Why Mark and Susan Brandon chose Hillcrest

San Diego is a favorite vacation spot and we are ideally located in an urban neighborhood that is walking distance to many fine restaurants. We are also close to Balboa Park, one of the nation's largest intra-city parks (larger than Central Park in New York). The Park itself is quite an attraction, but it also contains the world-famous San Diego Zoo. Other destinations are within 5 to 15 minutes away. To the West are the Bay and airport (3 miles) and the beaches (7 miles), to the South are Petco Park and the Gaslamp Quarter (4 miles), the Convention Center (3 miles), and Downtown (1-2 miles), and to the North are La Jolla (12 miles), the Del Mar Fair and Racetrack (seasonal)(20 miles). Legoland is North of the City, about 30 minutes away. Temecula wineries and the Safari Park are farther North, about 45 minutes away. In the South Bay, there is Aquatica Waterpark (formerly Soak City) about 25 minutes away. There are thousands of hotel rooms available, but there is only one Hardesty House, accessible to everything. When you stay here, it will be your home away from home. Enjoy true relaxation at home. You are free to set your own schedule, no common areas or parking attendants, park your car and go out whenever you wish.

What makes this house unique

Relax and enjoy gracious living in a one-of-a-kind house. If any special arrangements are desired, just let us know and we will be glad to help. With our optional B & B service, you will enjoy delicious breakfasts and other food items. We want to make your stay memorable and one you will want to repeat. We are here to help. Our group of friends loved the property, finding it perfect for our annual reunion.

Our hosts provided a warm welcome with consistent and clear communication before our arrivals, and even stocking foodstuffs for our Christmas Day when we knew we wouldn’t get around to grocery shopping. It felt like going to a relative’s house when we found a freshly baked cake!

Bedrooms are spacious and comfortable, with excellent bedding and linens. The bathrooms and kitchen are nicely updated. At first glance, the kitchen seemed a bit small, but it was common for the age of the house and simply smaller than the enormous ones built today. We didn’t cook any large meals, and all the appliances were more than enough for our breakfasts and dinners in. The dining room and living room were perfect for lounging and chatting, catching up on each others’ lives. The house, front yard and back patio are all very well maintained.

Parking was ample in the driveways and on the street. The location is perfect for walking to Balboa Park and lots of neighborhood restaurants and shopping.

gorgeous rental in prime location

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely everything about our experience in this rental was perfect! Susan was wonderful to deal with and the homemade coffee cake was a lovely touch. The house was immaculate. The rooms were large, the beds were comfortable, and it was all beautifully decorated. The kitchen is on the small side but we weren't doing a lot of cooking so it was fine for our needs. The location is fantastic. Lots of restaurants and stores were within walking distance and it was just a quick drive to all the Balboa Park attractions. We were absolutely thrilled with our experience with this rental!

Lovely home in the heart of a thriving community

  • 5 of 5

The owners communicated well through out the entire experience and made us feel welcome immediately upon arrival. The house was absolutely immaculate and comfortable and offered plenty of room for our 4 couples. The home has a large front seating area and a large dining room that accommodated everyone and a quiet shaded deck area in back. The only low to the home is the small kitchen but it had all the amenities to entertain our large group for the week, but it would be difficult to prepare complete meals. But with all of the great restaurants that are within walking distance, we did not feel that it we were inconvenienced at all. I would stay here again if I return to San Diego in the future.

Beautiful home, great location, owner great to work with

  • 5 of 5

We rented this 100 year old historic property in Hillcrest for 5 nights as our daughter was getting married in Downtown San Diego. Beautiful location for pre wedding photos. Convenient location to downtown. The owner Susan was wonderful to work with. She even asked the colors of the wedding and had fresh flowers to welcome us. Highly recommend.

A beautiful home in a great location

  • 4 of 5

We were a group of 13 in San Diego for a family reunion - 7 of us had a lovely stay in this home. The house was just as pictured, immaculately kept, spacious and comfortable. The bedrooms were huge, the beds were comfy and the bathrooms were beautiful. The small courtyard in the back felt very private and accommodated the entire party of 13 for dinners outside. It was quite warm while we were there but we only needed to turn on the air conditioning one day as the house stayed quite cool generally. The location is great - you're within walking distance of groceries, restaurants, and Balboa Park - very convenient to the airport as well.

Mark and Susan are exceptional hosts - welcoming and available for quick questions anytime. We certainly enjoyed the coffee cake that awaited us on arrival!! Our damage deposit was promptly returned.

The only reason I am not giving a perfect five stars is the kitchen. I grew up in a Victorian home with a galley kitchen like this one, and I don't miss it! Our party preferred to eat at home so we could visit more easily, and this was quite challenging with the small kitchen. The small dishwasher really required you to rinse well before washing, and it just couldn't handle much of a load. On the other hand, for a tiny kitchen, it was well equipped. For parties who mostly eat out for dinners, this kitchen would be more than adequate.

If I could give it a 4.8, I would!! Thanks, Mark and Susan, for a lovely stay.

Victorian charm and hospitality to match

  • 5 of 5

We really can't say enough good things about both the property and the owner. Susan was fantastic about communication and amazingly easy to work with. Not only did she take delivery of a rental crib for our 2 year old the morning before we arrived, but she brought us a few baby blankets on check in just in case we were lacking. She also had some great suggestions for family dinners and tourism options. Oh...and the coffee cake she left for us was AWESOME!

As for the house, it's a beautifully restored piece of history. VERY comfortable beds and a very useful floorplan for our family group (1 toddler, 2 parents and 2 grandparents). The "back" bedroom upstairs was very quiet for our little guy and the grandparents loved the privacy of the en suite bedroom/bathroom on the main floor. The neighborhood is very central for the Zoo, Balboa, La Jolla, Coronado, SeaWorld...pretty much everything. We never drove more than 20 minutes to get to something we wanted to do. We also took advantage of the many great restaurants that were walking distance.

The other reviews are correct that the kitchen is on the small side, but it in no way hampered our enjoyment. There was a full sized fridge and plenty of space for me to cook the few meals that we did in the house.

Overall, it was a great experience and we would gladly work with Susan again.
