About Nancy Ekelund
I was born and raised in Redding and my grandparents owned a cabin in nearby Shingletown. My summers as a child were joyfully spent there, and the sounds, smells, and sights associated with the mountains, creeks, and forest are in my blood. After college and my first years working as an optometrist in southern CA, I moved back home to Redding in 1992 where I have a private practice. At the end of 2014, I bought this wonderful cabin which fulfills a long-held dream to be back in the mountains. I then spent several months to rejuvenate it into the type of place I believe anyone could enjoy. I feel blessed to own it and if you should decide to share in my little "get away from it all" cabin, I hope you have an amazing stay. With gratitude, Nancy

Why Nancy Ekelund chose Shingletown
What I especially love about this property is that while some cabins nestled in large pines can get dark and even dreary inside, this home with its 3 large skylights and lighter walls stays "open" and uplifting. All rooms have ceiling fans and plenty of windows as well. The cute creek in the back, the private lake across the way, and the nice meadow/open field adjacent to the lake all make for added fun. Bring a bat and ball or a badminton/volleyball set and burn some great outdoor energy!

This is a great place to stay.
This is such a lovely cabin. It is so homey and welcoming. She has thought of everything down to the smallest detail. We would happily recommend this to anyone.
Very nice place!!
Cozy, Comfortable and Convenient!
This cozy mountain cabin offered a very comfortable home-base for our adventures in Lassen, Burney Falls and Hat Creek. We are 2 couples with 2 dogs, and the separation of space in the bedroom areas created a nice privacy yet the kitchen/dining/living rooms provided a wonderful gathering space. Beds are comfortable and the shower made it difficult to exit! Outside, we enjoyed the fire pit in the cool mornings while having coffee and again in the evening after dinner while listening to the quiet and gazing at the stars. Plus, the trails across the street at the Camp were an easy place to walk our dogs. Lassen is underrated - we can't say how much we enjoyed the peace and quiet of the park and surrounding area including of course, the cabin! Thanks, Nancy, for all your wonderful touches including a generous welcoming basket filled with all kinds of treats! We hope to return again soon :)
Beautiful cabin in the woods
This home is beautifully kept, nicely decorated. Everything we needed was there including coffee, snacks, and a bottle of wine. The location is perfect for hiking and climbing in Lassen Volcanic National Park. This is the best VRBO I have stayed in.
Amazing and wonderful stay in cabin near Mount Lassen!!! Sister cabin at #1002921
My husband and I were looking for a place to just get away for a few days where we could just relax, chill out, smell mountain air, and have our dogs. Nancy's cabin was that and so much more!! It was just the 2 of us but the cabin was very spacious and we only went to the second floor a couple of times to enjoy the view of the pines. We have done VRBOs several times and Nancy's place was actually better than it seemed online. The neighbor house was farther up the road and except for a few occasions, we didn't see anyone else. It was a perfect mountain paradise all to ourselves. One of the concerns I have about VRBO's is that it feels like you are infringing on someone's house because there can be personal effects throughout the house and in the closets, etc. However, this cabin was designed for vacation use so it was very meticulously maintained and obviously catered to the guest. She thought of every detail, from plenty of linens and towels, to pet bowls, and extra comfy furniture. The property was also set back from the road so we never heard traffic and nestled in the pines, there was nothing better than having my morning coffee on the deck. When we traveled the short distance to Mount Lassen, the park was very quiet and not busy at all with vacation traffic or visitors. We went fishing at a couple of locations and were the only ones there!! This place was awesome because it was only a few miles to the nearest town for supplies including the Catholic Church. All the people in town were very friendly and were happy to answer any questions. We would definitely stay at this cabin again and would absolutely encourage anyone wanting to get away to the mountains who wanted that camping feeling with a high class cabin to stay here!!! Nancy was great to work with and quickly responded to text messages and emails. We haven't met her, but she exuded that nice, friendly atmosphere that she truly cared if we were comfortable and if there was anything she could do to make our stay better. We were barely home a few hours and already refunded our security deposit. Sincerely appreciated dealing with her. Thank you Nancy!!:)
This cabin continues to be a quality location with all the comforts.
Our stay was in the midst of the Carr Fire and we have little to complain about compared to the folks in Redding. We stayed inside most of the time. Only ventured out in the air conditioned car. Smoke was mostly from the Mendocino fire. Continues to be a cozy retreat. Our second stay in this Viola cabin.
Located in the small town of Viola at 4300 ft. elevation, this charming cabin is just minutes from beautiful Lassen Volcanic National Park. The Park is a remarkable place to visit with its relatively easy hike to the summit, or a visit to the hot springs, the visitor center, lakes, museum, and its many other attractions.
Just across from the cabin is Bailey Creek with its stock of trout, and Hat Creek, loaded with native trout, is just 20 minutes away. Lake McCumber, Manzanita Lake, and Grace and Nora Lakes are close by as well.
We have wineries within 20 minutes, Burney Falls about an hour away, and the Sundial Bridge with Turtle Bay Exploration Park in the town of Redding just 45 minutes from the cabin. Turtle Bay is well worth a day trip - especially if children are visiting.
Winter months in the mountains can be majestic - and as cozy and curled up or as adventurous as one desires. Not only is there sledding, cross country, and snowshoeing in our area, but Mount Shasta is available for downhill/boarding roughly an hour and a half away.
