicer than the postings make it out to be. Waterfront is about 25-50' from the cottage and has a neat glacial erratic perched on the ledge near the high tide mark. It's quite, clean, fairly private and well maintained. Will definitely seek to rent it again when visiting the in-laws if they have a full house!

Peaceful / Restful Vacation Cottage Location!

  • 5 of 5

This is our 4th year renting this charming little cottage on Newberry Neck in Surry Maine. We love the quaint / charming cottage. We visited with 3 generations of our family (great grandmother, mother / mother-in-law; my brother and his spouse and their 8 year old grand daughter and me) this year. Mom is 80 and loves spending time on the porch and down at the swing by the water. She can't get down the bank but loves the sound of the water and watching us have fun.

We love walking on the beach looking for seashells and sea glass and playing in the water. My sister-in-law and I fight over who is going to do the dishes because we both love the view from the kitchen window while you're washing the dishes. No dishwasher, no worries for us! The cabin is situated on Newberry Neck which is very peaceful unlike some of the other seaside villages with the hustle / bustle of the area. This cottage is centrally located for trips to Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, Schoodic Point and other coastal areas.

This year we discovered Pugnuts; a family-owned Ice Cream Shop which makes their own ice cream, gelato and cones and traveled to Cadillac Mountain for sunrise. You would think the TV was on most days with an 8 year old along...NOPE...she never asked us to turn it on! We love WKIT (100.3) radio station which we have playing at the cottage all week.

We plan to come back to the cottage next year, but maybe in the fall to see the foliage in Maine. If we can swing it...hopefully we'll be back for two weeks as we love the charm of this cottage. Perfect size for our relaxing family vacations. The cottage has most of the cooking supplies you might we do most of our meals at the cottage instead of eating out. We've also utilized the grill for burgers and hot dogs.

I was able to read 5 books this year while I was visiting the cottage. Brought one with me from home and pulled the other 4 books off of the bookshelf at the cottage. I would highly recommend this cottage for groups up to 6/7 who want a truly relaxing vacation by the water!

Cute cottage on the water

  • 4 of 5

This was a very cute little house very close to the water. It was very clean, and had a wonderful breeze in all rooms. The kitchen was modern and the bathroom was roomy. Bedrooms were very cute, quite small. Overall the house had a true cottage feel. There were neighbors through the trees that you could hear coming in and out sometimes, but they were not too close. Very pretty spot.

Our visit to the Almighty Struggle last August was like a little piece of Heaven. The cottage has everything you need. Walking at low tide & looking out at the water while washing dishes, even made my son enjoy doing the dishes! And we were a short 6 minute drive from my brother's house. We are hoping to go back this year. Thank you to Jan & Al. Andrea Peters & family
