Peaceful and Cozy Apartment on the Third Floor of our Victorian Home

Bedrooms Studio
Space 800 sq ft
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

One Bedroom with Glimpses of the Picturesque Harbor Across the Street

Occupying the entire third-floor dormer of our 1874 Victorian home, which has been owned by our family since it was built, the apartment offers one bedroom with a double bed and a twin in the same room, a full bath with tub/shower combination, full kitchen, and a living room with basic cable television. The apartment is best suited to a couple or a couple with a child.

The home is situated in a lovely neighborhood of fine antique homes, across the road from the lively port of New Harbor, where lobster boats bring in the daily haul. Shaw's Lobster Wharf on the opposite side of the harbor serves up the catch that night--you can eat your lobster on an open deck overlooking the harbor.

Our guests can walk to Back Cove, where we offer rowboats for your use, in about five minutes, and another few minutes' walk takes you to our stunning property on the open Atlantic, where folks can climb the rocks, watch wildlife, including our resident osprey, and mess around in tidepools.

The apartment does not have Wi-Fi, but free Wi-Fi is available at our office, which is on the grounds. Cell phones work spottily in our area, and we can advise you of places where reception is better. We also have a land line for guests' use.

In the barn, attached to the house, we have an extensive library of books, puzzles, and games, and we also have outdoor games for the family to play on the lawn. Children welcome!

About Merle and Karen Thompson

Merle has lived in New Harbor his whole life, and Karen has been here for 35 years. Karen grew up in the Boston area and was a guest at Thompson Cottages since she was a baby. New Harbor is our year-round home.

We live in New Harbor year round and we love our home. We enjoy welcoming new guests and sharing all we love about our gorgeous area with them.

Being excellent stewards of our family legacy and of the natural beauty of our property is very, very important to us.

Merle and Karen Thompson purchased this apartment in 2000

Why Merle and Karen Thompson chose New Harbor

Our family has operated this property since 1920 and we, the third generation to own it, have been its stewards since 2000. The property is a treasure to us and our family, and we care for everything with great attention to detail and love. We live here year round, and we enjoy having our guests return year after year to a place that comes to mean a great deal to them, too. We also greatly enjoy introducing new guests to the beauty and peace of our beloved area.

What makes this apartment unique

All of our properties feature oil paintings by Merle's grandfather, G. H. Thompson, a nationally known artist, as well as some by the many artists who come here to work.

Coziness, cleanliness, and peace are our hallmarks.

Off the Beaten Path! Absolutely worth it!

Beautiful location!

It is perfect for a family with kids. The Thompsons had games, puzzles, books, a swing and more. I can't say enough great things about our stay. It was really clean, cute, cozy and had everything we needed and they were so generous! There were extra towels, linens, soap, anything you needed was available anytime, you just help yourself. They even have a row boat and back dock to explore where lobster boats come in. It was such a nice place to stay it left us with a welcoming feeling like we were family. The house is an old Victorian with old fashioned details and abdsolutely charming!

It was 2 minutes away from the beach, ice cream, tons of galleries, grocery store, post office and The lighthouse! A must see!

It is also close to town, shopping, and a half hour away from Maine Botanical Garden, which has an amazing play area for kids.

Perfect place to experience Maine!

Owner's Response: We especially appreciate that you had a great time with your daughter, Amy, because one of our main missions is to provide a fun, safe, and comfortable venue for families with children to enjoy time together. We love introducing people to our area and seeing families create happy memories together in a special place! Having you with us was a pleasure. We hope to see you again. --The Thompsons

Life the way it's supposed to be...

  • 5 of 5

My children and I were looking for a Maine experience on the coast without crowds and t-shirt shops. The Thompson house provided and then some. The accommodations were clean, comfortable, and much larger than pictured. The hospitality was outstanding with all the extras provided (linens, games, onsite library!) and questions answered any time of the day. Kids were able to crab and explore in a back cove. Not being from New England, we loved tracking the tides and the kids were able to explore in a back cove just a walk down the road. Thompson property extends to a boat house and dock with free access to row boats. We'd return to Thompson House in a heartbeat.

Clean, private, quiet, friendly, affordable

  • 5 of 5

I love this place! Thompsons Cottages are exactly as described. Comfortable, very clean, well-equipped, quiet [in off-season], affordable, no-frills. Merle, the owner, spent a good amount of time orienting me to my apartment, the complex, and the area, which is kind of remote and has limited services. I enjoyed the amenities [boathouse, footbridge, path down to the rocky shore], as well as WiFi [apartment was near the office] and privacy [Merle checked in on me once, no housekeeping service, friendly guests]. If you're looking for upgrades like designer furniture, keep looking--this place is homey, not elegant. You'll find the town almost devoid of signage, so use your common sense, ex. don't park where lobster fishers are likely to park their trucks in the morning. Many lovely places to visit in the area--Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, nature preserves, public beach, day cruises, kayaking, local crafters and businesses. I've already booked another stay for later this year.
