Nell Gwyn Cottage is located in a wing of Orton Hall, a Jacobean Mansion in Orton, Cumbria. It is approached via an automatic gate along a tree lined drive in seven acres of private grounds. It is a couple of minutes from the village and is conveniently located for holiday activities in the Lakes, the Dales and the Eden Valley, whilst also being easy of access via the M6 motoway or the trans Pennine A66 route.
Nell Gwyn has been renovated to a high specification and enlarged to form a well proportioned dwelling in which the charm of an old cottage blends with modern facilities. It has two large bedrooms, two bathrooms, a comfortable and spacious lounge with TV, VCR, DVD and CD Stereo System, a dining hall and a fully fitted traditional kitchen with oak units, dishwasher, refrigerator, oven, ceramic hob and microwave oven. The cottage offers a secluded holiday location which is nevertheless close to village amenities and convenient of access being just minutes from the M6 motorway. Whether you are looking for an active holiday or just a quiet place to unwind, Nell Gwyn is the perfect base, offering easy access to the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the Eden Valley.
Orton Hall is a grade II listed mansion dating from the 1660's with additions made in the late 19th century.
It is approached along a private drive through well established grounds of about seven acres, in which there are mature trees, extensive lawns and plenty of space to relax. Facilities for communal use include an elegant oak panelled great hall with pool table and piano, a coin op laundry and storage space suitable for bicycles.
Described by A W Wainwright as "one of Westmorland's loveliest villages" Orton gained the Cumbria Best of Countryside Award in 2002 and Cumbria Village of the Year 2004. There is a shop cum post office, a pub which serves meals, and two tearooms, one listed in the Les Routiers guide. For those with a sweet tooth, a further attraction will be Kennedy's hand made chocolate factory, with its associated shop. Orton is also a popular stop off point for Coast to Coast walkers.
Orton boasts one of the original Farmers Markets featuring produce from local farmers and growers. This is a regular sell out event, taking place on the second Saturday of each month.
I only wished we could have stayed for longer! A lovely escape from work and worries to a beautifully tranquil and peaceful location. The cottage is fabulous! Although the weather during our stay wasn't exactly wonderful we still managed to get out for walks every day - even getting fairly lost in the mist and rain on Great Asby Scar! Scout Scar above Kendal is well worth a visit, and the riverside walk by Askham and Lowther Castle, also the 'other' Borrowdale. We generally visit the Lake District every summer but usually stay and walk around the Keswick area so it was a lovely change. After a wet and windy walk the cottage was a warm and comfortable welcome with the softest beds, fluffiest large towels and plenty of hot water - even for my teenage daughter who loves to wallow in a deep bath! Perfect surroundings for a cosy Autumn evening of watching Downton Abbey with a nice glass of wine.
Spotlessly clean and well equipped. Beautiful grounds. Very spacious with enough separation of the bedrooms for my teenage daughter to feel she had her own space (more than at home!).
Teenager missed the WiFi but we loved it.
Very detailed directions and instructions and keys arrived in plenty of time. Automatic gates fooled us so might be worth adding to the instructions. Lots of maps and guides provided in the property.
Orton village is delightful and George did a nice pub meal.

Le cottage est très bien situé à égale distance entre les Yorkshire Dales et Lake District. La région est sublime, nous avons fait de très belles randonnées.
We had an exceptional week in this beautiful cottage, the perfect get-away to recharge your batteries. The gardens gave the children space for hide and seek, the snooker table was great fun. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this cottage, it was clean, had everything we needed and more, a really special find.

This two bedroomed cottage has all the modern conveniences you need in a beutiful village well located for the Lakes, Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines. A good selection of eating places nearby if you don't want to cook and, if you are lucky like we were, wall to wall sunshine for the whole week!
Nell Gwyn offers a convenient central base for a variety of activities. For walkers, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales are just a short drive away along good roads. More locally, there are good walks direct from the cottage, while to the south, the nearby Howgill Fells offer quiet days out with panoramic views of the Pennines, the Dales and the Lakeland Fells. The quiet local lanes also offer good possibilities for cyclists, while golf is available at nearby Appleby and Ravenstonedale.
For the less energetic, there are countless sightseeing opportunities and old market towns to visit. The spectacular Settle-Carlisle railway runs through the area and there are regular boat trips on nearby Ullswater and Windermere.
Serious shoppers will enjoy Kendal, with its variety of local shops and markets and the Orton Farmers Market helps you take the tastes of Cumbria home with you.

Nell Gwyn Cottage is let to suit your dates to the best of our ability. The rental rates above are shown for a one week's stay starting any day and rates for shorter stays can be quoted on request.

Check in time is 4.00pm and we request you to vacate the cottage by 10.00am of your leaving day.
A deposit of £50 is required to secure a reservation. The balance becomes due one month before the arrival date (six weeks for overseas guests).
