Wonderful house for a peaceful getaway
We visited Casa Pamakanya over Christmas and had a wonderful time. For reference we were 9 adults, one child and a toddler (<2 yrs). Andrea was very helpful arranging our initial boat transportation to the house from Panajachel. The book on site also had a bunch of helpful information about things to do and how to get around.
We bought our own groceries for the majority of the trip (there are some nice grocery stores, a good bakery and tortillerias in Pana), and the kitchen at the house had everything we needed to prepare and make meals. We had Maria cook for us on two occasions—much pricier than cooking ourselves but delicious food!
The house is in a beautiful and peaceful location. We enjoyed little hikes around the area and had no trouble getting public boat taxis from the dock to take us to Pana and to other towns around the lake. A highlight was taking a moto taxi from San Marcos around the lake and visiting a women’s weaving cooperative in San Juan and doing some shopping/enjoying delicious coffee and baked goods in San Pedro.
This was my 3rd trip to the lake and definitely my favorite accommodations so far.
A few recommendations:
-Replace/repair some of the shakier wood chairs on the patio.
-Replace the toaster
-Add some baby gates (lots of stairs make the house a little scary with a toddler!)
So glad you enjoyed your stay at Pamakanya. It sounds like you had a great trip.
And thanks for the baby gate and chair repair suggestions! We will work on both right away.
4 weeks in paradise
Casa Pamakanya exceeded our expectations by far. We spent four perfect weeks there. Amazing architecture, so many beautiful spots outside to choose from to relax with stunning views on the lake, which is different every day and always beautiful. The house was extremely clean and the owners have really thought of every little detail to make the stay a great one. Communication was fast and always helpful and friendly.
What a treat to host Rose and her family for an entire month!! And how lucky they were to get to stay that long. Rose was wonderful to work with. Planning their stay and communicating with her was easy and always a pleasure. We always wish we could meet our guests and I feel that way about Rose in particular! We're so glad you enjoyed your stay.
My wife and I did an extra long vacation at this property. It was very nice and relaxing. It had the amenities we wanted. Maria did a great job cooking for us - I would recommend you use her as often as you can. There was always plenty of food left over. It was our first trip to Guatemala and we loved it.
THE BEST house on the Lake...likely in all of Guatemala!
Your stay at Pamakanya begins with speedy responses to ALL of your questions. The communication with the owners is excellent! The house itself is the best equipped place in Central America....and I have stayed at many.
Pamakanya will relax you, soothe your soul and make you fall in love with Lake Atitlan.
The location is ideal. A beautiful 15 minute walk along a well maintained hiking trail takes you to the delightful little town of Jaibalito. There you will find a wonderful market with yogurt, eggs, cheese, and a variety of fresh fruits and veggies. On Saturday mornings hike a little further to Santa Cruz for a wide variety of fruits, veggies, fish , seafood and baked goods. If you are tired or your bags are too heavy just take a boat home. It will take you right to your own private dock!
If you prefer, there is a new, very 'western', grocery store in Panajachel. It is a short walk from the boat dock and they have everything from steaks to socks!
I spent four weeks at Pamakanya last year. This year I spent 5 weeks...and I STILL want to go back. The villages around the lake offer endless adventures. The kayaks at the house enable you to explore the lake (in the morning when the water is calm) and the hiking trails offer endless opportunities to simply stop and observe the beauty around you.
Pamakanya is in a central location allowing for many day trips. Hike Indian Nose, visit Chichi market or simply find a new hiking trail.
The local people are amazing. The food is fabulous and the weather is idyllic. There is truly NOTHING negative....or even borderline...that I could say about Pamakanya.
However....you are not allowed to book until you check with me to be sure that you are not overlapping with my next trip!!!
I have travelled through many countries in Central America. Only once have I returned to a house....and I have NEVER returned to the same house three times. Pamakanya just may change that!!
THANK YOU to the owners for another amazing holiday!!
Pat, so glad you enjoyed your stay at Pamakanya! It is wonderful having you for the second time. Keep us posted for when you are ready for stay #3!

Beautiful, Peaceful, Fully Stocked, Everything That You Would Want!
Pamakanya is a special place in the world. It sit on one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, Lake Atitlan. The property if made up of three houses, each interesting and beautiful. The main house comes with a full kitchen, three fireplaces, and a beautiful view of the lake from the porch. You might never leave the porch's hammock. The lower casita is right at level and has a heated outdoor shower. The upper house is spacious with one of the best views of the lake. Pasquel, the property's caretaker is very helpful. And, you van hire the awesome Maria to cook for you. Spend some time at Pamakanya!
Family of 6 enjoyed immensely!
We stayed 4 nights at Pamakanya in August - and had such a wonderful time. The homes are all so quaint and full of character, the property is well maintained and so fun to explore, and the hosts are helpful, responsive and reliable. No doubt, you need to be ready for an encounter or 2 with some critters, but all part of the experience. We enjoyed the spectacular view from the covered patio, including a movie on that covered porch with the hammock in the photo. Also savored a few meals from Maria, which we highly recommend. The sun sets early and returning to the house at dusk with a meal (totally reasonably priced and quite tasty) all set is bliss. We hiked to the nearby town, and then on to Santa Cruz. Walking on the trails with a group, in daylight, felt totally safe. Bring good shoes. Exploring the towns around the lake, cliff-diving in San Marcos (or to a nearby bay with the kayaks), and swimming off the dock filled our days with adventure. We used the phone numbers and recommendations from the hosts for private boats and transport to and from the airport and Antigua. We recommend the extra money for the private boats at busy times and when the lake is rough. There is 2 houses in your little bay, one that had people staying but it didn't impact our privacy.
We were grateful for the detailed information provided by the hosts shortly before traveling - lots of great resources and advice that proved to be the best source of info during our 10 day stay in Guatemala.
Just go for it! Yes its rustic and out of the city but it really is not as big of a deal as it seems. Getting around is easy. Just bring your cash. The gardens are beautiful!!! The houses are fun, funky, architecturally interesting, very well maintained, well stocked, beautifully decorated, etc. etc. A really fun place to stay!
Volcano Climbing, Shopping (around the lake in Panajachel and Santiago Atitlan, and in the famous markets of Chichicastanengo, an hour away, and Antigua, two hours away), Nightlife, Visiting Mayan Villages, Massages and Yoga Workshops (in the New Age center of San Marcos, just along the lakeshore)
