About Melissa Nelson

We love riding motorcycles around the Black Hills and were looking for a home that we could stay in while riding, or visiting with our family then rent when we are not there. We found many homes but most were on gravel. This property is on a paved road that also gives us the peacefulness of the Black Hills. The creek in the front yard was the deal maker for us. We enjoy our time just the two of us and also when we bring our 4 grown children to visit. Come visit God's country.

Perfect, will rent again next time

  • 5 of 5

This house was more than we expected. The owners were very friendly and answered all questions promptly. The creek running through the property made for hours of entertainment for the children with us and the location was close enough to town yet set back enough for it to feel secluded. We came up for a family reunion and used our home as a meeting point for our entire family. The deck and yard were a perfect space for our gathering and we've already started to plan for next year. We most certainly will be renting this home again. The only thing I recommend to the owner would be to purchase more coffee mugs. There were only four but it made for an entertaining game, the last one awake had to drink from the measuring cup :) Thank you Melissa for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home.

Home has everything you need. Location is private and peaceful. Hill City is just a few minutes away if you need groceries or want to do tourist things.

Good, but could've been great

  • 5 of 5

I am giving the property 5 stars because for the most part our stay was great! The property is very clean and quiet. It's down a quiet road but very close to Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer State Park. The location can't be beat. We loved the quiet stream out front as well! My only issue with the property is that it is supposed to sleep 10 people so I expected plenty of linens and dishes. There were not. Our group was 6 adults and 5 children (the 11th guest was approved by the property owner). We booked our trip in October of 2015 so there was plenty of time to be prepared. We found that there were not enough pillows, blankets, sheets and washcloths (there were 6 washcloths in the whole house!). Luckily some in our group had brought some of these items from home so we got by. And we did a lot of laundry. We were on a 2 week long tour of the West and we did not have room to bring all this from home. As stated in the property description, linens and dishes are provided. I notified the property owner of this and she told me I could go to their other property and take what we needed from there. I felt like I shouldn't have to do that. It's our vacation. A few more coffee mugs would've been nice too. These things are all cheap and easy to obtain and would've made our stay great instead of good. I would still recommend this property to others and we would return to it if we are ever in the area!

Great place to stay for family vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We wanted a place to stay that would accommodate 6 adults and 3 grandchildren ranging in age from 3 to 9 and a place that was away from the busy areas yet centrally located. This listing fit our need exactly and we had a wonderful experience. The owners are very accommodating and respond quickly to any requests. Our grand-kids spent many hours exploring and playing in the small creek that runs through the property. After a busy day of touring the Black Hills it was nice to come home to a quiet relaxing cabin away from the daily crowds. We highly recommend this place or the other listing just up the road also owned by the Nelsons.

Perfect Location and Space

  • 5 of 5

We stayed the week before Sturgis and couldn't have been more pleased with the location and space. The house is up a small rode and you have a real cabin feeling as there are no immediate neighbors. The cabin met our needs and the kids loved running around the property (especially the creek that runs through the property). We we're very pleased and would recommend over any other place we've stayed. I wish there was a fire pit but half the state was on a fire ban and this house is secluded on the base of a mountain in the woods so I can understand. I would certainly go back. 5 min to everything and still felt like a private cabin in the mountains.

Great place to make great memories!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this cabin with our 5 daughters, ranging in age from 4-13. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the cabin that was well stocked with everything we needed. There is ample sleeping room with linens provided, a fully stocked kitchen, plenty of towels for showering, and full laundry facilities. The cabin itself is spacious and comfortable. However, the true gem of the property is the creek outside! My kids had so much fun playing in and around it that they often didn't want to leave to go see other attractions. The cabin is easily accessible just off the road, but still seems very private, and is in close proximity to many area attractions (Mount Rushmore, Custer Park, Wade's Gold Mill, Brule Native American Experience, etc). Hill City itself was a charming place, and we were so sad to see our vacation come to an end. Melissa was fabulous to work with, and quickly responded to any questions we had. We left with fabulous memories, and, thanks to the creek, some fabulous family pictures as well!
