NOT OPEN IN THE WINTER! Summer only due to road access.
There are not many other places where you can get this immersed in the peace and quiet of nature, and fully appreciate the gorgeous scenery of the Rocky Mountains. Nestled in the breathtaking San Juan range, this A-frame cabin is the ultimate relaxing getaway, while also perfectly comfortable with all the amenities. It sleeps up to 9, with three bedrooms and a pull out couch, but still has a cozy feel. Perfect for families looking for a Colorado adventure, group reunions, or couples looking for a quiet getaway. Silverton is a 10-15 minute drive away.
This cabin is secluded, and meant as a retreat for you to truly get away and unwind. We don't have wi-fi there. It also doesn't have cell reception (You can get cell service once you get to the main road on the way back to town - about 3 min drive from the cabin). The cabin does have all the other amenities: full kitchen, washer / dryer, phone, propane stove for heat. There is standard electricity and a house phone for emergencies. Three different porches are great places to hang-out, read a book, sit in a hammock, and appreciate the views.
It's also surrounded by many artifacts of the mining era -- an old miners cabin, in excellent condition is down the road. Several other abandoned mines are scattered throughout the area, giving the cabin an unparalleled back-woods feel.
Bottom floor has main living areas, master bedroom (king bed) and full bath. The cabin has an open kitchen, large windows in the living room and a pull out couch. Top floor has 2 bedrooms (each has 2 single beds), a second full bath and a small hang-out area.
The cabin is located on a dirt road -- that means cars with high clearances are encouraged for easier driving; however we've gone there many times in a prius. The cabin has a very, very steep driveway. ONLY cars with 4 wheel drive and a high clearance should go up the driveway. If you have a standard car, we usually park on the road and walk up the driveway (about 200 feet).
We welcome WELL-BEHAVED and HOUSE-TRAINED dogs that will have a minimal impact on the cabin. We'd like to keep it open to dogs so please clean up after your dog. There is a $20 / night pet fee.
We're the Schiller family -- originally from Wisconsin, and now living in Colorado, we purchased this cabin to to retreat and unwind in the outdoors, and to spend time with our kids and grandkids. It's given us many wonderful memories exploring the woods and mines, Jeeping to alpine lakes, hiking, and just sitting and relaxing in a hammock on the porch. We've also used it for large gatherings for friends and family -- a long kitchen table serves the perfect gathering spot for meals and games.
Lindsey Schiller purchased this cabin in 2002
This is a truly unique part of Colorado, and one of the most stunning mountain ranges in Colorado. The cabin is surrounded by a relics of the mining era, when this region was used for silver mining. That has left many abandoned mines, old miners cabins, and other artifacts that make for some awesome exploring.
The Old Hundred Gold mine is down the road and gives daily tours of an former gold and silver mind -- you travel back into the heart of the mountain in a mining car and see the tunnels where miners worked.... awesome experience.
Very cute cabin in the mountains, away from it all. Really enjoyed our stay. Thanks so much! What a wonderful honeymoon.
The Schiller Cabin was everything we hoped it would be. It was secluded, yet accessible, with Silverton only a few miles down the road - about 15 minutes or so. The cabin was clean and well maintained, and Lindsey was very responsive to calls and emails. The property the cabin sits on is absolutely beautiful, with a large creek flowing just feet beyond the back deck. My only complaint is that we didn't stay longer because there is so much to do and see in the area. We LOVED not having TV, wifi or cell service. Definitely a treat if you're used to having to be reachable. Can't say enough good things about this cabin - we'll definitely be back.
We loved the cabin and location of the cabin. We would love to rent it again. The only problem was the upstairs bedroom #1 mattresses were only box springs or bunk bed mattresses (which was not comfortable for an adult).
This cabin was truly memorable! I loved the fact that technology wasn't an option...my 2 year old son missed his cartoons but that was remedied with his portable DVD player. I enjoyed waking up each morning and using the stove and utilizing the rocking chairs. One night we had a visitor, a porcupine! We were shocked to see his tail dangling down while we looked out the door window. He was apparently sitting on top of the antlers. This trip really made some wholesome memories and I'll cherish them forever. If I had to complain about anything at all (which really wasn't that big of a deal, we managed) would be 2 things. 1, we could have used a larger skillet (town didn't have a bigger one) and 2, I wish the hot water stayed hotter longer. This will not prevent us from wanting to return, we loved it!! Thanks for giving my family this wonderful opportunity.
We stayed at Linsay's cabin over the 4th of July weekend and if you're not familiar, visiting Silverton for the 4th of July is like going to Sturgis during the rally. Simply put, it's extremely crowded. The great thing about her cabin is once you get there you feel like you're all by yourself. We were literally surrounded by hundreds of RV's, tents, and campers, but we felt like we were the only people around for miles. It's secluded, with just the right amenities, and close enough to town to enjoy what Silverton has to offer and get away when you've had your fill of tourists and 4x4 enthusiasts.
The views from every window in the place were fabulous! A great place to disconnect from everything. The views and the stream made it the perfect place to stay. Leaving a window open at night made sleeping that much more enjoyable. All necessities were available to the renting party. There was a hungry marmot that liked boot and helmet linings. An issue with the water heater was quickly addressed after a call to the owner. The driveway is a bit challenging but manageable with a high clearance vehicle. If you needed to "connect" with the outside world, a quick 2 mile drive down the road provided a resolution. Excellent access to many ATV/jeep trails. The San Juan mountains are rugged but beautiful. A great place to stay and I would stay there again.
The cabin has access to amazing scenic hikes right from the front door. Spring waterfalls and fall colors are particular highlights.
The town of Silverton is a 5-10 minute drive away for restaurants, the local distillery, and groceries.
