This historic church is part of an Historic Landscape District on the National Register. All the other houses in the village have been restored, making for lovely walks and the relaxed experience of being surrounded by nature and history. From the road the church appears as it has for the past 150 years, but inside it has been transformed into a spacious and unique vacation residence. Where the altar once stood large glass doors open onto a flagstone terrace with views of the hillside and fields.
The interior is loft-like in feel with spaces flowing from front to back and from downstairs to the upstairs via a large opening where the balcony boundary once existed. The dining / living area measures 34' X 18'. Upstairs is an entirely open 34' x 45' space with a working studio section and windows on all sides.
This property is NOT a typical rental, and it is not new and completely sanitized functionally or aesthetically. If you are looking for a motel like convenience, do not consider this rental. It is personal, and some aspects are a bit funky, hand-nade, adapted. It is unique and full of personality.
My family's property is on the hills above the valley where The church is located, the easternnost tributary of the Susquehana river that originates in Otsego Lake in Cooperstown. It is in the center of what remains of a small village, the old hotel, the lawyer's office, the old grange hall, and a two churches, both now renovated for weekend homes.
Catherine Kernan purchased this house in 1979
This historic church is not your standard neutral rental property. It is filled with family furniture, and upstairs is a printmaking and painting studio. It is an artist's loft in the country.
Lots of indoor space, quiet, lovely back patio, and lots of hiking right out the back door.
This place is a disaster..... Where do I begin?
Bathroom. Once you arrive you will see why there are no picures of it on the site.
The sink has not been touched in 50 years and probably not cleaned in that time either
Huge rust stain right where water runs....
Speaking of water
The faucet in the kitchen sink magically started dripping the night before I arrived. To fix this two sponges were placed In the sink to stop the sound. That worked until they were full
When I wrang them out the water was literally black.
The shower does not drain well. The water that accumulates is brown. There was mold in the grout and lime stains everywhere.
And don't plan on taking more than a ten minute shower if you can stand being in it at all
The toilet..... Take a guess... Brown from the water that runs in it.... Permanently stained.
Kitchen Was fine if you like the 50s
No microwave is a good thing to note
The rest of the place is as advertised
Again notice the DVD TV area not shown
Tv is at least 20 years old and the couch to stay in touch on must have been picked up from somebody's driveway for disposal
You will be lucky to make or receive calls much less anything else so forget communication
the only thing good about the upstairs is the two beds.... If you like sleeping on boards
The rest is wasted space for owners old studio
Then there was the brother who magically appeared without notice twice to get measurements?... When somebody is there REALLY?!!!
But the best was when we arrived back one evening to find a three story scaffolding erected in front of the door
We could barely get into to place
When questioned the brother said he did not see a car so he figured we were gone
Believe it or not there is more but I think you get the point
The owner gutted the place and threw some old crap around to make it look presentable
Don't think about using spare sheets or blankets
The smell that comes out the areas they are kept in is unbearable
No shades or curtains
The few there are could not be worth 10 dollars combined
To top it off the owner charged me 50 dollars for extra cleaning which she would not explain
It was never close to clean when I arrived
The only thing worse than the place itself was dealing with the owner. If it were a different area the term slumlord would be perfect
Find somewhere else if you want to visit this area. Use the advice I learned the hard way.
My daughter and I, along with another family visited the area because our boys were playing at Cooperstown Dreams Park for the week. Although I wish my daughter and I would have had more time to truly explore this historic church/home, we enjoyed the peaceful late nights and the comfortable place to lay our heads down at night after many hectic days. We were up early and off to the baseball fields every day and usually didn't get back to the house until 11 p.m. This home is truly a lovely place to stay!
My husband and I enjoyed a quiet and relaxing week in this unique property. No TV, no internet, sparse phone -- exactly what we wanted, though you can find free wifi in places nearby. Close enough to Cooperstown to enjoy the Hall of Fame and other attractions. This church has been renovated to a comfy and beautiful home. The kitchen was really nice as well! We highly recommend this lovely place.
My husband and I just returned from a week at this beautiful historic church. The location is a bit remote, which is exactly what we wanted (no internet or TV reception but we were able to watch DVDs). This lovely home is within 45 minutes of Cooperstown and its many attractions. The kitchen is very nice as well. Highly recommended!

Cooperstown is 22 miles away over the hills, a lovely drive. There is a fishing stream in the valley, and there are many hikes in the area.
The building is old and although re-purposed as a weekend home, staying in it is not a "motel" experience. It has some quirks and
a lot of personality.
Only consider it if you want to enjoy what it offers, and if you do not mind driving 40 minutes to reach Cooperstown.
