Black Hills Great Central Location Away from the Crowds

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,500 sq ft
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 5 - 7 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, Sleeps 8

The Black Hills are often under estimated because of the word “hills”. This fact becomes apparent as you wind your way up hairpin turns high up on Edelweiss Mountain. The 1500 sq. ft. 3 bedroom mountain cabin is located at 5600 ft. above sea level in the heart of the Black Hills and surrounded by National Forest. Located within minutes of Pactola Lake, Sheridan Lake, and the Mickelson & Centennial Trails.

The perfect area for boating, hunting, fishing, hiking, rock climbing, golfing, skiing, snowmobiling, mountain biking, off-roading and sightseeing - Minutes from Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument and Custer State Park. This mountain retreat is truly in the heart of the Hills, hidden away from, but easily accessible to all Black Hills attractions.

Approximately 25 miles west of Rapid City, SD. (Airport 14 miles east of Rapid City)

Please note that there are no lake-front properties in the Black Hills. The picture provided shows Pactola Reservoir which is close by but not visible from the cabin.

About Dean and Patricia Farr

My wife and I both grew up in South Dakota near Sioux Falls. We attended college at Augustana College. I have a business degree and my wife an education degree. We spent time in Germany while I was in the Army. Following that time my wife taught school and I worked for General Mills in Minneapolis and then in West Chicago IL. We raised our two daughters in IL. We also started our own business there. We are now retired and recently moved to northern Wisconsin where we are full time caretakers for daughter's family lake home. We are again South Dakota residents and rent our Black Hills House while we are care-taking in Wisconsin. We feel fortunate to have 2 beautiful places to spend our retirement.

Dean and Patricia Farr purchased this cabin in 2000

Why Dean and Patricia Farr chose Mount Rushmore

This property was built by my uncle and his wife as a vacation home. Our family often visited and loved the Black Hills. We told Uncle Harvey that if and when he was ready to sell the property to keep us in mind. He did so and we are now the proud owners of his cabin in the Black Hills. Harvey and his wife Mildred are gone now but we keep a picture of him to remind us of the great experiences and scenery he provided our family.

What makes this cabin unique

We love the Black Hills. Our home gives us a peaceful get-a-way and is located centrally to all the attractions the Black Hills has to offer. We never run out of things to do or see. When we get tired from all the activity we come back and enjoy pleasant quite times resting and relaxing on the deck or next to the fireplace. Because we are built into the side of the mountain the tall pines that surround us makes one feel like they are living in tree house. We often see deer, wild turkeys, and numerous varieties of birds. We have seen cougars, bobcats, coyotes and mountain sheep nearby (not too close - just nearby). We love going to Custer State Park and driving the wildlife loop where you see buffalo, pronghorn, prairie dogs, deer, wild burros and more.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The home was beautiful.

It was a prefect getaway from the craziness of the bike rally. Really appreciated you letting the house to us. It really worked out well. It was great home away from home!

Wonderful rental

  • 4 of 5

The house was plenty of room for my family of six. My two grandchildren, ages 7 and 9, loved the area! The house was spacious enough for us, furnished with basics in the kitchen, plenty of towels, even shampoo left in shower. The only thing I can say negative is the internet went out and didn't reconnect so we were without connection the last day and a half of our stay. But we were busy sightseeing and enjoyed the Badlands, Custer State Park, where the kids loved the prairie dogs, buffalo and burros and more. We loved Mount Rushmore; the ice cream was delicious! Go at night, it was a great presentation and honor for the veterans. We liked Crazy Horse but you could almost see as much from the highway. We went to Roughlock Falls where the last scenes of "Dance with the Wolves" was filmed. We watched the movie at the cabin the night before. We really loved Iron Mountain Road to see abundant wildlife. Don't miss the view of Mount Rushmore at one of the tunnels and pull offs. We loved the Needles Highway too, esp. The Needles Eye! We saw goats at the Needles Eye tunnel. We visited the Gold outlet in Rapid City and there and in Wall, bought black hills gold jewelry. The air and space museum at the air force base is great too! The tour on base was ok but if you just see the museum it was better. The Founding Father museum was fantastic if you like history and we do. Bear Country USA is not something you want to miss. Lastly, the driveway to the house was not bad but if you are not used to steep gravel driveways, you might spin tires and not make it to the top. We didn't have any trouble with the driveway The owners were easy to contact and ask questions and were prompt in a reply I would definitely recommend this house to anyone who appreciates being out of the city to enjoy the land of South Dakota. It was an hour from the airport, 2 hrs from Badlands. The owner sends detail instructions about the house (turning on the water, use of house, things to see and do, etc) which I appreciated. We fixed breakfasts and one night grilled hotdogs using the grill in the garage. We were able to do laundry there too. It was a fabulous vacation! Be sure to go to Wall drugstore too! So much to see and do in the Black hills!

Great Cabin

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful cabin. They supply everything you need. Just bring clothing and food. The grand kids loved climbing in the front yard and going across the road to the creek and playing in the water till their feet were numb. We stopped at the Badlands on our way to the cabin because it is a good distance from the property but felt everything else was a reasonable drive from the cabin. Would recommend this property to others looking for a place to stay and explore the Black Hills. Thanks Dean and Patricia for sharing your cabin with us.

Nightly Destination

  • 5 of 5

Family loved coming back to the property each night after long days visiting attractions and sites.

The driveway was intriguing and was always a center of discussion as we approached, it actually became a game.

The house was well stocked and we felt right at home. Granddaughters had the basement to themselves.

Cannot think of any negative aspects.

Quiet, roomy, and comfy!

  • 4 of 5

This cabin is in a great location. Very quiet area and central to all the places we wanted to visit.

It had everything we needed to keep us comfortable and the kids (ages 10 and 8) entertained in our downtime. It is an older cabin and fairly well maintained. The cooking ware could use an update, but what was there was usable. All in all, we enjoyed our stay.
